I was off-roading years back near Florence, AZ and got stuck in fresh 4ft mud. There happened to be x2 M1 abrams and x3 APC's. They were just coming from the range and were being sent to Yuma, AZ. What was awesome, is that one of the M1's pulled me out, without trying. The chained messed up my bumper, but that shit is hanging on my shop wall, with the signatures of the crew FOREVER. Our military is kick ass! The leaders not so much, but the soldiers are irreplaceable! God bless America and all the serve her!

A discussion of wheeled armoured vehicles is incomplete without mention of the Battle of the Lomba River, where South African Ratel wheeled armoured vehicles of 61 Mechanised Battalion successfully engaged and destroyed a numerically far superior force of Russian tanks and apc's of FAPLA's 47 Brigade, and executed a resounding victory. Wheeled armoured vehicles in a setpiece battle against Main Battle Tanks, and winning convincingly. I feel that this excellent documentary is the poorer for ommitting this most important episode in the history of wheeled armoured vehicles.

Dude there is nothing more annoying than people acting like they're know-it-alls in the comment section. One kid kept arguing about how we could win the war in Afghanistan if we'd issue the troops M1 Garands. It's amazing how people will argue about anything just to feel a sense of validation on the internet or KZread.

Yes, Canada make s many wheeled vehicles. As a smaller military it is far more likely that they will have to out flank or practice hit & run on a larger enemy until they whittle them down to size. In the USA with large populated countries growing in military strength: we are going to have to move to this type of military also. (India, China, Indonesia, etc.) I really think that both Canada & the USA are going to arm themselves with more wheeled vehicles and less tracked; although, in the past few years tracked vehicles are becoming more mobile and they have better ability to navigate rougher terrain.

Actually, the Striker is a lightened version of the Canadian LAV 3. The LAV 3 has a long history going back to MOWAK but its immediate predecessors were designed in Canada. As far back as the late 90s design work was collaborative not directly derivative. The company that originally produced the vehicles was General Motors in London Ont. General Dynamics bought The General Motors land force division not MOWAG. The current Canadian unit is the LAV 6.

The Stryker was based on the LAV III which was in turn based on the Marine Corp LAV25 but has nothing in common with the latter. From what I understand the LAV25 is completely amphibious and will fit comfortably in a C130 Hercules and the Stryker can do neither. What is infinitely worse is that the Stryker also has diminished capability from the LAV 25 in both range and speed not to mentioned diminished firepower with an M2 50 caliber rather than the 25mm Chain gun. Why the US army didn't just buy the same machine as the Marine Corps is a sick joke that the grunts that have to use it will pay dearly for.

My criticism of you is about removing the name of a bay that has been known as the Persian Gulf for thousands of years all over the world. G'day Ivan, I used to work in Dubai for an English language newspaper. I don't know about UN maps but I can tell you for sure the name 'Persian Gulf' is deeply disliked in all countries of that region and is not used at all. If one of my journalists ever made the mistake of writing 'Persian Gulf' in their copy they would get a right carpeting from the Editor. I think you go too far to suggest not using this name damages trust and honesty. It's not dishonest to use the alternatives of Arabian Gulf or Arab Gulf, which are widely used in that part of the world by local governments, the media and in general conversation. Persian Gulf is a name, not used by all and after all is just a name. I can't see it 'damaging' anything. It does have something to do with history; it's highly considered to be an old fashioned term. It's like Istanbul or Constantinople, one is the modern name, one is the old name. Place names around the world change over time, it's really not such a big deal. Expecting the video makers to 'compensate' [sic] in future videos is a little 'high handed' of you. Cheers, BH

In such cases, we must obey international laws and regulations, not what this or that country likes. There's a sea in that region called Arab sea . Is this good to change the name to Persian sea by Iranian people ? Of course this sort of things are not allowed today. The truth is that the oil dollars of the small Arab countries south of the Persian Gulf are more lovable and important to some Western media than obeying the truth , International principles and laws. Not at all. Infantry will always need a means of armoured transport in any battlefield. Are IFVs and APCs susceptible to being spotted and attacked by UAVs? Yes, but that goes for any ground vehicle. Indeed, one could argue UAVs are equally susceptible to vehicles like the Gepard and Tunguska that use high-power AA guns and SAMs.

