FIRST EVENT Pre Badminton | Highs & Lows @ Larkhill BE90

Join us as we finally get out of Eventing at Larkhill BE90, which could potentially be our only run before Badminton in 4 weeks time. It was great to be back out enjoying Evening with my Boy who thoroughly enjoyed himself, but I did sadly make a very costly mistake in the Showjumping, massively affecting our Result.

    The thing I love about you Tina is how much you care which is a curse as well as a blessing. Learn from mistakes and move on wiser. You did great for first time out, especially after last year and on such a windy day. Banks is looking good - such a stud muffin - and isn't Lola a sweetie. Well done Tina, onward and upwards!

    👏👏👏👏 Dressage warm up when he gave you stretching walk on long rein I KNEW you were going to have a beautiful test. And indeed it was. Show jumping… I’ve never hit pause/rewind on video faster. I believe he just didn’t see first element of that double. 🤷‍♂️ but shocked we all were. Now here’s where I’m extremely proud of you… you didn’t let that big shock ruin rest of course. And then you headed straight out to XC probably with some unsure feelings. However… SMASHED that XC…🔥🔥👏👏 the water was amazing… never missed a stride/rhythm (don’t tell Cam I said you rode your water course better than his 🤣 although Cam aced it also but he had a wiggle balancing stride in there😂) 🤫🧡 Your down the step combination was so rhythmic. Well done. You should be pleased with that day. Lola was amazing support and help (so organized 🫡).. great groom fairy 🧚 enjoyed Pilates with Dinks 🧡

    I love your honesty and humor. As a very ignorant hunter/jumper rider-why don’t so many three day event riders have their horses schooled for flying lead changes? Seems like it is time consuming and unbalanced without that piece.

    What level of event rider are you referring to 🤣... I spent 3 years working for a 5* event rider going to events from BE100 up and people not able to do flying lead changes were a minority TBH

    @@user-hk5yt2rl9cI am a hunter/jumper rider in the U.S., and I follow several of the lower level eventers here on KZread, like Tina, Meg, Lucy, and others in their group. I’ve watched Meg Elphick (Elphick Event Ponies) for several years before following some of the other ladies, and I ALWAYS wondered WHY she never taught her ponies/horses flying changes. I’ve never seen any of the others do flying changes in their horses either. So are they just the exception? I can’t imagine trying to jump a course without flying changes…. I do realize that the dressage tests in eventing at this level don’t require flying changes, and their show jumping classes seem to have a very generous T/A, so I guess they don’t care if it costs them extra time to have to do a simple change? But it still takes away from the rhythm and pace of the canter. Also, sometimes there ARE bending lines where they done have time to do a simple change before the next obstacle, so they end up counter cantering in to the second element, and don’t actually get a straight take-off. Not a big deal if it’s a single .90m vertical (“upright” for the Brits), but certainly problematic if you have a double combination, which requires straightness. Idk, it just seems like having a flying change would help prevent pulled rails, time faults, dicey approaches to jumps, etc. I realize that 4 or 5 British eventers don’t represent all of the lower level eventers (not a put down; just a fact that there is a huge difference between a .90 and a 5 star in everything from the MOST obvious- the fence heights-, as well as the level of technical questions posed in all 3 phases. Obviously a BE 90 dressage test isn’t going to require half pass or extended trot, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a triple/aka “treble”combination in a BE 90 OR 100 SJ course. So I don’t mean “lower level” in a pejorative way). I just found it odd that none of the ones I watch have their horses trained to do them.

