I found the section around time 3:50 to be worded a little confusing. You say, "When the opponent is breaching the distance to get to you, you don't have to get to the spear because you die doing that." I understand this section, and the preceding sentences, to describe when the Volta Stabile is useful or not. However, as the use is to obtain horizontal power in setting aside an attack, this statement is a little confusing. However, I find this to be a very useful video as you demonstrate some nuance in your footwork that also applies to the other weapons in Fiore's system.

Ed Wells in this sentence i mean that you don’t have to go forward. If your volta move you too much toward the opponent can be dangerous. Instead if you move from side to side (left to right for instance) and you move lesser or not at all toward the opponent with your chest everything works better. I hope this will help! Bests

Hi Aaron, I don't know the smith who made the tip! One of my students have this spear since 10 year more or less, and we can't remember who made it! But the wooden part was carved and assembled by my friend.

Is there a reason why meyer shows a left hand forward grip on staff weapons and almost every other source shows right hand forward on the shaft?

  • @FedericoMalagutti

Judicial78 in general a left hand forward is used by many. Fiore uses it too, but simply show you also how to handle the weapon of the opposit side because if you don’t have stuff attached to the belt (scabbard) the RHF becomes viable too.

Oh, so the grip is more about not hitting things on your belt like daggers and swords in their scabbards?

Judicial78 with short pole weapons like staffs spears and halberds both hands forward have pross and cons, the spear a bit lesser because the dominant hand in the back can push thrusts in a better way but is still a viable option. So yes most of the time tradition also take in consideration the equipment of the warrior, like for the yari in Japan.
