There are HEAVY references to prior games and lore -id definately say that the *full* effect are definately on for those who did play those prior games BUT the game is fairly standalone and you can play and enjoy it without them.

The references are similar to Marvel movies. You will get more enjoyment if you get the references, but they are not necessary to enjoy the movie by itself.

Some tips for you while you're getting started: Keep your casters away from enemies, they can attack much further than your melee fighters but can't take as much damage and are easier to hit. You don't have to click on the hotbar icon to do a basic attack. It is your default attack action, so if all you want to do is just a normal attack, you can simply click the enemy, if they are close enough, you will automatically run up and attack. If you need to run by an enemy but not planning on attacking, use the disengage ability, it will stop them from being able to get a free hit on you when you run from them. Right click to examine enemies, it will give you a lot of useful information such as their weaknesses and resistances. Jump can be used as a gap closer as long as you have enough movement left to use it, be warned that jumping will take up your bonus action though. Go through shadowhearts abilities and read them, she has some very useful tools that can give your party an edge. Shield of faith for example is fantastic because it will make one of your characters harder to hit by increasing their AC, or armor class. I believe it's a +2 to AC, which is actually huge because of you imagine rolling a die, enemies having to roll a 15 or higher rather than a 13 for example, can be very significant. Since your tiefling is a melee fighter that stands right in the thick of everything, you can imagine how useful it is. That ability is also a concentration ability, meaning it doesn't go away until you either A) long rest, B) the caster has their concentration broken by getting hit, or C) cast a different concentration ability such as bless (which is also another great cleric ability) Also remember the game gives you all the time in the world to plan a strategy. Sometimes it's best to see if you can use the environment to turn the tide by blowing up an explosive barrel with fireball for example. There are many approaches to combat, and it's fun finding out what they could be, especially when it works out how you wanted it to. Have fun!

Your fire spell is not like Shadowheart's - it summons a flame *to your hand* which you then have to throw as a separate action. It's actually more of an exploration spell for seeing in dark areas. Seconding the commenter who said to check your equipment, you already have better items than you started with (light crossbow > short bow, shortsword > dagger). And Astarion can dual wield. Enjoy the game - I'm not tired of it yet and I have racked up over 1000 hours!

Just to clarify for anyone reading this, that separate action is free the same turn you create the fire, but will take a full action to throw if you wait until a later turn

no matter how many first play-thrus i've seen .. Baldurs gate 3 is so immersive and fun. its great to see everyone's first play thru.. uniquely different starts each time ! you're doing great ,.. experiment.. don't be afraid to try spells of your other companions.. its how you get to learn about their abilities ! Above all just enjoy the journey.. I look forward to seeing more of your adventures !

The game is built In a way that you could have a very different experience from someone else. The subclasses can change things up quite a bit also For example someone could make gale a necromancer wizard which would be very different from someone making him an evocation wizard.

46:35 If an enemy is not within movement range you can use a jump, then a move (or vice versa) and then still attack. Dash uses up your action to allow you a second move - Jump does not, Jump is a bonus action.

This is true. However, using jump does use up 3 meters of your available movement, so if your character has 9 meters of movement left and you move more than 6 meters, jump can't be used. Something to keep in mind.

This is a great game! Like you - I didn't play these types of games before, but I loved it! First battles are tough, but you'll get better. Some tips: you have an action and a bonus action every turn, so be sure that you use both of them, 'cause you are not really using them at the moment. Bonus action is usually for healing and jumping, but some people (Astarion!) can do much more in their bonus actions (hide or dash, f.e.); you, on the other hand, can use rage as a bonus action (really helps in tough battles!). Try to keep casters (Shadowheart, Gale) at a distance, they are much better at dealing damage that way than being close to enemies. I hope you'll continue your journey, the story is great in this game!

You can do almost anything in this game, collect, destroy, throw, push; that includes people, enemies, chests and about anything you can interact with. For example throw an enemy into another if you're strong enough, collect a body to use for necromancy, steal a whole chest to destroy it later if you can't open it etc., or break it on spot.

