First Damascus Steel From Scratch! No power tools or welding

Ойын-сауық

This is my first upload in many years, big shift in content.
As England went into its first lockdown I took up a new hobby that's been on my mind for many years. Inspired by Alec Steele and PrinceWorksForge via Instagram and many other various channels which involved DIY projects, I decided to start blacksmithing myself.
I was lucky enough to find some vintage tools not too far from where I live, like the anvil featured in my video which I had obtained a year prior, and decided I'd jump straight into the deep end with no experience to see if someone like me could manage to muster up something useful.
The very, very delayed gratification was worth it!
I gathered my tools along the way as I did the project, resulting in many delays to finishing it, as well as running into issues which demotivated me to continue at one point.
I hope you enjoyed the video, let me know of any improvements!

An old blacksmith told me onetime “a knife maker don’t make mistakes , they just make smaller knives “ /lol . Way to power thru the mistakes pal , great looking blade in the end . The 1st thing I tried to forge weld was some well used winch cable off of a skidder , after a lot of swearing & cussing I finally got it .

never thought of that, "just make smaller knives", certainly a positive way of looking at it! I'm in process of making chainsaw damascus and so far not great but ill get something!

Awesome work....when you are forge welding light and rapid taps all over, big swings will leave cracks ect. And always work at a forging temp on it just to further reduce the chance of a crack :)

Yeah I believe for my second stack I didn't have the proper temperature, so when I hit it it actually jolted up for a second which you can see in the vid at 1:21. Slow vid down, the back end comes up

Old lady beginner here - Thanks for working in full sun! I am a garage smith who has to work outside, and my metal never looks hot enough to forge weld. Seeing yours, well that is my working temp also. It looks different from indoor smithing. I would have tried a twist, but likely would have introduced many cold shuts. Great effort, never give up!

Just something your accident caused me to dream up: thick leather guards that strapped on one’s lower legs and splayed across the top of the boot. Couple them with a proper apron, of course, don’t want any cinders popping between the greave and your knee!😳

  • @Fragility098

    @Fragility098

    10 ай бұрын

I used simple stainless steel wire that you can get from any gardening shop :) wrapped it around the stack with pliers. It comes off after the first few hits but by then the welds should be set enough to hold itself

  • @Fragility098

I used some thin stainless steel wire to wrap around the billet. They break off normally after the first heat so you better make sure you get that forge weld in on the first few taps!

Fake damascus - the layers are stacked instead of folding them. "Damascus blade no Powertools" failed at first second by using Angle grinder