  • @margauxnodvin7478

    @margauxnodvin7478

    I agree 100%!!! Fellow hunter/jumper rider here. I honestly can’t imagine riding any kind of jumping course without being able to do flying changes! Obviously, if we did simple changes in our hunter courses, we wouldn’t place!😂 (Unless it was a very beginner class). But also, having to come down to the trot to change leads just disrupts the canter rhythm and pace, and makes it impossible to maintain the steady flow we want. I realize show jumping in eventing isn’t done for speed, and their T/A’s are generous enough to allow for simple changes (at least in these lower levels). But again, having to do a simple change is just so disruptive! I’ve also seen situations where they have had some dicey take off spots/jump angles due to say, being on a bending line and not having the space to do a simple change, so they end up coming to the second fence in an awkward counter canter, and often don’t get remotely close to being straight and centered over the second fence. I guess not super important if it’s a .90m vertical, but if you are doing a bending line to a combination, you NEED to be straight and centered!! I know this from firsthand experience - one of my show jumping classes had some technical lines and turns. There was one double combination set about 3-4 strides away from the arena railing on a diagonal. You had to turn off the rail at the EXACT moment to ensure you got in straight to the combination. I started my turn too early, and ended up coming in to the double on a bit too much angle. My mare jumped in beautifully, and -bless her heart- tried to jump the second fence. But I couldn’t get her straight enough during the one stride we had in between, and we ended up almost jumping the left standard on our way out. SMH…. We legit hit it, and took it out, but my angel still tried to jump out…😂. What a mess! Anyway, flying changes seem essential to me, and they usually aren’t difficult to teach most horses. Especially if you’re producing a youngster. So I have been bewildered about the lack of flying changes for years! 😂

    What a good ole windy blustery day. Those bunny hops!!! Wind right up his tail! Can I just say Lola is just the BEST groom? She does amazing camera work too. Followed right along, good commentary voice, low and well modulated. I think those giant wings right up by the fence and spectators just startled Banksy, like Whoa, what’s that thing? Good riding in spite of that one hiccup. Lovely dressage. I thought the wind would be a spook factor, but it didn’t faze him at all. It was good to see Claudie on your vlog, she is an amazing young lady. Maybe a fun vlog collaboration in the future, Team Tina/Claudie vs Team Meg/Harlow? That would blow up the socials!

    Great job Tina and Banksy! Lovely dressage test, and great SJ except for that unfortunate blip! I know that must have been heart breaking, knowing you were on such a good dressage score. 😢. But cheers to you for soldiering on, and tackling the cross country course amazingly! Banksy looks gorgeous, as do you. You’re going to be great at Badders!! I can’t wait! I have to say, as fun as eventing looks, I am grateful that I show Hunter/jumpers. If I mess up a course in a Hunter over fences class, I may not place in that class, and I’ll be out of the running for Champion or Reserve Champion in that division (we usually have 2 jumping classes and one flat class for each division, each division having different fence heights and eligibility requirements). I can just go do another division and potentially be champion in that one. Or I can also compete my show jumper in several different classes. So one “not-great” round doesn’t ruin my entire weekend or week of competition. That’s the nice part. We also compete different horses in the disciplines that suit them well. So my hunter doesn’t also have to excel in show jumping. Occasionally you can find a horse that can do all three styles, but most of them do best in one particular style. So I’m also grateful that I don’t have to train one horse to do three different disciplines equally well. But huge props to all of you eventing riders who do just that! I’d love to try eventing one day. Sadly, I don’t currently have a horse who could do all three phases. I’m also 47, so might be a bit old to get into the eventing world 😅

    Awesome to see you out eventing again, don't worry about the showjump wobble, looking at it I think you're right he struggled to read it as where you approached it there was no ground line for him to read a take off point, but you are willing to own that and not blame him,can't wait for you to get to Badminton amazing horse woman.

    Hi Tina, I love watching your vlogs and love Banks. I don’t know if you noticed but in the showjumping your bridle is over the top of the bit on the right hand side rather than under it. Is you look at 43:15 you can see. Maybe that is why he was a bit more fussy with his head than usual. Even with that he is just an epic pony I hope my baby ISH turns out like him!

    That was a great result. His dressage was epic but I felt the time faults in SJ were a bit harsh. You certainly weren't dawdling and the terrain was not very favorable, so the time limit must have been fast! Anyhow, lovely to see you and Banksy competing again. Roll on Badminton. Lola is wonderful too. ❤

    Whatever you've ben doing, continue doing it🎉🎉The best I've ever sen him in dressage, he's much more active in the rear end. He used to look a bit straight avd stiff in the hocks but that's not there anymore. I think he's aging backwards like Benjamin Button😂❤ So looking forward to Badminton. Also nice to see Cam in action on that lovely grey.

    Great job for a first outing and a broken seal before badders. I'm just a dressage rider but if you made me do 3 phases I could see a benefit in just thinking like a professional, like things happen but I still need to finish this job regardless. IDK it's easy to armchair quarterback! Great recovery, on to the next! I also love Lola's commentary!
