First Class OVERNIGHT on an Australian Sleeper Train

Today we are riding first class on Australia's Overnight Sleeper Train from Sydney to Melbourne as we take a first hand view of what its like inside the train and I give you an honest review of my experience.
This train is owned by NSWtrainlink and is the only public (government) train that runs from sydney to melbourne, as part of the XPT train line. I took the overnight train option but you also have the option to take the sydney to melbourne day trip without a sleeper cabin
This sleeper cabin (sleeper berth) usually holds 2 people per cabin, as there are two beds per cabin, however due to global sickness rules, only 1 person is allowed in each cabin.
Make sure to turn on subtitles to get my thoughts and honest review of this train ride

I used to catch this train quite regularly, but never in sleeper carriage, usually in the disabled section of C carriage. Not a bad trip. I'm not fussed on the menus, so I normally get my dinner at one of the cafes outside the station (down the escalator from the concourse).(done that more times than I can remember on both the Melbourne & Canberra services)..

Many times. In UK, USA and this service in Australia. My single compartment was significantly better than yours (and that journey was done in September 1987); I had an excellent dinner and breakfast and a very comfortable sleep. Three days on the California Zephyr - Chicago to San Francisco - was am absolute treat - amazing views, lots of interesting fellow traveller's and absolutely amazing staff. London to various destinations in UK was always comfortable.

One thing I noticed that this 'high speed train' was never doing any high speeds. Considering the cost of this sleeper cab and then seeing all that's lacking and the 'school camp' food no wonder why people fly SYD-MLB. Sadly this train is trapped in the past like much of Australia. In the UK this class of train are now Museum pieces. But here is Lucky Australia this is 'premium high speed train tech'. I loved the gloves, gave the video a really creepy serial killer feel. Your going to the top of the charts once you connect to the correct KZreadrs 😳

I have not taken a day sitter for either the Melbourne or Brisbane overnight trips so I don’t have a perfect opinion on this, however for me I would much prefer to pay the extra $88 to upgrade (from first class train pass) to a sleeper. I’ve done the 7hr Dubbo to Sydney on an first class seat and I couldnt imagine having a comfortable sleep on an 11hr trip

Your subtitles were excellent! Like others, I didn't like the gloves, nor the dizzy swivel shots. Maybe you could practise at home. I've made the same mistake.. There are other nice sleeper videos, for comparison those in Sweden/Germany/Norway/ and the Turkey to Austria. Just pacing it out a bit helps the audience relax. If you can, check out others just to up your standard a bit. I do think the toilet, shower, curtains etc are a bit below the standard of the others I've seen. Good first try (YOU said it!) and hoping you get in some practice before going west and north. Cheers

The power cars are Diesel - Electric, based on the BR Class 43 (Intercity 125 HST). Redesigned and built by COMENG for Australian conditions. Later trains were built by ABB when COMENG went out of business. Carriages are based on a Budd design, built in Australia. You can checkout `XPT by COMENG' here on KZread if interested (3 videos).

I am not very impressed at all by this train. The compartment itself looks acceptable but that is just about the only good thing I can really say about it. The majority of passengers will not be travelling in the very small number of sleeper compartments that this train offers. The seated accommodation is not up to what was provided on the UK Inter City 125 version of this train, especially the 1st class 2 X 2 seating when in the UK (and if I am not mistaken in the original Australian configuration) the 1st class seating was 1 X 2. 2 X 2 1st class especially on a long overnight journey is not acceptable at all. The whole train interior looks a bit dilapidated to me. The catering was very unimpressive as well. If I heard the announcement correctly, 2 out of the 4 options for dinner were Roast Pork. How odd. Have a look at one of the videos of the Caledonian sleeper in the UK which covers a similar distance and compare. It would be nice for Sydney and Melbourne to be linked again by a quality (overnight) rail service as this offering will never attract high yield or business travellers. I have never travelled on an Australian sleeper train although I would like to try the Indian Pacific one day. The only long distance rail journey I have made during a visit to Australia was Sydney - Canberra in 1978 on the old Canberra Monaro Express. Too long ago to remember much. Can remember a nice freshly cooked steak dinner served at my seat though and seeing Kangaroos out of the window!
