After watching this video I discovered whoever did my old fireplace didn't screw a proper thermocouple into the gas valve but instead rigged a non-standard thermocouple, attached it to the valve using an extra component with a wire which is welded/glued to a washer. Removing all that junk now with totally new components. If the gas valve location in mine didn't match this video exactly, I probably never would have figured it out. Thanks!!

great video. All I did was hit my thermopile with sand paper and it worked. Saved me a ton of money and aggravation going into the holidays. I had people preparing for me for a full-on replacement/remodel and then I found this video and fixed it. Thanks!

Thank you very much for finally solving my issue. What helped me was that you said that the flame had to be blue hot, but mine was yellow and pointing slightly away from the thermal-pile. There was a little ball of the fake ash in the way. I used a screw driver to push it out of the way, the flame is now blue, and the fireplace started right up.

hello all, thank you for the video and explanation!! Could you please offer me a link to take to pieces and then rebuild a thermoregulator (preferably Eurosit). Heather is 25 years and doing just fine. But, I need to service it once a year, and I AM needing a good video on the regulator. Looking forward I remain. I have an electronic ignition so no pilot light. My problem seems to be with the thermocouple not igniting. The gas flows and I can light the fireplace with a barbecue lighter. As soon as I turn it off, I'm right back to where I started. How can I test my thermocouple if I don't have a pilot light?

Negative voltage reading, reversed polarity?? Anyone with an idea feel free to comment. With the help of this awesome video, I determined that I had a bad thermocouple and decided to replace the entire SIT pilot assembly on my 17-year old direct vent natural gas fireplace. After installing the new pilot housing it still did not operate correctly. It appeared that the new thermocouple was also bad, as the pilot light would not stay lit when releasing the knob to switch from "pilot" to "on". So I tested the voltage of the newly installed thermocouple and it reads as a negative number (No, I do not have the red/black leads in the wrong ports of the multimeter). If I switch the measuring tips hooking the red clip to the copper wire shaft and the black tip to the thermocouple nub (end that connects to gas valve) then I get a positive reading! It is as if the polarity on the thermocouple is reversed. Can this be? If so, did I cause it somehow, like accidentally grounding both ends, for example? Or could this be a manufacturing defect?

Hello, Sounds like it may be the gas control that is the issue. Not a reverse polarity thermocouple. If you contact fire-parts directly they should be able to help

Does the gas solenoid valve work directly off this 8 to 30 millivolt signal or is it using an electronic circuit for threshold detection?

The pilot light should be cleaned first to create a strong blue flame, then test the thermocouple, and if found to be faulty replace. If the thermocouple readings are good then you may need to replace the gas control valve.

@@fire-parts6588 thanks for the info. So are you saying that if the pilot light goes out when I let go of the pilot button, then it could just be that the thermocouple needs to be cleaned? That would be great if it's that simple. I will try that tonight before testing it.

Did you find the problem? One thing you can do is to check to make sure the holes where the gas exits into your fireplace are not blocked.

  • @jimbarron8688

If your fireplace system has both a thermocouple and a thermopile the thermopile might be to blame. The thermocouple only holds in the pilot safety valve so if the pilot remains lit after you release the gas cock in the pilot position you know it's good. Once you turn the gas cock to the on position and make a call for flame its the thermopile that produces the milivolts to open the main gas valve. If you do not have flame it could be that your thermopile has failed, connections are poor or loose, thermostat or switch not calling for flame, gas cock left in pilot position, possibly a break somewhere in the wiring to or from the thermostat or switch, or the thermostat or switch has an unusually high resistance i.e not specific to a milivolt system. You might also want to ensure that the pilot burner is unobstructed and directing a strong blue flame towards the thermopile as well as the thermocouple (and towards the logset burners if it has 3 burner ports.)
