There is an anecdote about the Mig-29. When Western observers had their first close look, they said that surfaces had non planed rivets and from first glance thought of the work as kludge. The Mig-29 proved to have lower drag than expected and wind tunnel studies were done. The rivets were creating leading edge micro-vertices; they were reducing both wing and fuselage drag. It was a breakthrough and has since become a norm in airflow design.

    8 жыл бұрын

+Anaximander29A I don't know where you got those numbers but they're not true. I was the test pilot for this aircraft and was a MiG-29 instructor pilot as a USAF exchange pilot with the German Air Force. Without external fuel tanks, the Fulcrum's ferry range is about 500 nautical miles. With an external centerline fuel tank add about 150 NM. Lack of ferry range and combat endurance are weak points for the MiG-29. My shortest sortie in the Fulcrum was 16 minutes. That was a full load of internal fuel and I landed with about 1600 pounds of the total 7600 pounds the MiG-29A/B holds internally.

Howie Bartlett You obviously haven't heard of the MIG Project 1.44 MFI. Not to mention the stealth technology itself is a Russian project. Soviet engineer Petr Ufimtsev had created the mathematical theory and tools to do finite analysis of radar reflection. Only when Lockheed engineers translated most of his work into English they were able to made their "first evah, usa usa usa!" hangar dominator to scare banana republics. In case you didn't know - over the horizon radars are able to detect any "stealth" shit thousands miles away. They always were able. That's why his work was declassified and published. So calm your tits chairborne ranger and try to impress someone else.

The MIG-29 is vastly superior in regards to manoeuvres, and in passive threat detection, but the F-15 is superior in overall avionics. It's actually well known that Russian planes are far superior to Western ones in regards to manoeuvring thanks to their vectored thrust and the way how their fuselage fluidly blends into the wings, and they generally have a fair bit more range as well. But Western planes are vastly superior in avionics, while the Soviet/Russian planes were always very basic in that sense.

@lxapilot118 I was a MiG-29 exchange pilot with the German Luftwaffe. It's a German flight jacket. The Germans didn't sew velcro on the left side of their flight jackets or flight suits due to pen/pencil pcokets. I am a graduate of the USAF FIghter Weapons School (F-16 class 92AIF).

I've worked on various civil and (mainly) military aircraft and FOD's a constant pain in the ass. The worse part is closing up areas, like engine or avionics bay covers, or fuel tank lids - that sort of thing - and you have to spend ages with a torch & mirror and a vacuum, checking and cleaning. I've found snips/side cutters (from another air base) inside a VC10 wing tank, that'd been flying around for 6 months or more.

@85LARGE The family model has no air-to-air radar. The front seater sits about where the electronics for a radar would be. The only radar in the 2-holer is a radar altimeter.

@SerB17995 The jet came from The Ukraine and had never seen service with the USAF. Two years were spent bringing it back to flight status. The first flight in Dec 2010 was the first time the jet had flown in 11 years.

  • @mig29fulcrumflyer

@acechris89 Your recollection is incorrect. There is no waiver involved in operating this jet in the CONUS. Civilian-owned supersonic aircraft in the US include the T-38, F-5, F-4,F-104, MiG-21, MiG-23 and MiG-29 (others?). The only restriction for supersonic operations is approved airspace or FAA operating limitations specific to each individual airframe. Currently, N129XX has no restriction limiting it to subsonic speeds (although the FAA is trying).

You'd have to ask the owner about the name. The owner is the guy doing all the talking at the end of the video. The name "Natasha" is no longer on the jet. The jet has been repainted to multiple shades of blue and gray.

@AmericanAviator Fuel quantity is displayed in kg. Mass is more indicative of the energy in a volume of fuel as it expands and contracts with temp. Internal fuel is 7600 lb. Fuel burn varies with speed, configuration, altitude. 220 lb for start. 44 lb/min in ground idle. 3000 ft @ 0.5 mach (M) = 86 lb/min, 0.9M = 330 lb/min. 30,000 ft @ 0.5M = 70 lb/min, 0.9M = 110 lb/min. Full afterburner below 5000 ft = 1320 lb/min, 30,000 ft = 550 lb/min. All values approx due to variations in temp.

No. It's never taken off or landed at an airport other than UIN.. I'm the guy in the gray leather flight jacket in the video. The video is snippets from the first two test flights. on 10 Dec 2010. If you were in RFD then you probably saw the Su-27 Flanker restored by Pride Aviation. It flew on 10 Dec 2009.

  • @eyeAMtwinkEE

@IIproductionsII Yes by sight. If you might not have noticed, a large percentage of a plane's stealth is derived from its design. For instance the F117, which is purported to have nearly 75% of its stealth due to its planform shape. These designs are easily visibly identifiable. Cant post links, so here's quote: “It is an amazing looking aircraft. It has a Radar Cross Section (RCS) of just 0.5 square metres as compared to the Su-30MKI’s RCS of about 20 square metres.”