Hello, I have been watching as many playthroughs as I can because I have never played a game like this in my life (I usually play stuff like Sims 4). I develped FOMO watching MadMorph's playthrough so bought it for my 60th birthday back in October. I restarted about 4 times before I felt comfortable enough to proceed further than The Emerald Grove and am now in act 3 trying to decide which way to go at the end (it is an impossible choice for me). So I have 2 new saves trying different classes and storylines. It is not a perfect game, there are bugs and glitches. Some of the story arcs are a bit iffy but good grief I love it, it has taken over my days (I currently have over 150 hours of gameplay on it). It has also spoilt other games for me, Wylde Flowers just seems so twee now. This is more than a game , it is an experience. xxx Have fun.

Hey, Lucy ) When your char stands beside an enemy, it is a bad idea to walk away from it (or just walk nearby), as it will always hit you with an extra attack (called "reaction"). This way you get 2x attacks from enemies (their normal attack on their turn and extra reaction attack on your turn). So if you fight melee, better keep standing on one place and kill the target before moving anywhere. Also try to keep chars with ranged attacks (archers and/or spellcasters) in a distance (it is harder for them to hit with spells or arrows in melee range; they also hit better standing on a high ground). When your char is downed, others can help him before he dies (with "help" action or better by throwing a healing potion right next to him, on the ground).

@@lucyjrobyn The main things that the game doesn't really explain well is that you have Move, Action, BonusAction each turn. Drinking a potion is bonus action, as are some abilities and spells. Most things are actions, etc. So you can use your action and still drink a potion of healing every round for example. Shadowheart can both attack and use healing word spell in the same round. (It uses up spell slots but you get those back when you long rest.) Also you can use the environment - at the start of the fight the enemies were stood around a red barrel. Hit that with a fire spell and see what happens. :)

@@lucyjrobyn Exactly. But if you really need to get away without triggering it, you can use action named "Disengage" (double arrows icon). However, in general, you can use only 1 "action" per turn (green dot) - on attack, cast, help, disengage, throw, dash, on whatever. Also, when you are planning your move, you sometimes can see that your path line is red in the middle. It means in this place you will step on a "bad surface" where you ll get damage (most often - fire), or on a "special surface" (yellow line color) where you get special effect (ice, darkness, cloud, acid etc). And because there is no need to spend all "movement meters" at once, it is better to make several small moves instead of 1 long one. You can even use tactics "come out, make a shoot, go away from a line of sight again". Movement and Action are 2 different things and you can use any whenever you want in whatever order - you don't lose movement after Action, for example.

In regards to the different "realms" the first two locations are both the same realm. Prime Material Plane, The World of Toril, continent of Faerun (this is a name you will hear often). The first location was the city of Baldur's Gate, the second location was Icewind Dale, to the northwest of the city. The last location was one of the Nine Hells. Avernus, the first layer.

I have to applaud you playing a game that you have zero familiarity with. The internet is ruthless when it comes to pointing out other people's failings. There were many times in the first installment where I wanted to put some snarky remark in the comments. Then I remembered that you haven't played a game of this sort before. I'm sure if i played chess online I would get scathing (and deserved) comments about the pitiful state of my game. Instead, I will simply say, "Welcome to BG3. Don't forget to save often, and learn from every encounter." Happy adventuring! (Also, at the very end when you couldn't figure out why you missed? You clicked on the door. I still do that all the time. Pay attention to the top of the screen. It will tell you what you're pointing at. )

Just remember to loot, loot, and loot. Bodies, casks, barrels, crates, just anything and everything. Pick up pouches and sacks to sort things like potions and scrolls, keys, etc. It makes inventory management easier.

This game is an "Absolute" masterpiece. When the year began there were two games, I was excited for Starfield and Baldur's Gate 3. Starfield completely and utterly flopped. But Baldur's Gate went above and beyond anything I was expecting. This is without a doubt the game of the year.

I’m with you. I have started the game over so many times because I want to see how a situation would work out with a different class. I’m now really trying to get through the story with my bard class.

Hotest of tips, turn off Karmic Dice asap. It's on by default and actively hurts your rolls.

