@cleopatra VII According to human rights it's actually about people. And it's true that in the conflict affected area the majority of people are ethnically Armenians. It's really sad and excruciating how laws are creating borders where there are people lives and realities involved. This is a conflict that didn't start with any of the people who are writing now here, and at the same time people take it as their personal battle. “All violence is the result of people tricking themselves into believing that their pain derives from other people and that consequently those people deserve to be punished.” ― from Marshall Rosenberg author of Nonviolent communication

It's amazing how this guy knows absolutely nothing of the history of the region and doesn't appear to have read anything before getting there. The guide in the backseat could have made up anything she wanted about the history of the area and he would have been like "oh really?, that's so cool!"

Congrats! Now you're persona non grata in Azerbaijan. Welcome to the club!! But on another note the first time I was in Artsakh (2014), I ended up chilling in the hostel main room eating dinner and watching some Cold War spy movie in Russian when I just struck up some conversation with 2 random locals sitting at the next table. Next thing you know it's 3 am; with my driver, the 2 guys (Hovo and Stepan yes I remember them lmao), the hostel owner and we are 3 bottles of vodka deep just eating and talking about our individual lives which drastically differ (I'm from America). Now I don't remember much from that night but it was such a beautiful moment that a simple question about what the movie was about ended up being a 8 hour sit down with copious amounts of food, liquor and tremendous company. Just one of the many reasons I love my country!! 🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲

Klivekina - Oganyan it was 1983 i was 5 years old and i went with my family to Ijevan, Armenia. It was during Soviet Union and there was no conflict yet between Armenians and Azerbaijanis. I entered to a local shop and asked to get a bread and handed over the money. I spoke to her in Russian. This lady probably around mid 20s asked me this question: Hayes or Turkes? Initially i did not understand what she said.l and she did not sell the bread to me. I went out and asked my uncle who was in the car waiting for me. Told him that the lady says hayes or turkes. As my uncle spoke Armenian he said do not worry we can buy a bread somewhere else. In the meantime, in 1983 my Armenian neighbours (Artur, Sarkis,,Robert etc) were enjoying their live and no one was asking Hayes or Azeris/Turkes to them....

Klivekina - Oganyan then this discrimination is only against Azerbaijanis and Turks by Armenians. Those Armenians that live outside Armenia are kind and friendlier because they are not locals in those places that they live and they try to be nicer and kinder. This is a proven behaviour of any nation that live away from their own country. I can also confirm this where Armenians in Baku, Kirovabad (Ganja) were much nicer than in Armenia back in early 1980s. At least this is what I remember.

Whenever you would like to visit Artsakh, go to Yerevan, get a permit from the MFA and then make your way south towards Berdzor which will take you to Stepanakert, and from there you could go wherever you’d like with the exception of Shushi and Hadrut as they are currently under occupation.

Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict One of Azerbaijan`s ancient settlement and culture centers, Nagorno-Karabakh is part of Karabakh region. In 1923, the Soviet government established the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast (NKAO), covering a total area of 4,400 км², in the mountainous part of Karabakh. This laid the foundation of separatist trends in that region. But in fact the root cause of the problem goes back to the 18th century when the Armenians, who were resettled in Azerbaijan, laid claims to Azerbaijani lands. The Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict started with the Armenians` open territorial claims to Azerbaijan`s historical lands and ethnic provocations in 1988. In the early 1980s, the Armenians in the Soviet Union leadership, leaders of Armenian SSR and the Armenian diaspora abroad exploited the weakening of the central government of the USSR to embark on a campaign to annex the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast to Armenia.

