Firewood Splitting Trick Never Before Seen on YouTube!

Ойын-сауық

Hi this video is about a method I use to split large rounds vertically with ease! I have yet to see something like this so maybe it will help someone make wood splitting like this easier! Have a good day! I use my County Line 24 Ton hydraulic log splitter to process firewood quick and easy. Log Splitting is one of my favorite things to do and this method makes splitting firewood that much more easy!

    Love it! Got the original, saw how small it was, returned it for the XL. It splits my ~7x16" firewood into smallwood and kindling in a flash. kzread.infoUgkxSRemO77LrM90rx_It_Wh6ZnKAS0H2A8t Good for debarking too. It's so fun I now have too much kindling and have to fight the urge to split the big pieces. I usually split dried cedar, but I've split dried oak too. The edge on mine has stayed razor sharp. I mounted it on a couple pieces of pressure treated 4x4 to hold it steady and quiet the ringing. Several reviews and videos show people having trouble keeping the wood straight. How do I put this gently?... You have to be smarter than the wood. Don't try to split knots, or badly curved grain. And hold the wood (with leather gloves) and tap it once to set it on the blade before giving it a good whack. And you have to know how to swing a hammer. If you don't know what wood grain or knots are, and you can't swing a hammer without hitting yourself or things around you, I suggest buying firewood and kindling pre-split. But if you're smarter than a log, this beautiful tool will make splitting firewood into kindling safer, faster and way more funner! I highly recommend it, and get the XL.

    OK, not bad. But I promise you the 100% best way to do this especially with really big rounds, like 2 feet plus in diameter is 3 to 5 pieces 3 feet long of 1.5” PVC placed on the ground perpendicular to the wedge. You do have to reposition them every once in a while but it gives you a rolling affect and the piece moves effortlessly. Plus, you can also slide it left or right because there’s not a lot of friction.

    This looks like a great idea for using this vertically. I myself use to do it a little different back when I had a splitter like this... On rounds up to 20-24” dia. I raise splitter to vertical position and put the round on the base plate. Next I run the wedge down till it just pinches the wood, then I pull the splitter back horizontal...(poor mans log lift). I also had catch trays on both sides of the beam. Sometimes the rounds were just tooo big and I ended up doing them like this or at least breaking them in half and then flipping one half up at a time.

    Really good idea! I'm a 5'4', 65-1/2 year old widow woman who has been cutting her own firewood (and some for others) for the past 26 years. I did not get my beloved 22Ton log splitter until 11 years ago. I cut 22" long rounds from trees ranging to 140 years old and are +/- 24" in diameter. First, I chock both splitter wheels front and back even when hitched to my truck. Then I raise the splitter to slightly less than vertical with the rear edge of the foot plate embedding into hard ground and the front edge about 1-1/2" to 2" max from touching ground under which I place a piece of board or flat rock. The slight back lean of the cradle helps hold the round in place and the weight of the round firmly plants the foot plate in place. For a B-Day present a few years ago, the foreman for the 740 acre ranch where I cut my wood welded 3 horse shoes on the foot plate, 1 on each side of the plate for vertical splitting support of large rounds. He also welded a 3-1/2' long 1/4" diameter conduit pipe (which he painted fluorescent orange) to either side of my splitter near the wheels and inserted a small American Flag in each pipe. This so I can see easily the movement of my splitter when backing it around by watching the conduit pipes.

  • @HomesteadJay

    Wow thank you so much for taking the time to explain your splitting history and God bless you for you being a strong independent woman! Thank you SO much for the feedback that makes perfect sense to angle the splitter so gravity can help hold the logs, I am always open to new feedback and ideas and this one is one I will remember! I am young to splitting wood compared to the time you have spent and always want to learn! The horseshoe idea is awesome and I am sure it looks cool too! It would serve as a good conversation piece as well. A 740 acre farm is CRAZY! I am sure there is a lifetime of timber ripe for the harvesting! I do like the markers for moving around, especially cause they are AMERICAN flags! I only moved my splitter round the yard with the four wheeler but if I ever towed it locally to areas I'm working I would consider adding markers! God Bless you and thank you for stoping by and sharing your story. Please follow my channel I would love to have you as a follower!

    Homestead Jay ... You're so kind; I do get rather long winded, sorry. ☺️ Yes, except for the extremely long & large rattlesnakes, this baby ranch is a beautiful place which wraps around 3 sides of Sugarloaf Mountain. Baby because the owner's 2 main ranches are in TX., the largest near 10,000. acres. The markers have most definitely been a frustration saver. Being short, I couldn't see my splitter unless it was in side mirrors when splitter was going sideways. The flags are because the foreman and myself, my late husband too, are old Army Retired. His son and one of mine both are in the Army, each with 24 yrs. in so far. Yep, the horseshoes definitely sparked a few comments. Shoes make for good hanging hooks when horizontal. When I leave my splitter on site, I leave my chain, come-a-long, tool bag, cap, etc. hanging on the shoes then, tarp over all. That way all I tote is chainsaws, gas and oil on days I need to take them and can drive my car to the ranch giving the old pickup a break. I love going out and cutting wood. I do like your platform idea and will borrow it, please, with one modification. Rather than fitting only around foot plate, I'll fit the platform flush around with a lip that fits under just the foot plate about 2-3", 1 by thick graduating to level with outer edge of plate (think wedge) to maintain the little bit of cradle back lean. I'll have to add beneath outer most of platform to level with ground. Thank you so much for sharing your invention. I'm certain all who cut wood and see your video will happily put your platform to good use. Hoping you have a wonderful and Blessed Day. Be careful out there.

    That's great, when I built my splitter I had never seen a lift table. All I needed was 1 more control. I sat in my living room on the floor and designed the lift table using cardboard. I made the mounts welded them on and installed the lift. I stand up to split all my wood I don't pick up heavy logs . The lift has loaded 1000 lb logs 24" long 52" dia. I split by myself, not that big all the time but it will. All I need is someone to roll the blocks onto the lift. I control the lift and the wedge. I'm to old now so it's for sell. I enjoyed building it and using it. I guess I'm stupid, I enjoy working.

    Good tip. Maybe make the platform one board wider on each side so split pieces can't fall down to ground level? Every inch you have to lift and carry wood is wear and tear on your back. Also, arrange your process so that the raw rounds, splitter, and finished stack are in sequence and in close proximity to each other. Every inch you have to move wood costs your back.

  • @HomesteadJay

    @HomesteadJay

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes! 100% I rushed to get this pile of wood home before the winter season so yes I paid the price by moving it more than I wanted. Normally I drop the logs right outside the shed they are going into so I don't have to move super far! I couldn't agree more with you and every inch matters! Please follow along on the homestead journey!
