Everybody always mentions Homelander has super hearing, but it's not like it's always activated. Just like his xray vision, heat vision or flying, he has to choose to do those things. Just like superman

It is always activated because both him and Ryan were hurt from the pile of loud speakers in s2e8. But having sensitive hearing doesn't mean he can instantly distinguish any relevant information coming towards him. For example he probably heard Hughie in the vents before started talking to Vicky but there was just no reason for him to make anything out of that sound among 100 others.

I think the writers of the show went too far with this episode. They played Hughie's grape for laughs. Not a good episode.

She was no threat to him and was oblivious that Tek Knight was. Also she was startled when Hughie started trying to guess his safe word and he said he was all good. That's straight up consent. The purpose of safe words is to take other signs lightly during bdsm session.
