One thing to remember is you never go in alone and you don't go out alone. Always keep physical contact with you partner. Physical fitness plays a big part in getting your heart to relax (slow down) after it has been working hard. Conserving that last bit of air in your tank takes a lot of practice to reach 20+/- minutes.
Great video and thanks for the information. One thing, if I may suggest. When you run out of air try not to take everything off, helmet, hood and mask. Practice land marking your release mechanism on your face piece and when you are totally out of air take your regulator off your face mask. Even for this video. Then once you have done this take a couple of seconds to put your face piece opening into your glove (as if your face piece is your hand), a N95 mask or the bottom of your hood. Filter as best you can. Practice running out of air every mask check. Breathe till there is no air, then take two more breathes. Feel the panic (even though you are totally safe). You want to rip everything off but don't. Land mark and remove (land mark with your hand early especially with gloves on). RIT teams will prefer you with your face piece on and practicing this will help you with composure when its demanded.
Thank you Ernie Rhodes, you may have just saved my life.
we dont moan or complaine...and we do more than just fight fire.....everthing we do is drilled into us to save property and lives . lives of those who need rescuing or the lives of my fellow firefighters. not one single fireman does the job to be a hero it just so happens that every now and again we have to do something that your average joe might not be able. been a firefighter 3 years now and have been trained to the higest standard so this video makes so much sense....thank you

This all differs from manufacturer to manufacturer. Scott's are different than MSA packs. After your LOA turns off on some MSA units, you have a few seconds. Scotts, you have minutes... Key point, know your limitations and equipment.

Awesome video! Stay calm and trust in your team and equipment. Good job!
Nice job! I'm going to incorporate this in our next training.
No way! Damn! Thanks for the tip. It seems like common sense... but I never would have imagined that you could get that much more air.
Really informative. What a great tool! Thanks!

Some years ago I was participating as a victim in a confined space training and my air equipment lasted 45 minutes and still had 1500 psi left in a resting position Hace algunos años me tocó estar participando como víctima en un entrenamiento de espacios confinados y mi equipo de aire me duró 45 minutos y aún le quedaban 1500 psi estando en una posición de reposos.
awesome video thanks
Training officer would have a feild day with that pass alarm going off 15 push ups everytime it goes off during training lol.
your chances of survival dramatically decrease when you wait for the rit team to come and get you. Your best odds are to try and self extricate.
super kool.. im starting academy soon and knowing all this... I thinking is going to help out a lot...

Very good!
Wicked cool 😎 video. Thanks 😊.
When I am working in a SCBA I find that I have only about 15 to 20 mins of air. If you have already been working for a few mins then you will have even less air than this guy. Basically you breathe shallow. At least that is what I do. Our department only goes in the structure if there is someone trapped inside. We make the primary attack from the outside. When the flame is knocked down then we let our guys in to fight on the inside to mop up the hot spots. It is safer for everybody that way.

+swatson1190 see some times you have to do a Attack inside the house bc the fire might already be in walls so you want to tear down the walls and put water on it ASAP or you lose all Chances to go inside

good strategy, but if you go like that -at least i think so- you´re gonna put so much water on the fire, that the structure ill be destroyed by the water, not the fire.... i think and what do you to if the fire is in the basement?

One thing I do is chew gum, it helps regulate breathing, plus chewing gum reduces anxiety and stress
Great tips..the only question I have is should u really stop looking for a means of egress and just lay there and wait (hope) for RIT to find you..I'm a probie just inquiring if anyone has any input I would appreciate it..thanks !!
What was the breathing technique he used though?!

Box breathing it looked like inhale slow 3 to 4 seconds hold for 3 to 4 seconds exhales 3 to 4 seconds hold for 3 to 4 seconds repeat. You can also do skip breathing, rebt breathing, straw breathing or tactical breathing but with tactical it should be done when known you are going in for a longer period and started as soon as you put the mask on. Not all work for everyone thats whybwe integrate them into training you gotta know your equiptment and your own limitations find wich works for you cardio is your friend build your lungs up and diaphram get use to working with your equiptment and wieght of your equiptment
Follow your department SOPs. Answers on youtube are not what firefighters use to establish survival techniques.
cool
When I teach air pak breathing I try to tell the people breath,inhale through your nose exhale through your mouth
Why did he only have 3 minutes and 23 seconds of air when his Vibralert went off

More on the breathing technique wouldv'e been helpful. And there are some situations where you should keep working, so your mileage may vary. Of course it helps to know the man upstairs, in case things don't work out. You just never know when....

WOAH WOAH WOAH that hood needs to go all the way around that mask buddy that's just plastic there and it will not stop that heat or flame
@ardyc6390

+tim rediske You're wrong. What about the rest of the back of your head/neck that's covered by just the hood? It's actually the contrary - people who put the hood over their masks actually compromise their visibility even more than the mask already does. Having it put over the seal saves you visibility, and protects you adequately.
@hunteraudlin6108

stop and think about what you said. Visibility in black smoke... Doesn't work like that.
Sucking your mask is a odd feeling but you need to learn it

yea i would love to see how you handle what we do. the way you think and way you act will get you killed in this kind of work, you are ignorant to how dangerous this job really is and it sickens me to see it. i bet money you would freak out in a kind of situation like when your house is on fire, and would vomit when you see someones guts are hanging out.
