Fire TV Stick Power Consumption

Ғылым және технология

Measuring the power consumption of the Amazon FIre TV stick and the supplied AC USB adapter.
Using the PortaPow USB watt meter and a generic AC watt meter allows us to measure just the stick usage or the supplied AC adapter which has minimal losses when converting 220V AC down to 5V USB.
Remember that the PortaPow backlight consumes ~0.5W, so the measurement of the AC watt meter is affected whenever it's turned on.
Most USB ports built into TVs seem to power the Fire TV stick without the need for the dedicated AC USB adapter. Although sometimes a warning about the low power is given, it can generally be ignored.
If doing a firmware upgrade, you'll probably want to ensure the stick is plugged into the AC adapter so it has more than enough power.

Do you think turning off auto update would effect its sleep power consumption. That function usually prevents devices from going any lower during off or sleep so that it can occasionally turn on to check and install updates. Either way, the power consumption seems so low even during use, that it doesn't matter too much.

As most everyone else had said, very helpful! Ideally you would be able to run the same tests while plugged up to a tv or lesser power supply. I wonder if, once the amazon firestick/TV confirms it’s has less power available, it consumes less power hence using less of the processor.

can I use 2amp adaptor for my fire TV stick? is it safe with that much amperes? on that voltage it reads my HDD perfectly. or should I drop down to 1.5amp?

+Akshay Raj the stick will only draw as much current as it needs so it could be a 500 amp USB adapter and it wouldn't make any difference :)

Gadget Addict I've read many articles on Quora and other @&## and it says it's strictly advised to match the exact voltage. it's pretty scary cuz I don't want to damage my fire stick😢😟😞

very informative. so we know that the fire stick consumes about 3W max. Thats like a maximum of 0.6A (600mA) at 5volts DC. But if your stick keeps restarting when plugged to your TV, you should try a wall power adapter. Many TV USB ports only supply a maximum of 0.5A (500mA). When the fire stick draws up to 0.6A (600mA) those TVs will fail to supply adequate power.

It's been awhile since posting this video but I eventually found out the stick was overheating and rebooting.
