where do you activate it exactly?
Most overlooked in my opinion is turning on hot corners and adding mission control (system preferences > desktop and screensaver). Then you can add multiple desktops at the top of the window as if you had additional monitors. You can then 3 finger swipe back and forth between them.... Keeps me from having to minimize every screen when I need to find a particular window.

Great list! I love starting fresh. When I setup a new computer I rarely add everything I had on the old computer. I only add or install it when I actually need it. That way I don't bog it up! One thing I always add immediately is Size Up.

@@iMaram. yes. Specially cuz I have other apple products and they work perfectly together. So much easier, so much portable. I don’t think I’m going back to PC.
I always enable drag with three fingers on the trackpad. It used to be in the Trackpad Settings but a few years ago it switched to the Accessibility Settings. It's so much more convenient to move windows and other things around with three fingers on the trackpad than clicking with one finger and dragging with another finger.
I like to turn on the option that shows file extensions in Finder. Magnification for the dock is crucial, can't work without it.
THIS WAS SO USEFUL! I learned a lot and I've been using mac since 2015 lol
It's not just tap to click that is essential for an awesome experience with simple dragging... You also have to go into Accessibility and check off these two things (it's night and day with dragging and making the trackpad super awesome). Check Enable Dragging "without drag lock" and also choose Scrolling "with inertia" under Accessibility. These things make a world of difference and I'm not sure why they are buried in Accessibility. It makes dragging windows effortlessly and pleasant. I can't stand it any other way.

I would advise against this if you use tap to click, because it introduces a very noticeable delay to the click. Your MacBook waits for a split-second to see if you'll tap again, thus delaying the click. Instead you could use three finger dragging which doesn't have the same issue.

About to get my first Mac so this was really helpful!
Just got a new 16" Macbook Pro yesterday after using a 2011 Mac Mini for the past decade!! This video has been super helpful and I can't believe it was actually uploaded today!! THANK YOU!!
Right off the bat first thing in this video - the behavior you’re describing of macos intelligently moving files to the cloud is a SEPARATE setting that can be independently toggled off in the iCloud Drive settings without disabling the document sync feature. So if that’s bugging you just switch off optimize storage and keep it syncing! It’s super useful!
@sergiosala
4 жыл бұрын
Exactly! I love iCloud Drive and use it instead of Dropbox now.
Alfred, it’s a beefed up spotlight and you can have a lot of custom actions setup there. Dropbox for my cloud storage. For web development Atom (been buggy lately, might swing to VS Code), Local (Wordpress dev environment), and iTerm2 which i customize and theme put with Oh My Zsh. I do all my writing as Markdown files, and I use Typora for that.
This video was really helpful. plus, I must say that your video quality and the overall presentation made this video 10 times beautiful. Subscribed.
One of the first things I enable is three finger drag to move windows with a trackpad. The three-finger drag option is hidden in System Preferences > Accessibility. Click the Trackpad Options button at the bottom of the Accessibility window on Pointer Control. In the pop-up window, check the box for Enable dragging and choose three finger drag from the pull-down menu.
This was great Tyler, thanks for putting this all together. I get my new MacBook Pro today and will definitely be using these tips 👍🏻
Ask to keep changes when closing documents. It is in the same screen as the scroll bar settings.
Just got my first mac. Did almost all of these within the first minutes. Then watched this video. ^^

More of these videos Tyler. These are awesome. Just cleaned up my Mac and looks so much better.
One of the first things I change is adding 3 finger drag in the accessibility options. I also move all the apps that I don't use in launchpad into one folder :)
That was a very useful video! I’ve just received my first ever Mac, the late 2020 MacBook Pro M1. It’s great! But I only now realise that I have to much to learn, having come from Windows. One of the first things I wanted to download was Final Cut Pro - until I saw the price tag!! I also couldn’t find Adobe Photoshop on the Mac AppStore which I thought was odd.
Very helpful tips, even for someone who has owned their Mac for about a year. Thank you!
I don’t even use a Mac but always enjoy watching your videos man. Good stuff!
Shift is my first mac app install. I can have all my emails, Google apps, Dropbox, Slack and Trello all in one place without ever having to open up another app. It’s life changing.
I always set up my dock with folders! Learned that a long time ago and It is just how Im used to it now. Especially drag the applications folder to the dock, make sure to use list as the setting. Easy access to all applications! Im big into folder management, making hierarchies in the file system. I like to keep things organised and never got into the habit of searching for stuff… Even though it might be quicker I feel more in control when I have stuff visually organised.