Nagorno-Karabakh lies in the centre of the western regions of the Azerbaijan Republic, part of Karabakh as a whole. The Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region was established on the territory of the Azerbaijan Republic in July 1923, under Soviet rule. The region was 4,400 sq.km in area, or 5.1% of the total area of the Azerbaijan Republic. It included the districts of Shusha, Askeran, Hadrut, Mardakert and Martuni (the last three districts had not been so named until then) and the city of Stepanakert (which was called Khankendi until the early years of Soviet rule). Nagorno-Karabakh is an integral part of the present Azerbaijan Republic and is one of the territories to which Armenians were moved on a mass scale from 1820. Today the Autonomy and seven surrounding regions are under occupation by the Armenian Republic. The Nagorno-Karabakh problem is rooted in the 18th century, when Armenians were moved from the Iran Plateau and Anadolu and relocated to Karabakh, a determined policy of the Iranian political elite. The Armenians gradually increased in number and began making territorial claims on Azerbaijan. They continued their separatist activities during the Karabakh khanate and organized campaigns by external forces against it. After Russian occupation of the khanate in 1805, the relocation of Armenians there, as well as to Nakhchivan and Irevan, was intensified. In order to formalise this process some paragraphs were even appended to the Turkmenchay Treaty in 1828. The Armenians began making concrete territorial claims on Karabakh, Nakhchivan and Irevan from the beginning of the twentieth century with strong support from Iran and Russia. In pursuit of this goal, Armenians perpetrated genocide in 1918 throughout Azerbaijan. The main aim was to create a "Great Armenia, from sea to sea”. After the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in 1918 Irevan, the historically ancient territory of Azerbaijan was ceded to the Armenians and the issue seemed to be resolved. Further, during Soviet rule Zangazur and Goycha were given to Armenia. Thus, Russia and Iran realized their aims not only to separate Azerbaijan from Turkey, but also to split Nakhchivan from Azerbaijan geographically. However, their repeated attempts to annex Karabakh to Armenia in the Soviet era were in vain. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Armenians in Karabakh had already armed and they began operations there in 1988. Large-scale military operations were halted with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, and Nagorno-Karabakh together with another seven, adjacent, regions of Azerbaijan - Lachin, Kalbajar, Aghdam, Fizuli, Jabrayil, Gubadli and Zangilan - were occupied by Armenia. The separatist regime in Nagorno-Karabakh declared its “independence” in 1991. This “independence”, which does not comply in any way with international law, rightly remains unrecognized by any country

You are showing such level of stupidity and lack of knowledge that I don’t know if there’s a way out for you! Armenians were always around. Turks were in this region since 1000 yrs ago. Russians took this land from Qajar dynasty in 1820s and started to increase Armenian population to create barrier between Russian empire and two muslim states: Qajar empire and Ottoman Empire and to do so they brought Armenians from all over Middle East. So stop putting stupid comments and go read a bit of history and not the biased made up jokes some call history.

@Rafael Resende Goldschmidt interesting that Armenia is totally monoethnic country while Azerbaijan comprises different nations and people of different faith cohabiting centuries together. Besides, Armenia is not in good relation even with Christian Georgia neighbors, just because Armenia backed Russia when Georgia was struggling with pro-Russia separatists at its lands. Armenia also supported Crimea annexation, enough reasons not to like at least their government, maybe the common people of Armenia would like to live at peace with its neighbors, but obviously not its government.

Then one more detail: Berg-Karabach was given to Azerbaijan bei Stalin (1921), who never asked for the opinion of the 94,4% of its population, and these 94,4% were all Armenians. Fair?

Runna I do understand your concern as Azerbaijani. Many people from Armenian and Azerbaijani side died because of that deep conflict. I wish they didn't. I am not going to talk about propaganda I will underline some historical facts. 1. Yes Nagorno-Karabakh population is 80-90% Armenian and I do agree but almost 700.000 people had to leave from surrounding districts and the name of those districts changed by Armenian government which undermines peaceful resolution. There was not any Armenian leader who talked about release of those territories (even 1sm2) 2. United Nations has adopted 4 resolutions about immediately withdrawal Azerbaijani 'occupied' territories which officially recognizes the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan within international borders. 3. Last year the president of Armenia refused any withdrawal 7 surrounding districts in Russia saying that 'Karabakh is Armenia and full stop' which again poured benzin to the fire. 4. This is an internationally disputed area but in two years the Armenian president changed the name of that land to Artsakh included all occupied territories. 5. Azerbaijan has a document for that land and all respected countries admits that including Armenia as UN member. I am for peace and dignity in the region and I think that nobody should die but Armenian society has to understand that without liberation of those lands there will be no peace in the region.

