Fireproof Document Bags: Do They ACTUALLY Work?

I am working on improving my "In Case of an Emergency" binder and wanted to have it protected from fire. I purchased a few different Fireproof Document Bags, but I wanted to see if they would actually work in a fire, so I decided to test them out and make a video. Hopefully this video will help you with your purchase decision of a fireproof document bag for your important documents and cash.

We lost our home in the Camp Fire in paradise ca. In 2018. 17000 homes burnt. Safes are not safe in a uncontrolled fire. Everything inside them burnt and destroyed the guns. It was a big lesson to us. Loved your video. I learned multiple copies of important documents is a must. Remember you can have more then one copy of your birth certificate and social security card or equivalents. Keep them off site.

Thanks for the ideas. Keeping them off site is a good idea. Even some hidden away in the car on a flash drive would be a good idea, as most of us would be getting outta dodge in that car, or on a cloud drive as well. I’m so terribly sorry about your home, neighborhood, and the loss of so much around you. It seems like yesterday when it occurred. I hope you’ve been able to recover from your loss. Paradise was a beautiful town to live in.

So disheartened to hear of the devastation to you and those 17000 families. But grateful you are safe. That is so true about those fire safes, they are limited. Definitely agree with keeping multiple copies of important docs, and in off site locations. Another item to add is a home inventory, including model/serial numbers and pictures when possible. Will be that much less drama to deal with when it comes to insurance.

Nicely done. As you went over in the video, these are meant to be a buffer to help keep some valuables safe rather than a catch-all, all in one solution. Thankfully we can backup documents digitally. I don't keep my vehicle registration in the car given my address is on it but have a photo of it on my phone. All of that being said, preparing to deal with a fire is far more likely for most homeowners than other tragedies.

Good review. My 2 cents thoughts - a really fireproof safe will have to be huge and bulky, and therefore not portable. So that's for precious metals and stones, which I don't have LOL. Critical documents, HDDs, DVD (non-volatile 3rd level backup to HDDs), passports - then these have to be portable. Grab and go. So the ICE Binder idea is better then. But if fire breaks out when you're not home to grab & run, then the ICE Binder will need to be inside a bigger safe. And in the basement, since heat rises upwards.

Thanks for doing this - it makes a good point about what "fire-proof" should mean. I have come to the conclusion that a "fireproof" safe ought to be buried in the ground under the house where possible. Heat rises and the ground doesn't really burn that much so the safe would be under much less heat stress below ground level.

Yeah, most people think gun safes are fireproof, but if there's nowhere to remove the heat then after about a half hour most safes will start to cook and char their contents in a process called pyrolysis. Organic material will break down into bio oils, gasses, and char. The oils and gasses will boil off, escape the safe/container, and burn leaving only the char. It's the same process as creating char-cloth in a char tin for survival tinder bundles, but on a much bigger scale. The best way to protect unique items is to bury them a few feet deep in an area away from combustibles like houses, trees, and other moderately large vegetation. Whether that's a permanent bunker with a well insulated door, or a hasty hole is really the best way to minimize fire damage if moving the items off site isn't possible. A basement vault may also be able to out endure the total burn time of the above structure if the walls are thick enough and the surrounding ground can absorb most of that heat quickly enough before turning the vault into an oven hot enough for pyrolysis.

  • @first2summit
    @first2summit2 жыл бұрын

Here's the additional problem or question - Even if the bags maintain its integrity, does it keep the heat out of the bags? If the interior of the bag rises to around 425F or higher, that's the temp paper burns and once it starts burning, the temp only gets higher until it consumes all the oxy from the container. An analogy is like a dutch oven - you can put it on the fire and while the oven stays intact, it gets so hot inside it cooks the food.

So, what have we learned here? That paper will burn if exposed to naked flame. That this type of bag is no protection in a real life fire situation. That the bags will protect but are destroyed in the process if cooked in an oven and that your papers will be fine, unprotected, under the same conditions since the $100 bill looks undamaged at the end of being cooked in the oven as seen at 5:36. So the advantage of the bag was what? 😊 Fun video though.

Thanks so much for making this video. I saw another one where Roloway was the winner too. The hard fire safes by Sentrysafe and Honeywell are so damn heavy, and small inside, and many of them don't even have handles to pick them up. I wish someone could test a small $60-90 USD metal filing cabinet or metal ammo boxes with the flexible fire safes inside. I know metal will eventually burn, but mainly concerned how to protect photos, photo albums and hard drives. Many of these safes promise to protect from 2000 degrees for 30 minutes. Doubtful.

Great test. But to get the higher temps, get 2 simple large pans place bag in one pan, use other pan as lid and place I fire pit outside

Good video.. Would like to see how the bags hold up in a small safe thrown in the fire.

YAY! Awesome video, thanks for testing those! I was sooo curious about these. Well, I did something else since I have trust issues in similar products LOL I saved all scans of my important documents on one of those 400GB camera memory cards (now they are trending around 50 USD!!! WHATTA STEAL) - they are tiny, super light, forget bulky and low performing USB flash drives, camera memory cards! :-) Just a thought .... :-)

I'd like to see a video like this where it goes into the internal temperature in the bag, b/c there's a chance that it's so hot inside the bag that whatever you have in there starts to boil or burn and what you end up with is essentially molten contents in the bag, which isn't great. For example, if you save some kind of document with a seal on it, that document might get so hot that the seal melts, damaging the document and anything around it--i.e. a document with more internal volume + dividers might be good long term.

THANK YOU for pointing out those BAGS are not intended to withstand direct flames. So many bad reviews posted from people throwing the bags into a fire...really?? Even "fireproof" safes barely survive a devastating fire. However, it is worse that the manufacturers to advertise in that way. I'd also like to commend you on your ICE bag! That is a fantastic idea and I would like to suggest something that should be included in that bag. A home inventory and where possible, include model/serial numbers and pictures of items. That information will be extremely helpful for insurance purposes in the event of any kind of damage or theft to your home. Also keeping copies of important docs in a separate location an optimal idea.

Would still make a good storage for things that are heat sensitive that we keep in the car eg backup battery, documents etc

Fireproof is fraudulent. Heat resistant is an accurate description.

Paper ignites at around 480F (not Ray Bradbury's 451F) so that would have been a better test.

The waterproofing would help if you had salt water plastic jugs surrounding the document holder. The water boiling will prevent the ignition point of the paper. It is also possible that salt will help dissipate the Heat. You can make a concrete barrier around the safe to also dissipate Heat. Concrete is very cheap. You may also utilize a sand insulation barrier.

Direct flame impingement in a structure fire can be in the area of 1200 to 2000 degrees F. You have to check on the fine print and see to what time amount they are saying things are "fireproof". A lot of these companies misrepresent the terms of fireproof and fire resistive. Inside of a safe, without additional protection of a bag like these, etc, your documents will be like the bill in the oven. They will heat until they reach the temperature of combustion and then ignite. Once one ignites, the rest will follow shortly after. A bag like this will help but not guarantee survival, but it sure will help. I have seen many safes after fires that had prolonged direct heat impingement for while where the documents were nothing but ash.
