    Parity in short: If you put each Tetris piece on a chessboard, it will cover two white and two black squares EXCEPT for the T piece. So if you put all the pieces down, your Ts determine whether you are overfilling white or black squares. So it is ideal to have equal number of T cover 3 black 1 white, and T cover 1 black 3 white. If those get too out of whack with one more than the other too much, it will always be messy and require Ts to fix it. If you are T dependent, you might be forcing the right placement to be bad for parity. (I thought that was shadow T but acually that isn't what it sounds like Jake is calling shadow T, it is instead when a single line clear causes the same imbalance that a T would) Add to this the fact that single or triple line clear means you are exceeding a 9 wide box on specific rows. So the tile you add in column 10 will matter for whether you are making parity in this sense better or worse. That's "how singles affect parity" which was called out at one point. That and the fact that shifting everything down by 1 will change the interpretation of a static checkerboard but whether you care about that or not is up to interpretation.

  • @fuxpremier

    @fuxpremier

    4 жыл бұрын

    A line is ten cells wide, i.e an even number. How can a clear change your parity? Only Ts, real Ts can.

  • @biggiemac42

    @biggiemac42

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@fuxpremier Consider a build with who cares what, tall, in the left 8 columns. 9th column is 4 high. 10th column is ground level. If you get an L and place it rightside up in the right, you burn a single. If you get a T and place it such that you burn a single, it is identical in effect to the L. So the T and the L have identical effects on parity in this example, explained by the fact that the row which burned added its cell in a different color before burning.

  • @biggiemac42

    @biggiemac42

    4 жыл бұрын

    If you wanted to, you could design a piece sequence with no Ts in it, and which allowed you to build up a tall well while burning many singles all on even numbered rows. I think you would have progressively worse parity as this went on, but I might be wrong.

  • @fuxpremier

    @fuxpremier

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@biggiemac42 Ah ok, I see what you mean: when you burn a single (or a triple), you change the parity of the cells above the lines burnt (white cells become black and vice-versa) but not the lines below, so you can effectively change the parity number of your stack without T-pieces because of singles and triples.

    @@borthelcash6046 I wouldn't say 'totally doable'. It takes something away from this huge achievement. We know he can easily clear lines and doubles at ks speed. However, one should factor in (i) the huge physical toll on your hands tapping at this rate for many levels, and (ii) the decreasing chance of getting favorable pieces (which are needed already during the first stages). Things which usually don't affect performances at level 18, and only partially from 19 on.

    @@Julian_orwell While the fatigue and the decreasing chance of getting good pieces are real facts, just by keep on playing you can compenste for both on certain occasions, provided you have the skill set, that is. Joseph is too young and too many records broken just too frequently, His roof is nowhere to be seen yet. I'd say that if he doesn't break any records in a, don't know, let's say 3, 4-year gap (?) he would have reached his peak.

If you imagine a checkered pattern over the screen, parity is the number of dark vs light squares your stack covers. You want to cover the same number of each. If you look at all the pieces, every one except the T will always cover the same number of each. This is why the T is important to parity. The harddrop article on it goes fer more in depth.

    Basically, Parity is a balance of which spaces on your playfield are occupied. Think of it like a checkerboard. Every piece fills two black spaces and two red spaces, except T. If you're not careful with you place your T's, the parity can get very thrown off and your stack will suffer. Jake is saying that if you stack and skim in such a way that you make phantom T pieces in your stack, it had the same effect of hurting your parity.
