Nice video and cute family! Now I have an excuse for not owning a big Silky saw. I always get a bit annoyed at working on muddy ground because the mud gets all over the wood and the grit is hard on the cutting edge. Not a big deal but still it bothers me.

I think Glen’s advice to put sleeper logs down first will helt a lot, but if it’s too muddy nothing is much fun anymore. Reminds me of when I dug up the stony ground to put up the greenhouse in february 2020. I’m not exaggeratin when I say I had almost 2” of mud stuck under my boots some days … nothing helps in that kind of situation. And I would probably not take the axes out at all under those circumstanses. Oh, and Silky also make smaller saws that are also good, just to ruin your excuse a bit … but I guess you just meant the larger ones.

This would be a great vid for Axe Cordwood Challenge group. !! IMHO, it is at the heart of what Steve Edholm advocated !! You are getting excellent service out of your Calabria ! How did the edge hold up ? Excellent video !!! I really enjoyed it !

Thanks a lot, Glen! I didn’t post any link to the video in the cordwood challenge group since I didn’t think specifically about that when I shot it. But maybe I should listen to what Steven said about it when he started it, if you have a link to any video like that I’d appreciate it, there are quite a few videos on his channel now … The edge on the Calabria held up pretty good, although I have to confess I did shoot this over two days, and I filed it after the first day since I didn’t think it cut that well. But I don’t know what kind of bevel I have on it, since I don’t own a bevel gague yet. But I have irdered one and it’s in transit right now. One thing I can say about it though: I put a larger angle on the toe, to help it endure contact with the ground a bit better.

I might take you up on that advice. Saw your latest uploads. That Aspen splits without you putting a crack in it? And dry enough to burn straight away? I have to try that aswell.

@@myoutdoorways These Aspen that I'm chopping are Hard frozen . Today's , Sunday March 17. One tree challenge sled load. I put a split blow in the end of each round as part of the bucksplit. So really, I was mostly employing the Nouvelle Technique. And I was using my China Tui. 4 lb 14 oz. , Racer, practice, work axe. Very fast and efficent. Tho many of my axes are not convex cheeked, they tend to be fairly thicker in the blade than most Rinaldi axes I've seen . Some of the concave ones have a raised centerline. As soon as I get my Trento I will be giving it a serious workout to ascertain it's abilities.

Please be careful when climbing to take down your taller cherry tree. Leave the axe on the ground , it's a job for the Big Boy ! If you have a pair of Strong , stiff boots, your feet will appreciat having them on if you are climbing without spurs. Do you have a saddle and lifeline/climbing rope ?

I was thinking that I’d use the saw if I get up there. I have no climbing gear, just a ladder. Maybe I’ll just go as far up as I can and put a line there, so I can pull the tree away from the greenhouse. Then I won’t have to climb that high. Whatever I do I don’t want to put myself or the greenhouse in too much jeopardy.

I think the cheekier axes in fact are better for that technique. I’m going to try that myself, but I don’t have any axe like that as big as yours, maybe I need to get one.
