    British-mechanic I'm a Hgv mechanic and occasionally get work on British fire engines. I drive a fast car reasonably well, but I take my hat off to the men and women who drive these fantastic machines. I get to drive them around the industrial park where I work, I don't obviously drive as quick as your dad, and never will. I don't know how he does, you can really feel the weight of them as you go into corners at speed. I wish him and his colleagues good health and happiness in there jobs and life

    wots ma name. Thanks mate I’ll tell him. I’ve got an old video somewhere of me as a kid driving the fire engine round the yard of the old Victorian fire station in our area (before they built a modern new one 😭) sat on my dads lap. Bet you wouldn’t get away with that now! All I can ever remember is the smell of rubber and smoke, I think it was the b.a and other things around

    Richard Jones ... they'd have to pack the kit away as quickly as possible, and then respond to the call. It happens all the time. But if the make-up would result in a significantly delayed response they'd have to inform control, who may or may not, turn out another machine from another station.

    Emergency One is the body builder (a fire appliance is built on a commercial chassis (Volvo, Scania, etc) E1 I think I remember are a Scottish based company. The in cab electronics (the E1 screen) provide the driver (and admin) with all necessary info on the how the machine is working and performing. I used to buy fire appliances.

    The speed humps were installed to slow down inconsiderate drivers, but it's the emergency services which are delayed in their response times.

  • @Jessebella1

    @Jessebella1

    5 жыл бұрын

    No, they do slow down inconsiderate drivers, they do stop people being hit and in the more quiet back roads they are installed they do keep children in the streets safer and they do the job they set out to do, you say it as if all they do is dely response times for emergency services. My daughter was hit by a car as she ran out between parked cars after the ice cream truck and if it wasnt for those speed bumps slowing the driver down to a crawl, she would be dead. Its a shame they slow emergency services down but i still think without them it would be worse.

    The Fire Service don't use sat navs for some reason. In Ambulances the MDT gives us the info on the job and then maps us to the incident. The Fire Service still use teleprinters which print out the job and grid ref and they then use an A-Z to navigate.

    The road on the yard side of our house is especially narrow, and yet I have seen a fire engine go along it (i live in a block of terrace houses, and the roads on the yard side of the houses are very narrow, and the roads on the garden side of the houses are reasonably wide, there are multiple blocks of terrace houses, with the garden sides back to back and the yard sides back to back)

    I do wish the driver kept his eyes on the road at all times. There was no need to look at his colleague when he spoke. 8+ tonnes of fire engine can do a lot of damage if the unexpected happened when you're looking elsewhere.
