Fireside Chat: how the gaming media shut down Arkane & Tango Gameworks

Ойындар

Phil is an impressionable executive who executed on delivering the directives from the gaming media and personalities. Then, because these projects were not the ones that gamers wanted, gamers didn't support nor play them. Then, Microsoft did what any corporation would do, and killed the parts of the business that were not performing. Then, the media blames Phil Spenceasy (or everyone but him, as is their wont). This is disingenuous. Let's talk about it.

This is due to people being more concerned with how the company looks and if the truth makes a company look bad, they lie to themselves.

Demon's Souls remake and Dead Space remake were amazing.. unlikely I would have played them on the original consoles. Slapped down full price for both at launch - amazing value.

Jez from Gaming Grindhouse had a video about a month ago talking about game output during the 360 era when uncle Phil started running the game division. I’m not sure what his title was exactly. The first years of the 360, they had like 14-18 exclusive games a year. After Phil took over , it dropped to like 3-4 exclusives a year. Phil just double downed on the same games , Halo, Gears, Forza. Great video btw. I laughed when all these people were complaining there wasn’t a proper fallout 4 remaster/remake. I thought those were bad? Maybe only when Sony does it.

Another great video. I do think that many devs today are totally out of touch and instead put their own passion project ideals at the forefront. That’s being said, they did know what gamers wanted when they presented Halo and Hellblade 2 for the first time. It might have been smoke and mirrors at the end of the day, but at least it indicated that they knew what we wanted. It seems that they know what we want but are choosing their wants over the gamers and they are rightfully paying the price for it.

especially when you have the media bigging you up for nothing. You make a niche game like Hi-fi rush and they pretend that it's somehow the saviour of gaming. Bah. Liars.

I can't lie, I did really like Concrete Genie and I was very sad to see Pixel Opus close. But I also recognize that this is a business, and if games aren't selling, they won't keep them open like some sort of charity. Which is also why it annoys me so much to see people pretend to be sad that they were closed, or Japan Studio was closed, or that Guerrilla Cambridge was closed, or London Studio closed when I know for a fact these people were not out there buying RIGS, not buying The Last Guardian or Gravity Rush, not even SNIFFING Concrete Genie or Blood & Truth. And it's not like Sony is some sort of fiend for closing down studios either. Days Gone didn't meet the critical standards they had for it, but you don't see them shutting down Bend. They're giving them another shot with a whole new IP. Media Molecule makes smaller titles as well, but they're still open. So if those studios were shut down, it was for a reason. People sensationalize this stuff too much sometimes. It's sad, it sucks for the people involved, but it's business at the end of the day. (And it's even worse when those same people and media figures were openly advocating a system that's now fast-tracking these closures in the first place.)

You get it. It's okay to love a game, but businesses gonna business their way through this business. And then the hypocrisy. It's good of true fans to lament the closure of studios that created products they actually loved and supported. But the rest of the mob? 80% of them didn't give a fuck about those games/studios/devs until internet outrage told them that they should.

I like this take as it is logical, compare this to Kid smooth who said the studios closing is down to playstation gamers not buying hifi rush etc etc, Very odd take as xbox has created the narrative that buying a game is not the way to consume

Okay, the first section of the video which is the small game I don’t want PlayStation to invest in these kind of games from their own studios ,just imagine the head of PlayStation Studios forcing Neil Druckmann or Cory to work on these kind of games they will go to another studio in one week PlayStation should continue the route that they took this generation with supporting third party small studio and we got a lot of good games from it sifu ,kena , zau , stray So when we got the rumour today about Sly Cooper I instantly said I will speak with my wallet and I’m not gonna buy the game.

  • @metachronicler
    @metachronicler18 күн бұрын

Let me start this off by saying that I pretty much totally agree with the first fourty minutes of the video, I do however take issue with the last part about remakes/remasters. Software isn't the same as the other forms of art you mentioned. The playstation 4 version is still playable on readily accessible hardware and PC which only came out just under four years ago. The medium hasn't changed that much to warrant a remake for a game that was rereleased so recently. For all the smoke you give the gaming media with respect to Xbox and gamepass don't you think it is weird how you don't want people pointing out how this push to remake everything is a problem? It is one thing if we are talking about reworking truly ancient stuff or something that is on a dead console but Horizon Zero Dawn isn't that. The more frequent these things become the less newer ideas we get to experience and the more we cement the idea that just because something is a bit older it is somehow lesser than. At best it starts to evoke the bad old days of fighting games having three or four different versions of the same game because there was no internet to distribute patches.