True, but wheeled AFVs are designed for low intensity conflict, so the common weapon the WAFVs will face is the RPG7. In response Strykers have been fitted with stacks of metal bars around the vehicle, to counter the RPG7. Even in Vietnam, US armoured crews erected chicken wire fence around their M113s for the same purpose. But WW2 weapons are not in use any more, sure T55 are used in third world countries, but the 105 mm cannon of the Stryker can deal with them. And there is airpower: Apaches, A-10,F16 or F18 aircraft to deal with enemy armour.

@@mardiffv.8775 We are used to dealing with the Third World. But even they have SAM's, which will take care of aircraft at an unsatisfactory exchange rate, human and financial. And not all future combat may be "low intensity." And you really want a Stryker or the like going up against a tank with a gun that laughs at meal bars, much less "chicken wire"? And the primary Stryker armament is still the Mark 2 .50 MG. You control which target the enemy selects, or the enemy, only in your dreams.

@@thomaslinton5765 It is true that a lot third world countries have SAM's. Thank God the US Air Force has Stealth aircraft and anti radar missiles (AARGM), to deal with SAM's. And Strykers variants with TOW missiles and the 105 mm cannon can deal with the old tanks. Turkey has armed drones with anti tank missiles, which were very effective against T72's, during the last Armenian-Azerbaijan war.

@@mardiffv.8775 Dream on. The vast majority of Strykers have neither TOWs or 105MMs. Will the enemy wait until it's "fair"? Hardfy, as all those Leopards lost by Turkey fighting the Kurds and Abrams tanks lost in Yemen demonstrate. Dense infantry screens will be needed, with the personnel loses those produce.

You're very wrong my friend, tracks can break : because of a mine, an enemy tank's fire, a rocket and even a rough terrain with lots of stones like in Afghanistan. And if its tracks break, a tank can't move and repairing it on a battlefield would last hours and it would require the help of a support vehicle. On the other hand, wheeled vehicles are able to withstand an explosion and continue to drive even with disabled wheels. It happened to a french VBCI in Afghanistan. An IED exploded under one of them, disabling two wheels. But the VBCI managed to come back to its base with the 6 remaining wheels

Well we saw how good the LAV25 really was in Iraq unfortunately. Maybe great for scouting, but now for patrolling a City infested with Guerrilla’s planting IED’s, it was shite.

4:31 this isn't true my family members who fought in the gulf war explained how easy it was destroying these vehicles with tanks at one shot the tires would burn, many of them were destroyed to the point where the saudis would just get out of the vehicle and retreat. that's how Iraq captured khafgi twice until the american air bombardment became too heavy for the iraqi forces there. And ofc the Abrams with air support is what made them win not those vehicles tho

Even tanks are vulnerable against ied's, only MRAPs offer sufficient protection. Wheeled vehicles offer the vollowing advantages in comparising to similar tracked vehicles: half the fuel consumption, half the maintenace (double the mileage for the routine maintenance), lighter vehicle, easier to airtransport (so it takes less time to transport wheeled vehicles to the another country), higher speed = getting out trouble real fast.

@@mardiffv.8775 Wheeled armor is surprisingly better than tracked vehicles as MRAPs, since an IED is likely to be able to sever a track, immobilizing the vehicle. By contrast, wheeled vehicles like an MRAP or even vehicles with mine resistance built-in or retrofitted such as the later double-V bottom Strykers and the Ratel have the ability to get out of the area with the surviving wheels, assuming the blast wasn't big enough to wipe out the transmission.