...your video setup is flawless. Best video quality I’ve seen on KZread. Had to revamp my entire setup after seeing this.🤘📸👌
Quarantine KZread recommended this to me even though I’m using Asus, but now I’m saving for the new MacBook next year, and I’ll come back to watch this video once again.
Its crazy, you Mac is pretty much set up exactly like mines lol except for the dock placement, I put mines on the left
I have been copying and evolving my .bashrc file for over 25 years now, along with a small bag of useful shell scripts. It's in the top 5 things I copy over to any new computer. Blender, VLC, and XCode are the first few apps I will install. Lately Darkroom and Affinity share my attention for raw image processing.
One thing I do beside (most) of these things you showed is activating right bottom hot corner for screen standby. I use this very often to turn off the screen with a swipe.
I hate the trackpad clicks. I’d turn it off. I hate that. Also I’d turn on three finger moving windows

Thanks for this video! I want to acknowledge some people’s first Macs may not be from Apple and are purchased secondhand. I don’t recommend the first thing they do is download updates. Some older Macs-which will work great for some users-may have a recommendation to update to the next OS and the computer works better sticking with the previous. In those instances, it’s helpful to do a little internet research on what users are saying before updating.

Thank you for the scroll bar tip. I've just updated from my 2011 Macbook Pro (so used to a very old Mac!) and the missing scrollbars were driving me nuts! And the trackpad click tip - also so useful!
Thanks Tyler, great tips. I have done 95% of your tips already and you gave me comfort of other like minded and organised mac users :-) One other thing I tend to do is set the views of all the folders on my drives (cloud & local). View > CMD+J > Always open in List View & Browse in list view, Arrange by : Modified, Sort by : Added, Then tick all the check boxes, Click Use as default. Reason i do this is that when you see your files, these are always shown by date accessed and you never loose the file and stop thinking "when did i make this file" or "Where did i store this file". :-)
New mac user here so.. thank you for the video! Also at 04:05, I see that you have CaptureOne, Luminar and other other non-adobe software. Can you made a video on what you would recommend from these? Thanks!
I like your ideas about the dock... I have a 2018 13in MacBook Pro and I didn’t realize how big and how much space my doc was taking up
I have used Mac for years and most of these tips were new to me and very useful. Thanks!
I have been using Windows since 3.1 for my work as a CPA, and I have decided to finally move entirely to the Apple ecosystem. I am finding the transition to be really stressful, because the Mac “desktop” experience has been utterly different....I have used my Windows desktop as a temporary holding place for decades, and I couldn’t figure the Mac out...until I realised from your video this morning the iCloud WAS the desktop......just want to say that you for your video Tyler, the young new world just assumes everyone understands how to drive these machines, and there are so many nuances to Apple that making the transition for a older professional guy like me is really nerve-racking trying to cover every issue which crops up in a professional’s filing system (and old habits)
One thing I like about macos is Hot Corners. The lower right corner reveals the desktop (Windows' only feature I really miss, hence the placement), the upper left activates Application Windows.
@stalman
4 жыл бұрын
I used to LOVE hot corners before Control Center, now gestures have replaced it for me
Great tips, agree with all and thanks for the show scroll bars, didn’t know that one. Other things I change is mouse/trackpad speed to max and screen resolution to more space
The macOS app TextSniper has been added to my list of must-have apps. So far this is my top app of the year. Now I can instantly copy any text from my Mac's screen and it is super useful. I recommend to try it.
This is (a) gold and (b) perfect timing as I've just ordered a new MacBook Pro :-) Thanks Tyler!!
Sitting here and watching videos of macbboks in anticipation of mine finally arriving. Thanks to Corona that´ll take a wile.
Currently waiting for my 1st Mac in 20+ years so this was fantastic 😁
I always create a folder on the desktop called 'Tidy' then at the end of each day I drag anything left on the desktop into the Tidy folder and then periodically go through it. Better still, I use Hazel to do this all for me automatically. As I don't show any system icons on the desktop (like drives etc.) this keeps the desktop nice and clear.
There's an app that increases my magic mouse sensitivity. The iMac screen is too big for the max sensitivity that apple has set. It also lets you make custom gestures for different apps (and custom universal gestures). Really can't remember what it's called (my iMac has been sent back as it was faulty) Comments about safari were interesting, I might look into using it more often
Literally the first thing I do after disabling iCloud sync is installing iTerm and homebrew :)
