First Edition of Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens
In this video you will see our college's first Edition of Charles Dickens's Little Dorrit (1857)
The students at Massey college gave this edition as a gift to our founding Master, Robertson Davies in 1981 when he retired. After Davies passed away, it was purchased by Jackman who in 2014 re-gifted it to the Fourth Master at the College John Fraser. Fraser generously donated it the book(s) to the library.
Little Dorrit was serialized in 1857 and this is how most people would have come across the works of Charles Dickens in real time.

A NOTE ON THE USE OF THE WORD "MASTER": the Massey college no longer uses the term Master, but "Principal" -- at the time John Fraser and Robertson Davies were principals that was the term used, and the ones on the cards and ex-libris.

I love all the old ads. I also love how the head of the university is called a master. I wish here in the states we called them masters instead of presidents.

We very recently changed the title to "Principal," however I used the word "Master" because that's what Davies and Fraser were called and that's what is written on the card and ex libris. Thank you for watching Paul!
I wonder what was the time gap between one pamphlet and the next? The suspense while waiting for the next instalment would have been keen.

well...Dickens did leave a character hanging off a cliff in one ...inventing the "cliffhanger" concept
