What a wonderful kit. The materials, instructions and plans are just sublime. Having checked the Vanguard website I was pleased to see subjects other than warships. I am now saving my pennies for a kit.

A good thorough review, thank you Jason. Vanguard models look like they really have thought about their products and yoh can see the work they put into their instructions, so much better than the Mantua tripe I am wading through.!

Hi Jason, Looks like a very nice kit and as you say the introduction of resin / 3D takes it to another level (might not be everyone’s cup of tea but for accuracy I’d think a good move). The quality of the items and wood stock especially all look really very good, with the instruction manual next level Just embarked on the Amati 1:48 Bounty that I’d had in the stash for quite a number of years and your observation with the elastic bands is so true. Detailed review as ever and one for future consideration assuming that is that I get to finish the Bounty and the other plastic projects currently on the go….😂😂

Chris's work is absolutely the best in the biz. He also did the Caldercraft victory model. And the much awaited 1:64 victory kit for Amati

Hi Jason, This looks like a great kit. I like those 3D printed parts. I wouldn't touch this one with out at least a couple of wooden ship models under my belt. It will look really nice when you get a chance to build it. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. Jeff

Hi Jason Thanks for a great in depth review of this Vanguard models kit. While most of it is very well done( the kit not your review) there are a few pieces I'm not happy with, for the cost of the kit. 1. Is the laser engraved decking which while very well done I just prefer to do the decking as normal, this feels like taking part of the essential build away from the modeller. 2. There are for me too many plastic parts(3d printed resin) some of which like Anchors and guns should be done in metal imho as well as the stand which should be in wood( plastic stand for a wooden ship???) I think again this is a cheaper option to maximise profit just of course imho. Other than that yes it looks very impressive I think all the lasering that's going on within the kit harks back to the old mantua kits and the like which had printed decks etc, obviously this is more modern approach to that, all this is just my personal view on this kit like the review is yours so no offence is meant.

all good points, I do think the resin parts are crisper than metal castings, like you say we all will have different views. thanks for the comment.

Hi Jason, the original Speedy (and Alert) kit did have metal castings. However, the quality of the castings was so poor I decided to take the loss, throw them out, and then have them first resin cast (much more expensive than cast metal, by the way), followed by what I do now, which is 3-d print the parts. This means there are no moulding lines on any part, and each part comes out exactly as per the original file drawing, not squashed, shrunk or distorted. (cannons were oval in white metal,). Regarding the deck, you really do not have to use it, and can plank it yourself if you wish, using the engraved deck (or the 1:1 drawing on the parts plan) as a template. The beauty of a wooden model is that you are not constrained in what you want to do. You can still plank the whole hull if that is what you like doing. I can state that my kits are not built to a price, but designed and developed, and then priced up, and because of the materials used (pear is expensive), profit margins are a lot less than other manufacturers. I know this because I have developed kits for two other model kit manufacturers in the past, going back from 1994 to 2017, when I set up Vanguard Models, with an aim to produce kits that I would have liked to have built, but with a lot less constraints.

I’ve built five wooden kits: Billing’s Boats Cutty Sark, Artesania Latina Swift, Aeropiccola HMS Prince, Panart Royal Yacht Caroline and Caldercraft HM Brig Supply. Corel HMS victory is in the stash…This kit looks incredible. The quality of materials and precision cutting trumps all other brands I’ve had experience with. Now…..Where’s my bloody wallet?