@@orkhanalakbarli4350 You attacked Karabach, not vice versa. So it is the responsibility of your government that your people had to flee. If you had recognized Karabach, you could have had your villages back, under some safety conditions of course as you are a very aggressive country which has launched the third war now - since 1991 - against small Karabach. There was a great chance that Karabach and Azerbaijan lived peacefully next to each other and nobody had to flee, neither the Azeris nor the Armenians but you organized pogroms, expelled 500.000 Armenians, most of who did not even know Armenian, and started three wars against a small and at the beginning isolated and unarmed population of the Karabach Republic. Not really very dignified or courageous. Also now, a cowards' war: drones, islamist militants, turkish hidden officers, national minorities, ruining towns and villages with almost no population left ... there is no dignity in all this. But you think only in terms of territories, not lives. I repeat again: Karabach as an independent republic (neighter Armenian nor Azeri) could have lived peacefully next to Aserbaidschan and the local Azeris would have lived there as they did before, but Azerbaidschan started spilling the blood and has been doing so for the past 30 years. Ask yourself, why your government chose and many of you supported this way instead of peace with a neighbor, where also Azeris (40 thousand against 150 thousand Armenians) would have continued to live in peace.

@@runnarunna151 H However you just mentioned above not talk about propaganda, you are breaking that rule. Why Azerbaijan should recognize Nagorno-Karabakh? because Armenians are the majority or because Armenia wants to combine it in? Armenians have a country named Armenia just next to Azerbaijan if they do not like Azerbaijan they can go and live there as many Armenians moved from Azerbaijan to Armenia and many Azerbaijanis from Armenia moved to Azerbaijan at the beginning of the '90s. The world recognizes that territory as a part of Azerbaijan and Armenians have the right to live together with Azerbaijanis as they live in Turkey and in Georgia as they live everywhere. Just a year ago the Armenian side strictly refused Madrid principles which were demanding withdrawal immediately 5 surrounding districts and 2 of them should have been later. Again it is not propaganda, it is what exactly written in the documents. Armenian society does not want to give back Nagorno-Karabakh, that is obvious because it fought for that land in the '90s. Not only Karabakh but also surrounding districts as well. Knowing the ideology of your nation, I would say that the Armenian side is not going to compromise anything in that conflict, now I am asking you how peace can be put? Our promises: [officially revealed] 1. Providing equal rights for Armenians who live in Nagorno-Karabakh [Autonomy is also on the table] 2. Investing in Nagorno-Karabakh for establishing better infrastructure and economic progress 3. Opening communication lines with Armenia and restoring political-economic relations 4. Engaging Armenia in the regional projects which Armenia has been out in past years 5.Improving bilateral relations so Armenians may easily visit Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan can easily visit Armenia which opens new horizons in a peaceful process. Armenians and Azerbaijanis live in peace in different corners of the world so they can do it in Nagorno-Karabakh too, just we should accept that we are neighbors and we can not be enemies forever.

Back in the day there wasn't a single western voice raised nobody cared just because the the people got killed were Turks or Muslims .Do you have any idea what it feels like not to being able to go back to your mother land visit your childhood visit graves of your loved ones list goes on . There are no jihadis fighting behalf of Azerbaijan that is just a black propaganda by Armenians because now they learned a lesson in a hard way Azerbaijan has an army too unlike 30 years ago and have a better equipped and far much greater one And never forget .Armenians are the one who started this war then Azerbaijan is using their rights to protect themselves and self defense governed by the international laws .Also there is not a single country who Considers Karabakh as Armenian territory Actually according to UN and all the countries under UN roof Karabakh has been considered and recognized as Azerbaijani territory under unlawful occupation of Armenia !!! I think that self explanatory .By the way Azerbaijan has an army of 100K and has reserves easly can go up to millions if it comes to that but in entire Armenia forget about their army entire population is less then 2 MIl Actually Armenians are the ones who brought 2000 Kurdish fighters by paying them $600 and proven with supported evidence unlike Armenians jihadi claims which has been never proven other then someone saying so as a black propaganda

