    It looks like a module made just for you, Sidekick. Coincidentally, I happen to be reading a book about a USAF OV-10 pilot's experience working the Ho Chi Minh trail during the Vietnam war. This is almost the perfect plane for that job. I say almost because it lacked one really crucial thing for someone who is going to spend large amounts of time in the air over South East Asia: air conditioning. According to the author of the book I'm reading ("Da Nang Diary" by Tom Yarborough) it was common for Bronco pilots to lose three pounds during a mission. Exciting times!

    I am reading the same book. Brutal. Trying to figure out how to recreate those missions in DCS. Oh look! We'll need F-100s (coming) F-4s (coming) AND A-1s ( yes! Coming). Now all we need us a flyable AH-1 and... wait... oh yeah, a map of Viet-frigging-nam.

    Another book starring the Bronco I can highly recommend: "A lonely kind of war" by Marshall Harrison. As I have read the "Da Nang Diary" as well, I must say that those two books put the Bronco on the list of my many favourite combat aircraft. Oh, and the pilots who flew them in 'Nam where absolutely nuts!

    I don't know if DCS includes this already but to have comms with the grunts your running CAS for would be awesome. In something like ARMA that would be the best part of it for me, working in sync with the guys on the ground providing recon and CAS as requested. It would also be very cool to coordinate with the fast movers marking targets and maybe providing some BDA/FAC work after they do their part. Great review and flying Sidekick.

  • @frogisis

    @frogisis

    Yeah that'd be awesome. AFAIK Combined Arms lets you do that in multiplayer, but the mission designer has to explicitly create the JTAC and/or commander roles for that side when programming their big CAS adventure. I'd love to have an update to the way ground forces operate that allows you to have dynamically generated JTAC interactions in singer player or all-air multiplayer as well (plus we've just long needed an overhaul of the ground force mechanics in general-I can't wait til infantry is more than just decoration to make it look like there are people in your mission).

    Great little review of a great, little module! :) My feelings about the FM are very much in line with yours. It's a fantastic start - I hope they will put in the effort to really flesh it out. It's got a ton of potential. Thanks for the intro on how to employ ordinance on this thing with precision! My mate and I were dropping from 20-30 deg dives and were finding it hard to hit anything. We'll try again with your method! Cheers :)

    I'm curious to see how the real deal pilots did it in the day with this plane. Of course this module may not be accurately modeled in this regard but maybe that's what they had to do in the real plane, steep dives.

    It's also worth pointing out that aircraft like the Bronco are far simpler than other aircraft in DCS, which makes development easier. The mod is fantastically done, don't get me wrong, but I think the devs should refine the mod to full fidelity, and release as a paid module as part of the new Vietnam lineup.

    I'm curious if there is, or will be, an O-1 or O-2 in DCS. You could say the O-2 was sort of the sister to the OV-10 with it's similar design. There certainly appears to be a great deal of interest and work going into Vietnam era aircraft in DCS. I have yet to hear of an actual map of it though. Of course there is a variety of terrain to model and they could opt to just focus on either mountainous or the flat coastal areas. These planes saw use in both environments. BTW, the Bronco was also used quite a bit by the Navy to support SEAL teams, mostly in the delta. I wasn't aware the USAF used it though. I thought they just had the O-1 and O-2's for this role.

  • @Sidekick65

    @Sidekick65

    Жыл бұрын

    I have it two ways on two different rigs. On one it is bound to the rear boat switch position on a TM throttle. Whenever the boat switch is back, it's in reverse. On my other rig I have a winwing throttle. It treats the rear detente positions of the throttles as a button. I use the left throttle as the RPM control and when I pull it fully to the rear its in reverse.

    @@Sidekick65 I took the same approach with my TM throttle. Everything indicates the props are in reverse but I’m not getting any braking power out of them.

    As a former OV-10 crew chief, I have some problems with this video. First off, the Bronco does in-fact have nose wheel steering, there is a button for on-demand hyd steering controlled by the rudder pedals. Secondly you can't turn the generator on because as soon as the power to the starter circuit stops, the engine spins up while the starter is still connected which forces the starter to become the generator. It's automatic. One unit,conspicuously called a "Starter/Generator" Third, the propellers can't go into forward until the T-76's are revved up and the props put into reverse to release the pitch locks. Fourth I'm skeptical about the prop condition lever having anything to do with fuel flow. TBH I can't recall... (it's been 45 years) If there are any 431X1F or 432's or prop guys out there please chime in.
