Kinda sad how everyone says kiwis are so nice. Im from new zealand and to me its just normal. Makes me wonder what people from other countries are like. Surely we arent that much nicer? Im sure there are nice people everywhere. Maybe its just a subjective observation. I say this out of curiosity and of concern

Hi! I’m from the U.S., Indiana to be specific, and have travelled a fair bit but live in NZ now, what I think the difference is is that Kiwis don’t know a stranger. You’ll start up a conversation with almost anyone, which is really pleasant and honestly quite rare around the world. I find the Dutch to be incredibly nice but they’re a tough shell to crack, once you get them talking though their lovely. So I think more than anything it’s that a lot of kiwis are curious and extroverted so that comes off as being friendly to others.

I'm SO glad you guys mentioned the hole in the Ozone Layer and the need for sunscreen to avoid the very real 10 minute burn times; I see so many Americans walking around all bright pink because they didn't know or didn't take it seriously. Our country's small size means we all feel very close to each other, and we're raised to be very helpful and polite to other people, so even people like myself who prefer to avoid conversation with strangers will talk to or help out anyone that asks or looks like they need a hand. The shoes thing is because footwear never really caught on in Maori culture, aggravated by them often not being able to afford any, so not wearing shoes has become normalised in NZ culture as a whole and is practised across all walks of life. It also lends into our very 'chill' attitude about things; in both NZ and AU, "she'll be 'right" is a common response when someone highlights an unexpected problem or complication.

You have to try the Blue Cod and chips ,Fish n Chips are our thing, and it's a little expensive, but have a look at Puhoi Belgian Chocolate Milk,it's amazing,so is their White Caramel milk. Blaming the hole in the Ozone layer for elevated UV in Australia and NZ is a myth. The ozone depletion ebbs and flows with the seasons and is over Antarctica. Occasionally high altitude air with lower ozone levels will drift over Australia and New Zealand and other countries at the same latitudes, but the effect in quite tiny. The main reason Australia and New Zealand have high sunburn and skin cancer rates is because they are very sunny countries that have been largely populated by fair skinned people with low resistance to the effects of UV. A place like Sydney is at about the same latitude at North Africa in the other hemisphere; it's not an environment favourable to unadapted fair skinned people. Even Tasmania, which at the southern end of Oz, is at about the same latitude as Spain, which most people would think of as 'sunny'. Sadly lots of well intentioned but scientifically misinformed people continue to spread the 'ozone hole over Oz and NZ' story; probably because it sounds so dramatic. PS: I was involved in implementing the Montreal Protocol and similar in Australia to remove/reduce ozone depleting substances that were causing the real upper atmosphere ozone depletion. Upper atmospheric ozone levels are improving as a result and will probably be back to their former 'normal' levels by about 2050. But even then, if you are not privileged to have the better UV protection of dark skin, it's "slip, slop, slap" all the same. Want references? Start with something that's an easy read like at: theconversation.com/why-does-australia-have-so-much-skin-cancer-hint-its-not-because-of-an-ozone-hole-91850. , and go from there.

@@tacitdionysus3220 Yes, people are often surprised that Auckland is as near to the equator as Tunis. They erroneously think that as down under is called the antipodes, that London is exactly opposite. New Zealand is called a temperate country because of the cool airflow, but if you can get burnt in the Mediterranean, you can certainly get burnt in NZ, even more so because you rarely feel that hot.

@Michael Heliotis you're a tad wrong there mate! it's not because us Maori were 'aggravated about not affording shoes' that's the weirdest kind of racist reasoning I've heard HAHAHAH! Learn a bit more about the culture and you'll learn that its tapu to wear shoes at areas of the marae which may have created habits, not only that but as i'm sure you'll know its also a common kiwi thing to do - Maori still own shoes... yet lots of kiwis go barefoot.. Pakeha or not?! Chur. Happy Easter.

The "foreigners have to show passports to buy liquor" thing is not true. For starters how would they know who is a foreigner. You were asked for ID because you look under 25 and so needed to show ID to prove you're over 18. That doesn't have to be a passport but nobody here knows what a valid Texas or Maine driver's licence should look like so a passport is the most reliable ID if you have it. And try the real fruit icecreams from a roadside shop somewhere near Motueka.

We had several of the same experiences last month. The turn signal thing was funny over and over again. A big difference in eateries was, don't bother to ask to separate a check when ordering and you pay at a register where they will take care of that. I liked the water bottles at the table. Coffee definitely different, I'm sure they feel the same way visiting the US. The country is so beautiful, not to bristle any feathers, but the South Island had the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. People were extremely nice. Fine wines without a cork was new but well explained in our numerous visits to wineries. Whatever you do, don't take a tour, rent cars and houses and travel with a couple or two. Don't get worried about prices, remember, if you are from the US, your end cost is 30% less and already include taxes and restaurants already include tips.

WE're from the UK and the windscreen wipers/indicators (or blinkers) were different on pretty much every car we test drove before buying our there - plus our first introduction into the older American style clutch system too :D

That's true, every car I've owned has had windscreen wiper, indicator and headlight switches in different positions. I'd say the differences are more to do with the manufacturers than which part of the world you get the car.

You dont need a passport to buy alcohol if you look old enough.

I have never heard of the passport check . My mother buys her wine no probs when she is over from UK.. i think maybe they thought you were younger.. haha

@@michellehanley4651 it's the under 25 thing. If they look around the legal age they and their friends will be checked and if their friends are underage they will not be allowed to buy the alcohol as it is deemed that they will be supplying a minor. Your mum will probably look old enough to be over 25 and can buy without the check.

I sat my driver licence test barefoot LOL I had a very sensitive stick shift (manual) car and I stalled it less often if I didn't have shoes on. I still stalled it 4 times during the test but managed to scrape a pass!