Yeah, it is supposed to be a reactive system to counter too many bad or good rolls in a row. Which can screw you up in certain situations when the game has decided to give bad rolls for balance. There is also a "Add bonus" button when you roll. You get options there that can improve your odds for the roll. The most useful one is Guidance that Shadowheart provides. It is a cantrip, so there is no limit to how many times she can cast it. It is a concentration spell too however, where it will end any other spells she might be concentrating on. You can see if she is concentrating on anything under her portrait when she is selected.

They actually fixed these so that they don't hurt dice rolls - it was one of the first patches. It only comes to your benefit. I like playing with them on, but to each their own!

Very much enjoyed the video, welcome to Baldur's Gate! Here are some tips from an avid DnD player with a lot of hours in the game: 1. Understanding how Advantage and Disadvantage work is key in maximizing how many of your attacks hit. Essentially, when you make an attack that has advantage, you roll two dice and take the higher of the two results. The same goes for disadvantage, but you take the lower result. This either drastically increases or decreases your chance to hit the target. Various different things can grant advantage/disadvantage. The easiest ways to get advantage are to have an ally next to the enemy, i.e. threatening them, or to have your character enter stealth. These are especially useful for Astarion, as he is a Rogue so he has access to sneak attack, which deals loads of damage but requires you to have advantage against the target. 2. You can change the spells your characters have prepared at any time out of combat. This lets you pick which spells you want them to have access to during combat from a list that is tied to their class. For example, Gale has a different spell list from Shadowheart. Don't be afraid to test out different spells and see how they all work, as you can always get them back when you take a rest. 3. Gale is a great wizard, but he is a fragile little baby boy and needs to be coddled by your big beefy melee characters. You basically never wanna send him into melee range because he will be eviscerated immediately. Try to have your barbarian, Shadowheart, or Lae'zel head in close to the enemies and keep Astarion and Gale at a distance to maximize their chances of survival. 4. You can throw, and I can't stress this enough, ANYTHING in this game. You can chuck weapons, shoes, barrels of flammable oil, small people, and even potions. Throwing a health potion at a downed party member is a great way of reviving them at a distance and giving them a bit more health so they don't go down immediately again. You can also use this to your advantage if there are environmental hazards around. Are there some enemies standing on a small patch of fire? Throw a barrel of oil at them as an improvised explosive. As a side note, shoving is also very useful if you have good strength. You can often times push enemies into chasms or hazards to kill them easily. 5. As a barbarian, your main source of damage and survivability comes from your Rage ability. This gives you resistance to physical damage, extra damage on melee attacks, and some more powers down the line. You want to make sure you enter your rage at the start of tough combat encounters to get the most out of your class. The drawback of rage is that you have to make an attack on your turn or take damage in order to maintain your rage each round. If there are no enemies near you to melee attack, you can make a ranged or thrown attack to keep your rage going. 6. Jumping is incredibly useful for high strength characters, the distance you can jump being based off of your Athletics skill. This makes high strength character incredibly mobile, as you can jump as long as you have a certain portion of your movement left. If there's an enemy that's just barely too far to reach with your regular movement, instead of wasting an action to dash you can jump and then move the rest of the distance to close the gap. It's also very useful for getting out of environmental hazards like fire or acid without taking damage from strolling through them. Oh and one thing I forgot to mention about advantage, barbarian gets reckless attack which gives you free advantage on all your attacks for a turn at the cost of enemies having advantage against you. You can choose to use it before you attack, but you can also choose to use it after you see if the attack is going to hit or not. This can be very useful for bursting down enemies really quick, but its also risky as enemies will usually target a character that they have advantage against. Make sure you use it wisely!

