Specificity of training is what he is talking about, if you are training to compete in one thing and you are spending majority of your training time for something else, then that becomes "junk training" because you are supposed to utilize your training time precisely in order to progress at the fastest possible rate, *at what you are competing.* For example lets say you wanna have the best boxing reflexes possible but you don't have a boxing gym to train at. So you are practicing juggling with an increasing number of balls and that will improve your reflex and coordination. However if you did have a boxing gym with a speedbag and multiple partners to train with, what you should have been doing is sparring and doing the speedbag. If you still kept juggling MOST of the time while the real training takes a backseat then that is JUNK TRAINING. Hope that made sense.

To develop footwork with a jumprope you need to do more than just jump straight up and down. There's a lot of different movements you can make: single foot (or both feet) left-to-right, front-to-back, high knee sprints, single foot doubles, etc. It's also a great warm-up if you hate running like I do.

I think he answered himself as to what set Ali apart from other jump ropers. He said that GSP was set apart because he is a hard worker but also smart so he works in the right direction. So Ali was also a hard worker who was smart and was more skilled at using the jump rope as a tool to supplement the training. He implied this himself in the interview, but the worker is what makes the tool.

Diversity in your training, and find out what works best for you. I found when I first started boxing/ Muaythai skipping helped me stay lighter on my feet and find my ryrhym. Its also a great pre warm up. Maybe when you get to an elite level where you have your footwork, rythym worked out skipping might not be as necessary. I find for beginners and Intermediate it helps, because when we skip we skip on the balls of our feet rather than always staying flat footed. Dancers don't use agility ladders but we know they're great for foot work and speed. Find your own training method, otherwise if we all trained the same way we would fight the same way.

  • @evgeniantelo9697

Skipping rope does not improve footwork or movement per se, therefore Firas calls it junk training. Firas is missing one key point though, in boxing you have to be on your toes and this is what jumping rope does for you. It creates a habit and more importantly conditioning for your legs, calves and feet to stay on your toes. The quality of the footwork will come from the technique you're being taught, however, the conditioning of your legs and staying on your toes, changing from to foot to foot, laterally, going forward and backward comes from skipping rope. A defensive back doesn't stay on his toes, moving left to right or in circles or back and forth. It's a completely different type of footwork. Same with a figure skater or a dancer. So you can't compare the footwork of these athletes to the footwork of boxing because if they enter a boxing ring their footwork will not translate.

@@bobm3250 That's probably because your boxing coach was just taught to jump rope because that's what boxers did. He was never taught WHY boxers jump rope, so he never taught you. Imagine just being told to throw any kind of punch, as many as you could, while shadow boxing. Sure, you'll work up a sweat doing that, but it won't improve your boxing. In that case, you'd be taught shadow boxing as an EXERCISE, not shadow boxing as a BOXING DRILL. Which is what your coach did, but for jump rope.

Everyone has his/her own opinion but I think jump rope is too good to be ignored for a martial artist. Probably not for every martial artist but at least for boxers. It develops various things that you need to be a good boxer. Shoulder, forearm, toe, ankle and calf conditioning, core stability and cardio. I know he means that you should get the best out of your limited time. I agree. And that's WHY I do jump rope.

Love the whole series. but... I would offer basketball players especially point guards as having the best footwork. they have to cut left and right at various speeds, on top of dribbling through legs, accelerations and jumps for layups, dunks, blocks, shooting. Even if Id put both in a tie, I would still give it to the basketball player because the DB play lasts only about 4 secs while a basketball player has to deal with lactic acid buildup from switch from offense to defence and back without rest. The amount of movement a basketball player makes is simply more than a defensive back, back/forwards,side to side constantly while the DB runs backwards and then reacts by either hitting the brakes and sprinting if the ball is thrown under or runnig backwards and then turning to either side to run and follow the receiver. To put in a simple term, I think that Stephen Curry's footwork is more intricate than Richard Sherman's. But this of course is semantics. This is still good stuff.

I guess I've never really put much thought into jumping rope. I have always thought of it as a good warmup and a way to get loose and ready for sparring. I'd have to think about what he said. A lot of what boxers do they do simply because it's stuff handed down from past trainers 100 years or so ago but not necessarily because it's been proven to work. Back then they also believed in their fighters abstaining from sex 2 weeks before a fight. It's amazing how much mumbo jumbo and nonsense still exists in combat sport training.

Well, it IS a good warmup and cardio exercise. It's all about prioritizing the use of your time. If you like doing it, it certainly won't make you a worse fighter, or a less healthy person. It's all about whether or not it's the best use of your time in the gym.

If you're training for self-defence scenarios, yes. That'll make you a better target shooter, but even if you gain target shooting skills worthy of international competition, it won't teach you about shooting under stress in dynamic situations. Going to the range to work on your aim is almost an accessory exercise to self-defence shooting.
