FIRST DRIVE! Aston Martin Valkyrie: An F1 Car For The Road | Henry Catchpole - The Driver's Seat

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this episode, Henry Catchpole finally gets to drive the incredible Aston Martin Valkyrie. Under the spectacular floodlights of the Sakhir F1 Circuit in Bahrain, we got some answers as to whether this hypercar developed with Red Bull lives up to the promise of being one of the all-time greats. Will future generations mention it in the same breath as the McLaren F1, the Bugatti Veyron and the original supercar, the Lamborghini Miura?
With a 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 producing 1000bhp and revving to 11000rpm it has certainly got an engine that is memorable from outside the car let alone from behind the wheel. But what will 1100kg of downforce feel like? Will it actually feel drivable?
There is also an incredible ride in the track-only AMR Pro version of the Valkyrie, with none other than Formula One driver Nico Hülkenberg. Pulling over 3G around Silverstone is an interesting experience as you can tell from Henry’s face!
It’s fair to say that the development of the Valkyrie hasn’t always been easy and the video also explores what the challenges were and dives into some of the extraordinary stories that surround the car’s gestation. Just how did Adrian Newey’s phenomenally bold aerodynamic design finally make it into production as a full homologated road car? And what have sausage and mash in a pub near Milton Keynes and the Space Shuttle programme got to do with it?
We hope you enjoy the film. Let us know in the comments where we should take the Valkyrie when we get to drive it on the road.

Thank you so much for all the fabulous comments. It's enormously appreciated. We really wanted to do the Valkyrie justice, so I'm glad that has come across in the film. As ever, a huge shout out to Glenn Winhall for all his work behind the scenes on this. And if you want one more fun fact about the car (there are so many but I'll pick just one, for now), the hydraulics for the active suspension use a pump from an AH-64 Apache helicopter...

I was fortunate to be sitting next to Henry on the train into London last week and couldn’t help notice he was working on the edit for this video. I clocked him on the platform, gave him and smile and a nod and kept myself to myself. Once we’d got off the train, I couldn’t help tell him I didn’t want to come across as a fan boy but that his work was absolutely brilliant and it was evident to see how much hard work goes into making amazing content. Editing at 7:30am is testament to that! Unassuming, humble, I dare say not fully aware of the impact his content makes on petrolheads. Henry, you’re an asset to motoring journalism, keep up the amazing work, I’ll follow wherever you go (not literally!!😂) 👊🏻

Yep, and the fact a car with such a low production run has to meet emissions is ridiculous. They probably burned more fuel trying to develop a motor and emission equipment to meet the standards than these will collectively burn in their lifetimes! If the production run of a car is less than 5000 units a year they should just be able to run free. Like you wouldn't put a methane catcher on a horse! Chances are most all will only see a handful of km a year anyway.

I remember when Jeremy Clarkson did his emotional piece on the Aston Martin V10 vantage back in the early 2000s, marking what he considered a farewell to the HyperCars and supercars that would be impossible due to new environmental regulations, and the 08 recession which seemed to drive such eccentric luxury performance vehicles to something we’d talk about in automotive history, but never get to live through again. The Valkyrie, however, and many other cars that have come out recently, have demonstrated that the engineers at Toyota, Mercedes, Porsche, and etc. still have on last dying gasp left before we are all forced to drive self-driving EVs.

THANK YOU HENRY... with every lap you could feel he is begining to feel more comf. And pushing it, enjoying it more and more. What a job, 23 min isnt enough!

Beautiful film. Catchpole at his most engaging. A true enthusiast talking with genuine interest in the engineering and talent that has been poured into this incredible machine. This was an absolute gem of a short film to watch. There really is only one true driver making films (with an extremely talented team) of this quality and depth left on KZread. This could have been a documentary in its own right. Take a bow Catchpole, peerless journalism.

Amazing car, and good looking too, and wonderful video. Sadly the question "Will I be capable of driving it?" that Henry had at the beginning is largely irrelevant, as the road going versions of these will never see any miles. I did find it amusing that if you get injured in a head-on crash then the first aid kit that might be helpful is in the part of the car that's now crushed!

It's a road car like a CLK GTR or 911 GT1 are road cars lol. Hey look at your luggage space, you can fit at least two toothbrushes in the front. Front clearance? Just hope nobody spat their chewing gum onto the road at the end of your driveway, because you won't get over it. We all know they're going to sit in a private collection and with the greatest luck perhaps be trailered to a show and a circuit demo every five years.