OMG I've seen over a dozen beginning playthroughs of BG3 and I've NEVER seen anyone roll so badly trying to free Shadowheart! I was actually hoping you didn't succeed, because I've never seen what happens if you leave her there. I assume she gets out when the ship crashes, but does that change the relationship with her? Now I'm SO CURIOUS! 😁 Also it's interesting that your Lae'zel was the one who freed her. I wonder if that changes the acrimonious relationship they begin with? I really enjoyed the way you play. Hi Lucy, loved the playthrough and love BG3! Game of the year, no doubt! I do have a couple helpful hints for you though, to make things go a little smoother. ---Ability scores: The game doesn't do a great job of explaining these, but as a rule you always want to have these at even numbers. The bonuses you get happen at even numbers after 10. So for instance, a strength score of 12 would give a +1 bonus, a score of 13 would also give a +1 bonus and a score 14 would give a +2 bonus. Scores under 10 give a penalty. A score of exactly 10 gives no bonus or penalty. So basically, the "recommended" scores that the game gives you aren't ideal. You will have an opportunity to adjust these later if you wish. ---Dice rolls during dialog: When making a dice roll during a dialog check there will often button under the die graphic that says, "Add Bonus". If you click this, you will have some options to increase your dice rolls. Very handy. ---Barbarians: This is a very fun class to play but they are at their best when they are Raging. Rage is a barbarian's signature power, but you never used it. If you are facing a room full of enemies, by all means use Rage! ---Wizards: These guys aren't melee fighters. They cast spells. From a distance. ---Gear: Don't forget to equip your gear when you find it. You have a bag full of crossbows but none on your characters. ---Health potions: You can heal not just by drinking them, but by throwing them at your allies. You can even hit multiple people standing near each other (even nearby enemies) with a single potion. This doesn't make much logical sense, but it works. ---Environment: There are certain objects in the game world that can be blown up if they come in contact with fire. In particular, certain barrels. There were a couple those in that room you fought that last group of enemies. Hit these with a firebolt or something similar while the enemies are standing near them. Enemies can use this against you too, so be careful where you are standing! ---Opportunity attacks: Moving away from an enemy within melee range can trigger these. You kind of beat yourself in that last fight by giving the enemy so many free hits on you. ---Quick saves: F5 will be your best friend in this game. Get in the habit of using it early and often. Cool, always glad to help 😀 Melee fighters like your barbarian & Lae’zel excel at close up combat, clerics are good support with some melee skills, while wizards excel at ranged combat (favorite early wizard spells: Magic Missile, Chromatic Orb, Misty Step). If possible, approach combat from stealth; rogues like Astarion can one-shot weaker enemies with sneak attacks. Once combat starts, rogues can’t do the sneak attacks until another melee fighter is hitting the enemy, so if possible send the fighter in first. Controlling the battlefield is important and the game gives you lots of tools to do that-throw bottles of grease & watch the enemy fall down; throw a void bulb into group of enemies & watch them all get pulled into the middle. One my favorite moves is to sneak up & have Shadowheart cast create water on a group of enemy (it may not trigger a battle since it’s just water) and then have Gale toss a Chromatic Orb-ice or electric do double damage if enemy is wet and will freeze or electrify the whole wet surface. That slows the enemy down and the can make them fall down. Don’t move characters if it’s going to create an Opportunity attack. Shadowheart has a spell Healing Word that is a bonus action that can be cast long distances.Since it is bonus action, Shadowheart can do an attack with guiding bolt and heal a downed teammate in one turn. If Shadowheart is out of healing potions, can throw healing potions, creates small healing puddle that revive downed teammate. Whenever possible, try to draw enemies through choke points like doorways so you can face them one at a time. Before combat, look at battlefield and see if enemy are standing close to something explosive-it’s very satisfying to take out a group of baddies standing next to a cast of firewine 😁 Characters can actually carry those barrels of firewine around and throw them at enemies as needed. There’s lots more but best is just getting used to the mechanics so I’m sure you’ll be notching victories in no time 😊

@@wawho9645 A little addition, if I may: it is still possible for rogues to do sneak attacks without melee fighters. They can Hide as a bonus action to give an advantage, though sometimes it can be difficult to get out of an enemy's sight. If that's improbable there are other ways to create an advantage on an attack, such as casting guiding bolts, faerie fire, turning invisible or blinding the enemy. My personal favourite was getting Astarion to wear both Cloak of Cunning Brume (creates a foggy cloud when the wearer disengages, blinding the enemy close by) and Eversight Ring (prevents the wearer from being blinded). Helped me get the upper hand of many battles that got too up-close and personal for my likes😄

