First drive in 27 years - 1969 Volvo 164 Rescue - Ep 5

Another long update on the project 1969 Volvo 164 rescue, now named "Ivy" for its many shades of green. Some steering bits, some electrical bits and a surprise behind the camshaft made for a very busy ten days since the previous episode. And of course the (almost) entire braking system overhaul before heading into the second first start and the first first drive since 1994. Woo!

The isle of Arran in Scotland...a gulf stream located island with tropical plants, and temperatures that lie to the rest of the country....Warm, and mild in winter....vistas across open sea and mountain peaks...A holiday and lived on location in the south west coast....AND...the first timeI ever in a Volvo...a 164...with the rotating dials on the dashboard...the sound of the 6 cylinder engine, Red was the colour....This was back in late 60's early 70's. That was the day I fell in love with Volvo....How is it a boxy vehicle seems to have lines to it that defy normal car design. whatever is being done to the green machine...it's being reborn.....

Your car is the gift that keeps on giving! Lol, I would remove the head, have it reconditioned, install hardened seats, hardened valves. This should solve most of your engine problems.

  • @michaeltutty1540

Since you have to send out the head, new valves are not terribly expensive. New hardened valve seats are a good investment. With a beautiful car like this, going half assed makes no sense. This old girl will be a dream to drive when all is said and done. Keep going with her.

Hey! Try to maintain that mindset you got when you removed the steering column! It wasn't necessary in the end but you learned about the adjusting nut and got to clean and lubricate the part! For example, I'm sure you can think of benefits of removing the top as well. Soon you'll know much more about the state of the engines internals and that's good!

Engine out, take apart everything, replace, maybe grind crank etc. A lot of work but it's rewarding and it's worth it in the end, these cars are rare and it makes sense to get it going again. If you do a lot yourself maybe not that expensive but of course it could be depending on how many new parts are needed. Valves, bearings etc is not expensive on these engines, pistons can possibly be reused with new rings so hopefully...

Dear David Bello. 👍👌👏 At last, another excellent video! Very well done again and as always, Sir! Nevertheless: I feel compassion for you because this great green car isn't so great at all. Ivy seems to be quite unwilling to help you (the contrary what Fury Christine did!). ;-) By the way: Great name! I like it very much, additionally it fits well because ivy can be poisonous, healthy (for instance in cough syrup), fatal and beautiful. Now I know why we had to wait for a new and complete video. It seems that you unfortunately have to fight your way through almost every detail of this oldtimer. That's definitely the opposite of what I wished for you. But I hope respectively I'm pretty sure that you will solve all problems (unless the engine is completely ruined because of the head problems). As always Thanks a lot for making teaching recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards, luck and health to all of you. And an extra portion of patience to you, Sir.

12:10 Yah, those lamp holders are not too great. There are also two versions. One with the contacts that 'wipe' on the inside of the circuit board and the others that wipe on the exterior of the board. Thus they are not interchangeable. Also if the two speedo illumination lamp holders make poor contact they will get hot enough to melt and then not work at all. On my 1970 142S, I've simply bought several and combined the best into one decent instrument panel. One of these days the less great parts will end up as a grab bag on eBay. flic.kr/s/aHsmKgcQXL

I feel bad.... buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut id just JB Weld that hole. For an engine I don't care about because I think it would be better to start with something else, undamaged/better condition, what will it hurt trying the easy fix first? But if it has something worse, like a rod knocking then I personally would just go directly to a different/better example of the engine and focus on making that even better.

This is the real deal of old car resuscitation. Life is short; buy someone else’s sorted money pit for a fraction of their “investment”, and keep it in good shape-this is the only way to really enjoy an old car.

Don't you know that english Carbs NEVER work correctly? You must scrap them, use EFI or Weber or Mikuni and engine Problems are gone forever.
