First Female Chopper Pilot Hired At OC Fire Terminated During Probationary Period

Stacey Butler reports from Irvine where a crowd of people protested outside OCFA's headquarters in support of Desiree Horton, a 30 year veteran chopper pilot hired by OC Fire as the first female pilot ever, but let go just one year into her probationary period.

    She was terminated for incompetence. Just because she was a woman does not mean she was competent. You can bet that the department consulted counsel to make sure they had a solid case before they got rid of her. Remember, they are the ones who hired her in the first place, so it seems unlikely they would fire her simply because she was a woman.

  • @jericho1-4

    @jericho1-4

    Жыл бұрын

    @@efhjjfdth The fact of the matter is it's a male dominated occupancy for two fundamental reasons, The first unlike law enforcement and the military who will make concessions and accommodations during training specifically in the physical abilities aspect most women either ask for a DOR-Drop on requests where they are not penalized and can later reapply if they so wish to giving them more time to get in to a proper physical fitness requirement to perform the tasks. Or either don't want to do such a physically demanding job to begin with or during training or after a few years of service in their department that the physical and psychological drain from viewing numerous tragedies, not only from fires but other response calls is too much. And while the attrition rate for women is slightly higher its not more than 5% of their male counterparts as there are so few women who want to get into the fire services field their ratio is naturally higher based on personnel numbers. I work in critical disaster/mutual aid response and have some very talented female co-workers I would and have trusted with my life and that of my crew mates. Another thing is what is the SOP or what was acceptable at one division or department may not be acceptable at another and if you can't augment your training or compliance with a different divisions or departments SOP it can cause employment issues. This lady left CalFire a state wide fire service that gives a little more latitude to their ground personnel and air crews than county city or state regional mutual aid companies/departments do, They may have wanted her to fly differently than she has been and it caused the conflict that resulted in her termination. Bare in mind that ground and air crew personnel rely on their training and things become muscle memory she may be an exemplary pilot and aircraft commander and was doing what her instincts and muscle memory told her was the right thing to do and it might have been contradictory to how OC fire services did things. Many fire services and incident commanders have had incidents of confrontational attitudes with smaller county and state divisions departments and mutual aid companies from surrounding jurisdictions during a response call up. She was an independent thinker and a damn good pilot by all accounts, a top tier individual in her chosen profession and a team player, so I wouldn't call this her failure it sounds like they got a varsity player and they were looking for a jv they could mold to their way of doing things and she gave push back based on her years of experience. It's their loss not hers I can guarantee you she could find another posting in a heart beat with any number of in state or out of state fire services or privately contracted fire/rescue firms making not only a better salary but would be expected to speak up and fly her craft as she always has, safely and proficiently. If one looks at labor statistics all of the physically demanding occupations have a much higher rate of male employees than women and that is mainly do to women not wanting to enter those occupations, this isn't the 1950's anymore where women are basically bared from entering these occupational fields they are just choosing not to in significant numbers. Take the military for example, I trained the first lionesses for the USMC and was damn proud so many of my sisters ( over three hundred) volunteered for a posting that would have them become daily targets of terrorists simply because they were women. They went in knowing the training and operations expectancy would be very difficult and those who passed the indoc and selection process who then moved on to specialized training were eventually cut off at the knees by the likes of older woman in politics from senators to congresswoman who force the Marine Corps to shut the program down. A lot of them felt betrayed by these women in politics as they had not only earned their billet but the respect of the Marines they served with and The Marine Corps as a whole. The fact that some individuals still rely on this "boys club" as their argument is pretty baseless, I've known almost a hundred women who performed two of the hardest occupational specialist positions in the fire services, type 2 red card holders aka Hotshots and Smoke jumpers. These are extremely difficult positions to get into both have a very high fail and or attrition rate for ALL CANDIDATES who apply. Some of whom have given their lives alongside their male teammates, not every occupation is suited for everyone, people have a choice in the occupational endeavor. Would I fly in this lady's ship? if my crew were trapped in a crowning wildfire and requested evac and this lady came in and got us, or we had an emergency medivac situation and she was on the duty log in was the one to respond her gender is the last thing anyone cares about. Women are no less braver than a man no less skilled not less motivated than their male counterparts, those who are in the fire services are there cause they can do the job point blank period.

    wow, first of all, what a beautiful woman, she's so pretty. I los angeles county, the fire dept. was barre from conducting their own testing for candidates due to that exact same reason, the boys club mentality. Captains were giving the test answers to their kids, and family, the whole system is corrupt. Hopefully she got fired for not doing a good job, not for being a woman.

    Seriously, for one this is Kommifornia, I seriously doubt that her termination has anything to do with her gender. If you look at it rationally, if they didn't want a female flying, they wouldn't have hired her in the first place.

    She was calling off work too many days in a row. She was advised to take maternity leave due to her call offs and she refused. She had a baby and kept calling off instead of doing it the right way by filing for maternity leave and baby bonding time.
