I’d salute you but I’m a civilian, but I’m grateful for you going over and serving not just your country but trying to make a change over seas (though it seems others may see it differently) and then going to make someone else’s worst day better.

@@Gavyn50567 Do not be ungrateful, Australians, Americans many went and bled in Afghan, afghani people lived peacefully in Afghanistan until the terrorists known as the Taliban came along, tried to overthrow the government. NATO + Allies went in to stop the terrorists, a peacekeeping force. As a man from Australia, I am dismayed and perplexed you have no idea about modern warfare. America fought Afghanistan, many did, many fought for the freedom of Afghanistan, until Joe Biden, a delusional old man, ordered withdrawal. Those warriors, fought and bled for you. RESPECT them.

Greetings. I am a retired USA firefighter/EMT with 48 years on the job. My advice for your future career is this. Get your cardiovascular system as strong and healthy as you can. Don’t drink, do drugs, smoke or get involved with the wrong people. Improve your reading and comprehending skills. Those will be demanded in your training and career. Learn to listen and develop patience with other people. Develop a courageous nature, based upon education, knowledge, and experience. Listen to the folks who have been doing this work as they’ve seen and done it all. Find a mentor or two who will help you develop the skills necessary to do this job. In the fire service there is much danger, heartache, sadness and extraordinary joy all combined into every shift you work. You’ll need to develop a tough skin but a soft heart as you’ll see and experience horrible things that people get themselves in to, but you’ll experience events that will make you glad you were there. You’ll see people having the worst day of their life, and your job is to try and make it less worse or even better. If you have a fear of heights or claustrophobic, learn to overcome them. And finally, work hard to learn this job. Your training academy will equip you with the skills necessary to do it. The fire service has a history and culture of a strong companionship among themselves. We help, tease, fight, argue and share life with each other and we always have each other’s back. The friendships developed in the fire service last a lifetime because all went through the same experiences together. It doesn’t matter where in the world you serve in this job, we are all brothers and sisters, always as one, always together. You become a true public servant to your citizens and fellow man. There is no greater calling than that. Jesus said “ greater love has no man than to lay down his life for his friends..” I think that fully encompasses the fire service.

Greatest advice I can give you is to not give up. It’s easy to encounter small issues and give up. It’s what I used to do. I’m 19 and went to academy with people twice my age. They picked on me for it and I had almost every disadvantage compared to the other men in my class. I went out of my comfort zone and free climbed a 40 foot ladder to spite my extreme fear of heights. I pushed myself to my limits and there will be times where you will be pushed too, but never give up.

Stay fit, stay out of trouble, get good grades in school and when you are eligible I recommend getting your nfpa 1001 and 1002 ff1 and 2 which will include hazmat ops. If you can find a department that will take you in and certify you thats even better.

Nice video! I'm going to a cadet firefighter program. I'm almost 14. Could any firefighters give me some advice? Thanks!
Should I be a firefighter or a marine?
