Thanks for the inspiration. We’re in our first year of turning our hobby into a side hustle. I am fortunate to work for a tree service, so overhead is low and sourcing is usually not a problem. Curious how you keep track of all your customers info (order history, species preference, wood stove vs fire pit, etc.). Currently using a word doc but can see some organization limitations with that as time goes on. Your ~10 yrs my senior and many days I’m too tuckered to keep my head up at the table, appreciate your energy and attitude!

Good info about the fees. I'm in the City, so I buy my wood cut and split from other Commercial Operations, loaded by them by bucket. I mostly deliver to people that don't own pickup trucks, with a 6x12x3 trailer, 2 cord capacity with a half cord minimum. I sell to my customers at the same price I pay for it at the wood lots, with a $75 delivery fee within the 15 mile by 12 mile Metro area. It usually takes 2 hours a load, so that's only $37.50 an hour for truck, trailer, and driver. I do not stack, just dump the load because I'm partially disabled from a Stroke, and I tell the customers that right up front. Deliver to surrounding towns in the immediate area is $100, to towns 40-50 miles out is $150 and to outlying towns out in the mountains it is $250 and up. My question is; how do you accept payment? Cash only? Checks? Around here in the City about one in 15 checks will bounce. It takes awhile to chase down the cash, and my bank charges ME for the other person's bounce, which I may or may not get back. I'm thinking of going to a Cash only policy, or maybe a modern internet type pay like Cashapp of Venmo. What do you think?

Hi Chris, Sage advice as usual. The people who buy firewood don't, I'm sure, work for free, so shouldn't expect you to either. Producing high quality firewood is time consuming, hard work and takes time. It's the most sustainable fuel there is and should be valued as such.
@InTheWoodyard

I charge for my time @ 60$h for truck and trailer 20$ for driver 40$ for fuel, truck and trailer the amount of wood ordered does not change the rates. I add extra 25$ if i have to deliver to a camp ground for the extra grief. I tell the customers that i will deliver wherever they want as long as they pay$$$ My highest delivery fee to date was 350$ on a 2 cord order that I took 70 miles into the bush!

As usual, most people have no clue what goes into making a product. I've found most people who have never worked a manual labor job are the ones who question prices. I wish our area wasn't flooded with "Sixpack Sam's" or "Chuck's with a truck". I see prices for a full cord of wood go for 180-225 WITH DELIVERY!

Loading, unloading, and stacking is the work. Driving a load is recovery time. If I had to deliver across the street, it would still be reasonable to charge for loading/unloading. For me, $2 a loaded mile is fair. If you were driving at 50 mph, that would be $100 per hour. How much do we need to 'live the dream'. Most of us would prob do it for free if there was a law against charging for firewood!
