I noticed that when you reviewed the "Let It Be" album you had a very positive reaction to Phil Spector's work on that record. Consider delving into his catalog; in spite of his many and varied peccadilloes and more serious transgressions he was quite the producer/songwriter and considered a 1960s wunderkind. He produced a Christmas record that is considered and absolute classic and his hand is all over George Harrison's masterpiece "All Things Must Pass".

There aren't many Nirvana albums so I think you should stick with them and do Nevermind next. Nevermind was a slick production for a major record label, it produced multiple hits and it was an era defining release. It is a lot more accessible than Bleach and you can see from the front cover image how the band had concerns that they may have been 'selling out' with it but they instead emerged with their integrity intact.

"About a Girl" is as good as anything on "Nevermind", though - and a lot of the songs for "Nevermind" were being written at the time, but just not used as Cobain thought they were too poppy. In other words, he was already writing that stuff when "Bleach" was being made, really. "In Utero" is the perfect Nirvana album to me, as they finally matched both styles masterfully.

@@terryfeeds I would heavily disagree with that one. While the Black Album certainly got more popular, ...AJFA was certainly more musically realised and matured. Then again, OP might have been referring to popularity but still, AJFA was still very popular, being the first Metal album nominated for a Metal category at the Grammy's (then losing to Jethro Fucking Tull) and it carried their first music video for One which got insane attention when released.

Bleach is Nirvana's "grunge/metal" album; their heaviest, imo. Grunge was originally supposed to mean an amalgamation of punk rock and hard rock/heavy metal. It became a blanket term for any rock music that came out of Seattle, or anything that resembled it but maybe wasn't necessarily Seattle-based. Good record and a very strong debut. Nirvana's punk influences are most apparent in Bleach and Incesticide, but you can hear both evolution and common themes on all of their tracks. On the drums - Chad Channing was and is an excellent drummer, but Dave Grohl was a huge part in evolving Nirvana into one of the most iconic bands ever. His impact can't be underestimated.

True, but as phenomenal as he was, Chad wasn't the only drummer on Bleach (although he wrote a good load of the drum parts that Grohl ended up playing during the Nevermind sessions, namely on In Bloom, Lithium and Polly among others). Dale Crover of The Melvins, who was their first choice drummer at the time, played drums on "Floyd the Barber", "Paper Cuts" and "Downer"

So now I can respond, as a Seattle native who was there and playing in bands you’ve never heard of (deservedly so)😅: This is a perfect sample of what was going on in Seattle in ‘89-91 - tons of bands recording their own demos and albums on under-$1000 budgets in cheap studios and doing whatever it took to be heard, not for a minute expecting the world to notice. Back then their label Sub Pop was a homegrown hype machine putting out as much music as they could on zero money. Nirvana themselves were sort of the junior division while bands like Mudhoney and Soundgarden were the best-known outside of the city. When this came out, it didn’t blow everybody away right off, but it did turn some heads as there were hints that Kurt had a lot going on in the songwriting dep’t. It sold well for an indie release. When DGC signed them, I remember folks thinking “Cool…” but not really expecting too much. Even when “Teen Spirit” hit the radio, I remember thinking, that one SHOULD be a hit, probably not tho… little did we know!😂 Also, it’s true that the record cost just over $600 borrowed from guitarist Jason Everman, who joined right after the sessions on 2nd guitar. Apparently they never paid him back. Jason did one tour before they fired him, he then joined Soundgarden on bass, who also fired him after one tour.😭

Bleach is Nirvana’s debut album. Definitely put it on your list to react to the rest of their albums. Nevermind is what changed the landscape of the musical world and is their second studio album. You’ll really see how they progressed, adding Dave Grohl on drums was huge, and how much tighter and evolved Kurt Cobain’s songwriting became. That album’s use of dynamics is really good, owing to their influence from the Pixies. Cobain was also heavily influenced by The Beatles and punk rock. In Utero was their last studio album and done sort of as the anti-Nevermind in that they wanted a particular sound (cue Steve Albini to produce it) that wasn’t so commercially slick.

Nirvana were so refreshing when they came out. They really breathed new life into rock music. Such a short-lived yet influential band. That was fun. This album was more one-dimensional, chugga-chugga, riffy, etc than what was about to happen next. What happened next was like, if you're familiar with the scene in the Wizard of Oz when everything changes from black and white to colour. It was that much of a development, that much of a transition, and it really stamped a massive change on music at the time, that absolutely nobody saw coming. Put it this way - I was in a pub for lunch today and they were playing Pixies on the stereo. Before Nirvana that would have never happened. Nirvana made that happen, they kicked down the doors. Love Buzz is a bonus track not on the original vinyl album, which is why it sounds a bit out of place. About a Girl was on the original, and was the first hint that Nirvana had a little more going on than just being grungy rockers. The next one is going to be even more fun, and I guarantee that you do know a good few of the songs; they're burned into cultural consciousness. There will be more screaming as well.