First time I’ve seen Lazel free Shadowheart 🎉 They might even become friends 😊 Be warned though that this game can consume LOTS of time…

Great video! The game can be slightly overwhelming at first. Shadowhearts a cleric so shes your best healer. If you need it heal, heal, heal. She also more of a caster than a physical fighter. Her defensive spells make her quite tanky aswell. Astarion is a rouge so he can hit critical range and critical melee hits for bigger damage it can really help turn a fight. When the enemy has threatened status under his health bar. Drop those crits. And gale is a wizard. His spells hit like a truck but wizards have low health so keep him out of melee range as much as possible and cast from distance. Your character and laezel are the up and close fighters. They can make enemies bleed and knock them off their feet. You can short rest your party 2 times and then you have to long rest at camp. The party will tell you if they get tired. The camp is like the normandy on mass effect. Its the way you can talk to people and get to know them better! ✌️

​​​​@@lucyjrobynthe ironic thing is you can change all of that. Since you went evocation wizard on gale he can use evocation spells even if allies are in the way because of sculpt spells they do have to be evocation though. So things like burning hands, chromatic orb, magic missle and thunderwave

Daaaamn I never knew that jumping into the hole in that first area dropped you down into the rectory. Talk about a rough situation -- those enemies were tough, and the way you entered was with no advantage whatsoever. It was a cursed position to start a fight in, but wow, just never knew that was a reality for some players. Brutal lol.

I've been waiting for my own game to arrive (gonna be a while yet), so watching streamers play. I haven't seen anyone who drops through the hole survive the fight there, if they run it before going through the chapel door. Once you have Astarian, you can get through most locked doors. lol. I like being able to wander anywhere, but going to an area too soon is painful for the party. ;) Hope you had fun playing.

Absolutely savage from the dice😭

Things I wish someone told me when I started playing - when rolling dice, you can add bonuses,to make your final result bigger.. If you have Shadowheart in your party, she has guidance, that automatically increases your result by 1 to 4 (1d4). Potions and elixirs in your inventory also can be added by add bonus button. You can equip ranged weapons on everybody, if they have proficiency in them. You can switch between melee and ranged as you wish! But if enemy has resistances to piercing, slashing, and bludgeoning damage, then magic is your best bet! You can use barrels to hit them with fire, to make an explosion, you could have killed half of that group at the end by exploding oil barrel that was there! It's best to pick up and send to camp all the barrels you find, via right-click menu, so you can have some fun with them later on, place 50 barrels that are combustive in the area, and watch the fireworks! Oil barrels, firewine, and powder are the best for that! If you want, you can respec and dual-class shadowheart, to boost her offensive spells, to have more options with her! You will soon meet the guy who can do that for small fee! First I changed trickery domain to tempest, to make her the queen of thunder and lightning, and I added 2 levels in wizard, cause the wizards are the ONLY class that can learn spells from scrolls, for money! I added 2nd level in wizard, so she can use AOE spells without worrying about friendly fire, with 2nd level in wizard, every spell creates a pockets of safety around allies! And I know that wizards use Intelligence as primary stat, but there's a headband of intellect in the game, that boost INT to 17, but I won'ttell you where it is, no spoilers!

Its going to take a long time to get used to the combat, the spells and the games whole mechanics. About 10 hours in i still had not fully gotten used to it all. It didnt help me not playing dnd before. Hopefully your slight experience on dnd may help you along the way. But the time and investment is worth it in the end. This game is glorious!

Lucy I enjoy watching your gameplay. My only suggestion is to avoid moving away from a combatant once you are engaged in a fight. You are giving your opponent a free opportinuity attack when you do so. Also, in challenges lean into your character's strengths (like her might) and avoid contests involving her weaknesses. It seems unlikely that a barbarian will do well in a challenge involving intelligence because of the assigned stats. Good Luck!