I disagree with your takes about remakes. First, if you actually do some research, you'll find out that most of them are used as a way to train up new talent and test new behind the scenes technologies. Second, they often don't cost a lot to make. Third, they're often done by a smaller, separate team and does not impede progress on other titles which are developed in tandem. Fourth, the age of the game has no bearing on whether it is worth making a remake. It all depends instead on whether the market will bear it. There's a reason there hasn't been a Jak & Daxter remake. Most people wouldn't buy it. A remake of TLOU or HZD would actually enjoy mass appeal, especially when combined with the TV shows. Again, it's not about you who has already experienced the game. It's about getting new fans in. Lastly, if you still have an issue with Remasters & Remakes, go take a look at Skyrim and its 17 versions. As you'll see. It has nothing to do with age, but everything to do with what the market will accept.

  • @metachronicler

@@E4xtreamA smaller green field project could easily be used for the same training purpose. Skyrim released on the PS3, PS4 isn't backwards compatible. On that point alone Skyrim is more justifiable than a HZD remake with respect to the art form itself. Obviously these remasters of much more recently released titles is just about the money and the fact that it is a safe bet. None of that changes the point that people are making to you about a lack of a need for a HZD remake. Those points have nothing to do with your personal desire for a remake. (These people were never making a market based argument against an HZD remake/remaster.) The same is true for all of your complaints about Xbox channels and their support for Microsoft initiatives, or their apparent distaste for Microsoft closing Tango gameworks. They are the segment that played the game. The problem in that case is that this segment was always too small. The only solution from the business end would be to reduce overall quality to adjust budgets downward to make Gamepass releases viable. We all brought up the problems with this model. But hey at least we have games we can disagree on whether they deserve a remaster or not so it can't be all bad.

You are right I own a Xbox Series X and played Hi-Fi Rush on gamepass, I completed the first chapter and never played it again. The game is ok, great visuals, great music, average gameplay. It was definitely overrated. Xbox fans want Halo and Gears to be great again.

You mic sounds Fine @Emmanuel Since You taking about Remake's did you like DEAD SPACE REMAKE ? Sad Tango Gameworks wouldn't get a Chance for "The Evil Within III" & Sadly Hellblade II Started in 2020 with Production According to Dom Mathews & 80 People worked on it. About the Microsoft Gaming Studio Closures Tango GameWorks upsets people because it was Japaneses & the Door Into Japan as good will If MSG wanted to save the Mobile Game Studio & it was an issue for Zenimax they could have said Alpha Dog Games joins KING they didn't Arkane Austin some will be folded into Bethesda Game Studios Austin/Dallas or ID Software Dallas, Roundhouse Studios into Zenimax Online Studios so they closed shutted 2 studios and Reorganized 2 others my Guess it ZOS "Roundhouse (Madision becomes a real studio not a Satelite Studio)

Putting a game in service simply doesn’t help the game or the creators, it helps the service it’s in. People won’t buy it when it’s given away, and I don’t see how MS expected/expects their games to sell when they are giving them away. So I blame Phil first for deciding to give their games away and conditioning his community to not buy games. And then I blame the Xbox community for enabling Phil when he makes obviously stupid developer unfriendly decisions because they benefit from “free” games, and not buying games that deserved their money and allowing the games to fail. And lastly I blame the ps fans for not being harder on Phil and the Xbox community and not berating them more and harder. There’s a lesson in all this. BUY. THE. GAMES. YOU. CARE. ABOUT.

I definitely agree with your takes on remakes. Xbox fans like to slander Playstation fans because of the remake releases. Wasn't Halo Infinite a remake of Halo Combat Evolved with an open world take? They love to sling the dirt when its on a medium or IP that they're not getting. I love when I missed out on a game but have a chance to experience it in HD glory.

12:18 This is false. The template doesn't work. Sony is bleeding billions because nobody is buying their games. People buy Playstations and only play games like COD and Fortnite. Their exclusives flop. WHich is why they're trying to put their games on PC and make their studios focus on live service now. It's also why Square Enix is going multi platform. They're not making any money being exclusive to PlayStation.

13:46 Phil can see the metrics. Xbox players do enjoy variety. It's also true that it's difficult for new properties to take off. Games like Alan Wake 2 from an established studio shouldn't have flopped but it did. Hi Fi rush fails while Hellblade survives. It's all a bit weird at the moment. It's hard to predict.

Great video. It's right to point the finger of blame where blame is due and to me the biggest culprit of them all is the media, publications and influencers alike. First, because they've been parroting ad nauseam any absurd and often unfounded Xbox fan's argument against PS just to get some clout and cover up for Xbox lack of significant game releases (PS is nothing but remakes, this and that PS game flopped, Sony is money hatting studios, etc.). Second, because they've been cheerleading Phil Spencer's entire PR talk for years without any critical input, like they are still doing now by talking doom and gloom about the entire industry, just because Xbox tries to lump everyone together to justify their own failure. As for HZD remake, I would gladly buy two copies if it came out. No shame in buying great games multiple times to show support, I do it all the time.

part of the reason tango was closed is because of MS directly. why pay 30 bucks for a game when you can have it on gamepass for a fraction of a price? that's a bad MS business decision closing a studio, not the player's fault. also no mention of the AB acquisition biting them in the ass since it's such a big bill they have to pay back.