Wow, this is great! As you've found, Bleach is quite a rough entry point into the band and for most fans this was a release they only came to later as they were digging into the band's history. Nevermind (which contains their superhit Smells Like Teen Spirit) is probably what most people heard first and it's a much more polished album than Bleach is.

As a whole album i listened to bleach before nevermind or in utero. I didnt like how nevermind was hyper polished and in utero to me felt like them trying to get to the bleach era kind of energy and production but it felt forced in my mind, but obviously the songwriting in in utero is miles ahead. Also i been listening to early R.E.M and i can actually hear kurts inspiration from michael stipes vocal style specifically during murmur and reckoning which i thought was super interesting

The next day I bought the cassette.

It's so interesting to see someone to react to music that you were there for and at this point take for granted. I live in Seattle and was at many of their first shows before this record came out. I think the best way to look at this record is as a demo for Kurts pop sensibilities while trying to maintain the heavier elements of the bands he was hanging around with and listening to-especially the Melvins.

This made my morning. You went from reacting to my favorite band (The Beatles) to my favorite band as a teenager (Nirvana). Glad you liked it. Bleach can be kind of a rough listen for first-timers. It's got more of The Melvins' influence (kinda harsh and angular sounding) on it than their later studio albums. You were spot on in singling out the rhythm section, as that's probably Nirvana's secret weapon. Keeping the bass and drums tight while Kurt goes off screaming, wailing feedback on his guitar, is what hooks the listener and gives the sound its broad appeal. Embracing that catchiness and fusing it with their avante-garde punk/metal roots is what set this band above most of their peers. Kurt had a great ear for melody. Would love to see you analyze the rest of their tragically short discography. I'd also love to see you branch off and sample some of their peers and influences. The Melvins might be a bit of a hard sell, but you might dig Sonic Youth (Kurt's favorite band) if the idea of unfamiliar tunings and sheets of glorious impenetrable feedback don't put you off. Maybe try "Daydream Nation" or "Sister" first.

Actually this album sounds so raw and beautiful at the same time because it was their first official LP, recorded only for 600$ (yes, i repeat 600)) It wasn't a major label release - Nirvana had a very limited time in studio, so they basically recorded everything with one take. You'll be surprised how much will change in their second LP Nevermind which will become one of the greatest records of all times

A lot of people don't even know about this album. Kurt commented on that in a live performance, right before he performed About A Girl. "This is off of our first record. Also noteworthy is their Unplugged album, recorded live.

This Is the first album so it's a good start if you wanna go for the whole ride. I don't know if you had heard "Nevermind" but it's the second and the most famous and if you're interested go for "Incesticide" (b sides and rarities) and the last album "In Utero" (had that kinda raw energy of Bleach in my opinion) and maybe the Unplugged who has reversions and a lot of covers and that's it. And i think that Nirvana had that kinda raw energy and music that everybody can feel identified (oh and if you like grunge please listen another bands who has really good albums and tried another rythms beside grunge like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots) I love your energy and your reactions!

Bleach is Nirvana's first album and sounds quite raw production wise. Like most people, I only heard this when I went back after being grabbed by Nevermind, their second album and massive commercial breakthrough. Bleach is the only Nirvana album to featue Chad Channing on drums and Jason Everman. The rumuor was that Everman isn't actually playing on any of it, he just got a credit for putting up the money to have it recorded. From the next ablum it's the classic line up of Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl. I still like this album a lot although it could do with a little more variety. Like you point out, most of the variation comes in the vocals. If you carry on down the Nirvana route, I think you'll enjoy it. Sadly, it isn't a long journey.

I haven't watched this video yet (still too early in the morning and the coffee hasn't quite kicked in yet and we are talking about early Nirvana here) but I like it already, from the thumbnail and skimming it quickly with the sound off. Your enthusiasm is infectious and a major part of why your channel is so great. I did quickly google About a Girl and supposedly Kurt Cobain wrote it after hours of listening to Meet the Beatles (he was a huge Beatles fan), so I'm looking forward to hearing it and your reaction to it. Until recently I didn't know about Nirvana's Beatles influence (obviously Dave Grohl is a huge Beatles fan). Apparently Cobain was nervous about including it in this album because it wasn't grungy and he was afraid that he'd upset his fans because he thought it sounded too much like REM, a very popular band at the time but not at all grungy. Looks like he had nothing to worry about.
