Ronnie Van Zant is the vocalist. Allen Collins is playing lead guitar here, although they have three guitars going in their songs: Allen, Gary Rossington, and here, on their first album, Ed King. Bob Burns is on drums, Leon Wilkeson on bass, and Billy Powell on keyboards. This band's story is amazing. For the most part, they were poor street kids from Jacksonville, Florida who became one of the best bands ever. They recorded 6 albums (one live) from 1973-1977. With the addition of Steve Gaines on guitar, Ed King, who contributed greatly to their early success had left a year earlier, they were REALLY taking off. On October 20, 1977 their plane crashed near Gillsburg, Mississippi. Both pilots were killed, the assistant road manager, backup singer Cassie Gaines (Steve's sister), Steve died, and the leader, vocalist, lyricist, and heart and soul of the band, Ronnie Van Zant. The remainder of the band suffered serious injuries. They reformed ten years later with Ed King returning for a time, and Ronnie's younger brother, Johnny on vocals. They still tour today, although it has never been the same without Ronnie.

Gonna have to step in & correct you on this.... There were only two guitars on this album. Leon Wilkeson didn't play a single note on this album, Ed King played bass on this entire album. Leon didn't think the band was going to take off so he left the band about 8 months before they recorded this album at Muscle Shoals. I believe they talked Leon into coming back a couple of days before this photo shoot. A little fun fact about this particular photo that made it onto the cover is the lighting bolt running behind Ed's head was real, you can see it passing in front of the light fixture. There is another photo that shows them ducking for cover the split second after this photo. It was enough that it made Gary Rossington throw up all over the sidewalk.

So true, I love seeing young people "discover" the classics. I'm surprised a lot of times by the things they pick up on that l, in some cases, I never did or didn't until the 1000th listen.

In the beginning of this song it is Gary Rossington playing the slide guitar making those beautiful sounds. On the last half it is Allen Collins playing the lead. Allen wrote that riff at 16 years old. Left to right on that album cover you have Leon Wilkeson (bass ) Billy Powell (keyboards) Ronnie Van Zant (vocals) Gary Rossington (guitar) sitting in the center, Bob Burns (drums) standing behind Gary, Allen Collins (guitar) and Ed King (guitar) rounding out the guitar army. You can't go wrong with Lynyrd Skynyrd. Try The needle and the spoon or whatever you want because as I said you can't go wrong with LS.

You now need to view the 1977 Oakland live concert. I went to it. It was one hell of a show. I was 33 then and am now 68 and still rockin and livin in the Philippines. Served 30 yrs. in the military and found the Philippines the best place to retire.

Great performance and sound, but the worst camera work I have ever seen in concert footage. The focus is almost never on who is playing.

That Smell, Simple Man, and Sweet Home Alabama are their other biggest hits. I'm sure you've heard Sweet Home Alabama, unless you've been living under a rock.

Actually you really need to see the live version of this song, which was at the Oakland coliseum on July 2,1977, It will truly blow your mind. And the lead singer was the late great Ronnie Van Zant, who passed away in the plane crash on October 20 of 1977.

The Stones were cooked in 1976, and at Knebworth, they spent the entire evening backstage getting high and drinking champagne at a Moet and Chandon party that included Jack Nicholson. The show had severe technical difficulties by the time 10cc arrived, and cancellation was imminent. Skynyrd was hungry and revitalized with the addition of Steve Gaines, while the Stones had been in the game for 16 years and were on the brink of disbandment. Moreover, their lead guitarist Mick Taylor (1969-1974) abruptly quit the band, which hurt their live act in 1975-76. So, if you want to champion Skynyrd beating a mediocre version of the Stones who were more interested in being rock stars and doing drugs, that's fine.

@@jfrisaro Indeed, Skynyrd stole the show that day-no one will argue that. But context is certainly needed. With a band like the Stones, it's like the Wild West: the Stones were the fastest gun alive, and every "gunslinger" wanted a piece. It comes with being a great band and having a longstanding prestige. I wonder if Skynyrd could have maintained the pace the Stones went at, as Ronnie was already talking about retirement the next year and experiencing his own version of "burnout." Wasn't he going to hand the reins over to Steve and shift his focus to the studio?

@@fuchsiaswing8545 A few years earlier, Skynyrd warmed up for The Who, by far a better live band than the Stones, and gave them a run for their money on stage. Ronnie’s mantra was always to blow the other acts off the stage. Yes, LS had their share of turmoil in 5 yrs. You act like the Stones were the only. Replaced Bob, who had a breakdown. Ed quit mid tour. Addictions were a problem. Ronnie’s voice was bothering him. Obviously Stevie breathed new life into LS. Street Survivors was about to be a massive album. Hard to imagine LS was slowing down. Would have loved to see how LS’s trajectory would have been. It’s tragic we’ll never know. But they were badass and not afraid of a fight. Their 5 yr catalog of music ranks up with any band, ever. They dominated the Stones. History showed that and no one dominated them.

​@@jfrisaro I greatly respect Skynyrd, and as a bass player, I always loved Leon's style. That said, I am not "acting" as if the Stones were the only band to experience turmoil. It's part of being in a band, but let's show a little respect for them as they defied enormous odds and helped pave the way for numerous others, such as Skynyrd. In fact, in the summer of 1964, didn't Ronnie, Gary, and Bob Burns form the earliest incarnation of Lynyrd Skynyrd (My Backyard) in high school after listening to the Stones' "Time Is On My Side"? That puts into context how long the Stones have been around. The Who is one of the greatest bands, and they had a habit of overshadowing the Stones as a live act in the pre-Mick Taylor era. However, from 1969-1973, the Stones were an unstoppable force on stage. Although not as musically proficient as the Who, they could give any of the best live acts a run for their money, and Pete Townshend habitually fawns over them to this day. I agree: they dominated the Stones at Knebworth, but as stated in my previous comments, the setting and situation could have been better. I never liked the arrangements during their 1975-76 tours, as Billy Preston and Ollie Brown were given too much emphasis as sidemen. Keith hated it, and that's why everything was scaled down to basics for the Some Girls Tour, which was one of the best in the Ronnie Wood era.