Karabakh is one of the ancient historical regions of Azerbaijan. The name Karabakh is a combination of the words “gara” (black, big) and “bagh” (garden, land). The word “Karabakh” as a name given by Azerbaijani people to their land first appeared in primary sources of the 7th century. In dealing with the subject of Karabakh, the first question to be answered is: where is this place and which areas of Azerbaijan does it cover? The answer to this question is especially relevant today for any understanding of the “Nagorno-Karabakh problem” created by the Armenian separatists. To answer this question we will refer first to Mirza Jamal Javanshir Garabaghli, the vizier of the Azerbaijani Karabakh khanate, who wrote in his book The History of Karabakh (1847): "According to the ancient history books the borders of Karabakh region are as given below: the Araz River in the south, from Khudaferin Bridge to Sinig Bridge. The eastern border of Karabakh is marked by the River Kura that flows into the River Araz in the village of Javad and runs into the Caspian Sea. The northern border is the River Goran that stretches from Yelizavetpol (Ganja province is meant) to the Kura river which splits and reaches the Araz at different points. In the west it is bordered by the Kushbek, Salvarti and Erikli mountains - the high Karabakh mountain range.” A detailed description of Karabakh’s territories and borders during the first period of Russian occupation and colonialism is drafted on the following basis: 1. This information was written by an official directly involved in Russia’s governance of Karabakh, in other words, the information is based on official documents; 2. Further, this is not only grounded in reality and experience, it is also backed up by primary sources. It was not by whim that Mirza Jamal referred to history books to substantiate his position. It is clear that the name “Karabakh” has long applied not just to the political-geographical area “Nagorno-Karabakh” but to the whole territory of Karabakh - its mountains and its plains. In other words, the name "Nagorno-Karabakh” is not a historical toponym, but is a name given to a part of Karabakh in the cause of separatism. Logic supports this argument: if mountainous (Nagorno) Karabakh exists, then plain and lowland Karabakh also exist. This is the reality: there are today both mountainous Karabakh and lowland Karabakh in Azerbaijan. In addition, both lowland and mountainous (Nagorno) Karabakh have been Azerbaijani homelands in all historical periods, home to the people who have the words “gara” and “bagh” in their lexicon. Hundreds of ancient and rare examples of folklore and musical treasures first appeared in Karabakh and are closely associated with this place. Several generations of Azerbaijani archaeologists have studied and introduced to the world’s academics the Guruchay culture (Palaeolithic period), the Leylatepe culture (Eneolithic), the Kura - Araz culture (early Bronze Age), the Uzerliktepe culture (middle Bronze Age), the Khojaly-Gedebey culture (late Bronze and early Iron Ages), as well as hundreds of historical monuments of the ancient and medieval periods. International archaeology has long accepted these monuments as belonging to the history of the Azerbaijani people and these monuments have nothing to do with Armenian history. This “independence”, which does not comply in any way with international

Artaskh was a province of Armenian kingdom from 189 BC till 387 AD. Where were Azeris at that time? Let me guess...herding cattle in the steppes of Central Asia. In 821 Artaskh formed Armenian principality of Khachen. In 1000 it was proclaimed the Kingdom of Artaskh. It kept it's autonomy even after Turkic invasions. In 1812 this region was acquired by Russian empire. In 1923 the Soviets established it as an Armenian majority region of Azerbaijan.

@@kinglong5726 I said before my note was not for a brainwashed idiot, you just identified yourself and called me your name. Armenians were brought en-mass to Nagorno-Karabakh after the Russian Persian War in 1820s, and often forcefully lodged within the mansions of local landowners. There are good books, if you can read Russian, of Russian historians of 19 century and diplomats which you can read yourself, without anyones help. All of the Christian activity in Karabakh is part of Caucasian Albanian heritage, which Armenians so "gracefully" keen to privatise. It is your choice to continue your life as a brainwashed specie when it comes on this topic.
