8:10 Wrap-Up
A mattress’s firmness is determined by its construction, comfort layer thickness, and the bodyweight of the owner. For instance, innerspring mattresses with a thin comfort layer are usually going to be softer than a memory foam mattress with a thick comfort layer. Also, heavier people might find a mattress to be firmer or softer than a lighter person.
#firmmattresses are usually a better match for stomach sleepers and some back sleepers because they are so supportive. They should also work better for hot sleepers and those who like to sleep on top of their mattress.
#softmattresses are going to work for side sleepers and those who prefer to sink into their mattress. They are also a better mattress for couples.

I prefer firm mattresses, always have. If I sleep on a soft mattress, I wake up with an aching back. However, at some point, firm can be too firm. I slept on an old flippable mattress that was in great shape, and it was too firm, but it was labeled as extra firm. I despise the sensation of memory foam--like sleeping in quick sand.

How are you feeling after an year since you posted this comment? The firmness could be because the mattress was new, and it needed a breaking period, and your body to get used to it. This usually takes couple of weeks to a month.

I am mostly a side sleeper, but end up in every position throughout the night. I wake up about every 30 minutes to an hour to change positions. For reference, I am petite (115 pounds), sleep alone, and am hot natured. have had 2 major shoulder surgeries, but I prefer to sleep on my side which is painful. Throughout my journey, I have tried a Stearns and Foster (too hot and too much cradling/sinking) vispring elite (also too hot and uncomfortable), and currently I am on my trial period for the new purple restore premier firm. My main issue is that everything I try sleeps hot. The other issue is that once I get a new mattress, it feels incredibly comfortable. After a few days go by and the mattress begins to “break in” and the initial cushioning goes down, I am in excruciating pain. The purple mattress I currently have has been the only thing I have tried that doesn’t have me burning up after an hour, but while lying on my back it is too soft from my hips sinking, and on my side my shoulders do not sink enough and I wake up often to change positions. Every morning my body feels all out of wack. If I sleep on my back, I need a medium firm mattress, and if I’m on my side, I need a softer mattress. I do not like memory foam due to sleeping hot, and I prefer to be on vs in the mattress. I haven’t had a good nights sleep in years, and could really use some advice on where to go from here.

I’m feeling overwhelmed trying to find the best bed/softness level. I’m 5’6”, 140. I prefer sleeping on my stomach, sometimes side, and sleep very hot. My issue is I prefer softer beds but have to be careful with back pain when too soft, and shoulder pain when too firm. I think I’m looking for a 5.5-6.0 hybrid bed, but not sure. Can you recommend a mattress for me?

PLEASE HELP : I have back, neck, and hip pain. I’m a combo sleeper, but mainly back and side. I weigh about 140 pounds. I do share a bed, but the motion transfer is the least of my concerns. I don’t even care about budget anymore. My pain is getting so much worse as my mattress ages and it is too firm (firm mattress). I’m not even sure if you’ll see this, but I really need help. I’ve been trying for so long to find a mattress for me. I’ve watched practically every one of your videos, read various articles about the “best” mattresses, etc., and everything’s just confusing me more. Thank you!

Thank you so much for making this video! But now I feel like I'm more confused with what mattress I want. for the most part I'm a stomach sleeper but I wonder if it's because my mattress is uncomfortable. I like the idea of having a soft mattress though because I wonder if it'll help the amount of tossing and turning I do. I always wake up at least twice throughout the night.

    1. I have a bad back 2. I'm mostly a stomach sleeper (I try to side-sleep but usually wake up on my stomach) 3. I toss and turn quite a bit Not sure if I should: Buy a soft mattress to sink into, to help stop myself from tossing/turning/stomach sleeping, or Buy a firm mattress so that I can sleep comfortably with my current habits Any advice, anyone? Hello! If you mostly sleep on your stomach, you're going to want a firm mattress to give you the support you need. If you get a soft mattress, that back pain could get even worse.

I am a 68 yr old woman around 180 lbs. with hip and shoulder pain. I had a pillow top and loved it until 3 months after buying it, it began to sag. Now I am looking at a Beautyrest black CX medium firm and Beautyrest CX plush. I can’t make up my mind as I heard plush mattresses sag quicker than medium firm, what do you suggest? Thankyou!

Hmm so im 105kg, i Just tested a bed that feels perfect. But It is on the softer side. Im a side sleeper so it felt good. But when i lay on a more firm bed, i can feel my chest being stretched in a proper stance. Like chest /back and back you can feel them crack a bit and sit aligned. So firmer should be better for when i lay on my back?? And on my side the softer? Hard to choose what to do :o since I do move around. But firmer also feels like lumbar pressure is removed better

Soft mattress really isn't good for you. It ruins your body's posture and can create problems like back pain and so on.. It's better with a firm mattress or medium-firm and then just have a good softer top that removes pressure. There just isn't any good support with soft mattress.