Not sure what difficulty you chose ,but if new to crpgs no shame in starting in story mode. Edit: also please take the time to check out your parties spells, so many times you ask for healing or if you can do something with plenty of the answers sitting in you parties spell lists. Gl in the future

The first Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 games are epic and groundbreaking but they were made over 20 years ago so they are very different than this game, both in video game play-style and the actual D&D ruleset. There are a few easter eggs. The main connection is that the Forbidden Realms world of Faerun is one of the main D&D settings and that is why it is popular to call this game Baldur's Gate.

I like your character

Just advice if your still going to use this character still, is that two Barbarian classes be yourself and Karlach if you recruit her, Shadowheart for healing and checks in conversation and either Gale or Lae'zel makes the most OP team. You just seem to overwhelm people in melee fully or have a caster like Gale just to play long range support. When you do go to rest, swap all your character around to make sure everyone is equally leveled.

if you think you can do something, you can most likely can do it, even throw the enemy off the "map" or set up explosive, before attacking, just to blow them up, you can skip some fights doing that. just save as many exploding like items, just in case ;-) either way, be creative and it may serve you well, and dont be afraid to save-scum (aka keep reloading saves).

​@lucyjrobyn you can always change it later after you get to a specific npc but when you level up there are often options. Might be fine he is a evocation wizard so you don't have him friendly fire. Your barbarian will gain a subclass at 3rd level. You get a choice of Berserker - you just want to attack more and throw things. Wildheart - gets animal abilites and featues, allows for special moves and such. Wildmagic - gives some magic effect. It's mostly random. You can also give spell slots back to spellcasters.

You need to review the bar at the bottom as you did not use many of the options you have for combat, RAGE being a must for a Barbarian. I suggest you watch some non spoiler tips for new players as you do not have experience with DnD enough to understand all the options you are missing. You can also learn a lot of quality of life tricks too, there is an amazing group of content creators for this game, take advantage of them,. Good Luck!

I didn't click right away from the start from the sheer amount of mechanics and things you have to familiarize yourself, but once you start getting used to it the game becomes an absolute bliss to explore ! I think the origin "Dark urges" is considered "Canon" as far as the story goes for reasons I won't spoil, but it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things !

There's no particular character that's 'canon', I don't think. They did say they advise saving the dark urge for a non-first playthrough, though. The character does exist in the world even when not played and the bits of their story that happened before the game still happened. You can find them ingame (as the white dragonborn guy), though they're easy to miss.

No Mass Effect reference can ever be stupid. 😉

Are you sure you are a natural red? you looks so blond to me xD Ok enough bithing around, you can heal your team with potions and spells ... shadowheart has some spells in the center part of her hotbar and the potions are in the right part of any character hotbar (they are there right now and you can also remove them and right click / drink on them from the inventory) that actually have those in the inventory. Be aware that you have limited spells slots each day and once you use 1 you consume it for the day. But you can end the day at any point (outside of combat) to recharge them so not a big deal. Also take a look on the spells you have prepared and the one you have NOT prepared so you can plan ahead every combat But above all, enjoy your game as much as you can ;) PS: Last tip for today i promise ;) You can click on the green circle (action) and on the orange triangle (bonus action) to see what you can do with that specific resource at any point in and out of combat. Just know that you can do mostly 1 action and 1 bonus action each turn, for now ;)

As someone who found you via Cyberpunk and followed your journey there, excited to see. your playthrough for Baldur's Gate specifically because it's not a game I play. I've heard great things, but neither fantasy games nor turn-based isometric dice/rng gameplay are my thing -- so being able to see what it's like is great. Especially since our tastes seem similar it’s a good indicator for me. Does the character having dialogue, but it being just silence while the characters listen quietly and react as if you are actually speaking throw you off? Watching, that seems super awkward. P.S., I don't remember when you started Cyberpunk and Mass Effect there being so many kind of hostile, gatekeep-y comments (not speaking of the ones with helpful tips etc.).

So glad to have you here choom! The dialogue and conversation is definitely much different compared to Cyberpunk. I don’t find it awkward as such but defo required a lot more reading and thinking, cyberpunk is far more cinematic as well

As with all videogames that give hit percentages, they're never accurate. If it's not 100% to hit you'll probably miss half the time. I've missed far too many >90% and been hit with too many
