Great video! The first sundays of the month, all of Italy's monuments, museums, archelogical sites, galleries and gardens are free! There are some exceptions such as private galleries. Also, the only "low season" in italy is January to mid-March. Its a major tourist destination for good reason - lots to see and do, affordable, great food, great landscapes, great history, great people!

Great video! I plan to go on 14 day trip to Amalfi coast in September. From Rome to Naples (visiting Vesuvius and Pompei), then further to Sorrento, Capri, Positano, Amalfi, Ravello and back to Rome. It is a quite expensive trip but it is worth it to see at least once in a lifetime!

The Amalfi Coast is a stunning place! It is popular for a reason. I went last July and I felt like it was the busiest in Amalfi town, where we arrived at around 5pm after our hike from Maiori through Sentiero dei Limoni, Minori, Ravello and Atrani. I personally didn't find any of these places, but Amalfi town overcrowded. That's a place you need to go really early in the morning, if you want to enjoy it more.

Your photography of the Almalfi Coast was fantastic! Could not believe the huge crowds of tourists in October. I guess that will be the rule now since the summers are too hot to be in Europe. But you managed to show that you could appreciate Europe, if one avoided the touristy towns for the smaller towns. The visit to Pompeii was very impressive too.

We were on the coast 9.28-10.4 and stayed in Seino/Vico Equense but at the Grand Hotel Angiolieri (which was amazing.) Luke you guys, the crowds were too much. We took a ferry to Capri (very confusing when we had to switch ferries but was not told when we purchased tickets.) We hired a private driver for everywhere else. On our drive along the coast, we opted out of walking around Positano. Amalfi was miserable crowded and we loved Ravello! Especially the villas. We toured Herculaneum instead of Pompeii (no crowd). We also visited Reggia Caserta and loved it. I would do it all over again. And I can't imagine May-Early September crowds.

We have a day in Naples at the end of October with my parents and our three kids (3, 10, and 13) - we were considering a day trip to Capri or Amalfi coast towns and now I’m thinking we should adjust expectations…maybe pizza and gelato in Naples and call it a day? Do you think because everyone says to get the earliest bus or ferry, it would help to wait until mid-day? Are there better transportation options? Those crowds have me nervous, especially with kids. We’d all be in tears with that bus situation…if you did this again, what would you change?

We stayed in Sorrento and went to Amalfi and Pompeii early last July and while everywhere was busy it wasn't half as crowded as this. Everybody must have thought they were going to avoid the crowds, but instead they created their own huge crowd. We toured the Amalfi Cathedral with no line at all. Don't miss. It was warm but not any worse than a nice day on the West coast of the US. November can be surprisingly cool and damp. I would go back in a heartbeat!

Just FYI…there were no lemons in October because lemon season is in spring. In October, the new crop is just starting to grow. All of the fruit is green (limes) because almost all limes are just future lemons, picked early before they turn into yellow lemons. So,all of the fruit in October is green, thus blending in with the green trees…

We visited Sorrento for a few days in August, back in 2016, it was very pleasant and although reasonably busy, it was by no means over crowded. Wow, what a difference when we stayed in Sorrento in late September in 2023! The crowds were just ridiculous. Prices had shot up too. Sadly we won't be returning, which is a shame, but my idea of a great holiday doesn't include queues and crowds of people everywhere. If you're OK with crowds, then do visit Sorrento/Amalfi coast, as it is beautiful.

I usually head that way sometime from mid April to the beginning of May, and stay until the beginning of June. This year I will be going early too, (mid March), but will be in Sicily for the first 2 weeks before heading to Sorrento, so, earlier than usual! It can be a bit coolish in early April for sure, so pack some layers along with a good windbreaker, especially needed on the ferries going back and forth if you like to sit up top- outside like I do! I am not sure everything will be completely open by then, but they will be starting, if they are not. Many place along the Amalfi coast are closed all winter until spring....but flowers will be starting to bloom, and I think you will fall in love with the area. I DO prefer spring to fall here, because of the crowds. I usually head north to Venice, Lake Garda/ Lake Como for the fall, so you might want to try that next trip!

Thank you so much! I’m going to be honest , it was long and crowded but doable. I think Tommy sat on the floor for most of the ride on the steps inside the door :/ Hopefully it won’t be as crowded for you. Bizarre for so off season - Safe Travels!

Wow! Wife and I are starting to plan a 2 week Italy trip for October and these crowds are making me rethink our itinerary. Also surprised to see people swimming in October, didn’t realize it would be that hot. We are thinking Dolomites, Lake Garda, Venice… not sure what else to squeeze in there, was thinking Slovenia but leaning towards more time in Italy, perhaps cinque terre

I wouldn't suggest trying to squeeze in too much and multiple countries. 2 weeks is not very much time. A month wouldn't even scratch the surface of Italy.

Yea I would rethink your plans too especially for the high tourist destinations. It was way too busy for us! The water was wonderful swimming and still very warm.

Hi guys, I am surprised about the crowds as you are but just think that off season away from the mediterranean you would probably be wearing a big coat to keep warm and a lot more people are travelling off season? Chris from Sydney, Australia. 😮

Just crazy this crowds. October is not off season anymore. Summer crowds, summer weather. I am in Cyprus right now and some places are also still crowded. Ichnusa beer is from Sardinia. You should go, very beautiful island, some charming towns and amazing beaches. I have been last year in May and it really wasn't crowded. But let say Rome. It crowded 12 months per year.

It is the buses in Amalfi that are true crowded. I recommend sharing a taxi because it is worth every penny when people are pushing and fighting. It is like Survivor.

Do you need a permit to fly the drone over large crowds in Italy? Are there a lot in use at same time, making it a little stressful to avoid? Edit: Removed question about what month you were there since I asked before you said October.
