I have a 2004 Z4 6 speed manual (currently only 57,000 miles). It is a joy! I do all maintenance and repair myself, using only genuine BMW or OEM parts, otherwise it would be very expensive for a shop to maintain. It does rip through tires, (especially rear tires). I plan to keep it forever.

That’s awesome! I don’t put too many miles on my either because I daily drive my BMW E92 328i. But like you, I love it when I take it out. Thanks to our doing virtual school this semester due to the coronavirus, I have been using the Z4 to go to and from work since I don’t have to drop the kids off at school. Silver lining, right? Hi there... and greetings from New Zealand. I too own a Z4 (2006 2.5i). Moreover just like you she is my top down fun weekender. Over the past twenty odd years I have owned Porsche 928‘s, two 1986 S2 five speeds and a 1990 S4 Auto and a 1986 911 wide Body Cabriolet and just like you Z4,s had always been in my thoughts. Eventually I got to drive one and from that moment on, I was sold. The reason why was really simple, unlike the Porsche‘s the Z4!brought back the fun in motoring about on back country roads and weekends away. I’d previously owned MG‘s and I’d owned a 1973 Triumph TR6, so the Z4 to me brought back a lot of happy memories, but with build quality, reliability and road holding. Which brings me to your comment about your Z4‘s high speed stability, just recently I was putting my Z4 through her paces against a late model Mercedes ML350 and needless to say as soon as I entered a very long and winding piece of highway the Mercedes just couldn’t keep up the pace. This didn’t surprise me, but it also made me realise how incredibly stable and sure footed the Z4 was, enough to say that she was handling as beautifully as a 928 (not a comment that I have ever made before for any other car, ever !!) So I’m wondering if perhaps if the suspension and wheels on my Z4 are possibly the reason why, because she has been fitted with 18” M Sport rims and suspension upgrade. Anyway thanks for the video and BTW I am your latest subscriber. Kind Regards Howard

Great review even after all these years! That pint about the Boxster driver seating in the middle and on the Z4 sitting way back almost over the rear axle makes this, to me a better looking car. That look wins every time. Plus performance to match, of course.

Nice review! I recently picked up a 2005 Z4 3.0i, also with manual transmission. As you point out, it's a great 3rd car/weekend car, and I'm really enjoying it. I was pleasantly surprised by the feel of the electronic steering - I haven't really noticed the center dead spot and the feel through the wheel is good - I can feel it loading up while cornering. As far as the ride quality, I think that will improve once I ditch the run flats.

Great review! A few comments...(and it took me close to a year to discover this) is that the cupholders are actually an incredibly useful design as they RATCHET so they hug even smaller cups if you adjust them. At first, I thought, as you did, that they were completely useless unless you had an ideally-sized large-diameter cup. Not so. You just need to snug the holder right up against the cup and it will be really secure. It's unfortunate that that is not obvious as I'm sure (like me) most drivers of this gen z4 thought, "it's useless." I really could not be happier with my 2004 Z4 3.0i. The first thing that anyone who buys one has to ensure is that they ditch the run-flat tires. The car cannot hold a straight line with those...kind of unfathomable that BMW engineers allowed the car to be sold with that tire. It literally zigs and zags all over the place and is incredibly numb on-center. I will likely create a video review of the car as I have some definite opinions I'd like to share. Thanks again for the review of what is a truly underrated and fantastic car.

Took a hard hit from a Ford Explorer to rear-end at about 40 miles an hour, I was at a stop and watch her coming in nano-seconds, the hoit push me under a Pathfinder in front of me. Second, the steering can be slightly less responsive when it's really hot. You are correct that it's inherent problem in the early models, and I don't see the point of changing anything since the same problem could resurface with a different steering column. it looks like an engineer, architect , or artists will drive this car. Yes is has a long hood, but actually its in scale. The crease goes from the front all the way to the door handle which makes it loook longer. Very interesting how they made the line where the hood closes continue back to under the doors. Id buy one , only hang up is I heard that it can have a lifter ticking problem , which Ive heard is a non issue if driven a lot and frequent oil changes.

I really haven't had engine issues with either of my BMWs. In terms of driving enjoyment, this car is on par with the Porsche Boxster, but it will be more reliable and cheaper to maintain than the Boxster. Best of luck in your decision!

Thanks for your comment, S F. This video is geared toward the BMW Z4s that were sold in the North American market. The e86 refers to the coupe, and the e85 refers to the roadster, even in cases where the roadster was produced from 2006-2008. The si came out in 2006 in North America, and it was the "sporty version" of the regular Z4. The M versions became available during that same year. Prior to 2006, the "sporty" version was the 3.0i. The first generation Z4 is an awesome car regardless of which model you have. Thank you for watching, and stay tuned for more videos!

the reason its unstable on the highway is due to the electronic power steering , its BMW's first EPS and its terrible the center straight area is twitchy. Ive had a Z4 3.0 for 16 years, EPS failed and i ordered all the parts from the MZ4 hydraulic power steering , far far far better straight line and steering feel.

@@GogoMotoring £500 for parts , did the job myself , the most expensive part is the Z4M Intermediate shaft as you cant find any second hand , got that new from bmw for £300. Reading the forums some guys just tighten up the existing shaft to grab the spline as theres a 1mm difference. With it being steering though i think it better to get the right part. The rest are just e46 parts like the rack (purple tag) and the pump etc all very cheap. Need to code out the EPS light but other than that its a lot better drive! Some might say you lose slight amount of horsepower , i just made myself loose a stone of my fat ass to compensate. i noticed no difference.

GogoMotoring thanks for the reply, it’s your car so you can do what you want with it but I’d recommend leaving the car idling until the temperature gauge shows the car is up to temp before revving it above 3.5k rpm. Doing this will avoid a lot of unnecessary wear to your engine. Great content by the way!
