Lyrics:
Every single night
I endure the flight
Of little wings of white-flamed
Butterflies in my brain
These ideas of mine
Percolate the mind
Trickle down the spine
Swarm the belly, swelling to a blaze
That's where the pain comes in
Like a second skeleton
Trying to fit beneath the skin
I can't fit the feelings in
Every single night's alight with my brain

Everyone talks about the lyrics. For me it's the wondrous melodies she effortlessly wrests from strange, discordant chord progressions. It's jazzy but not jazzy. It's punk but not punk. Like all my favourite music, the melodies of this song make feel things I can't express.

She's dope as hell. I hated her when i was a teenager when she 1st came out. Dont know how old you are but "Criminal" became such a hit that the media made her a golden girl. Until they realized she wasnt playing along like a typical "pop" star would.... so naturally they turned around to knock her off that pedestal. Then i listened to the whole Tidal album and ive been listening to it at least once a month for the past 26 years!!!

@@oBabybbyuuuuYou're right. There's symbolism in many of her videos. You can read their language.
People love to use the word “underrated” so loosely. Fiona has never been underrated, she has even won a Grammy. From what I know, her albums have all been highly acclaimed, and her current album is no exception. Just because she doesn’t get shoved into your face like Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, and all the leading mainstream musicians, doesn’t make her underrated. She chose the path of art and music, not fame, that’s why her music is still very well represented and relevant. Her concerts all do really well, and that’s why she continues to make music, because she likes the response her music gets. I would hate to see her get overrated, because that would possibly mean that she wouldn’t have much say in what her music should sound like and where her career should be going, she’s in total control and I’m very happy to see where her music is going and how it continues to evolve. 🖤

I see a lot of people comparing Tracy Bonham to Fiona Apple on these comments and I don't get it. I mean Bonham is okay and if you prefer her songs to Fiona's well that's just a matter of preference. Songwriting is another story. I invite anyone to tell me 1 Bonham song that is even in the same league as the lyrics of Fiona Apple. Fiona weaves language and words together like no other artist has in a generation. Listen to the words. Or even better, read them like a poem. "My derring-do allows me to Dance the rigadoon around you But by the time I'm close to you I lose my desideratum and now you so now you have it..."

One of the greatest of the 90s, and definitely these days not nearly as well known as she should be. She was an excellent musician and song writer. And I would have married her in a heart beat, completely my type. She may have ended up killing me in my sleep at some point, but I'd have been OK with that. Just a love bite.
To this day I have never heard such an amazingly eclectic artist who can string together the most unusual melodies with raw and real lyrics.
That extra spiraling piano riff in the background at 2:57-3:00 just blows me away, it doesn't NEED to be there but it adds soooo much depth, haunts my ears

God I remember sitting on the floor and learning her last “fast” chorus. And I can still nail it!!
my mom introduced me to you right as i was born. i’m 15 now it’s crazy how time flies. i unfortunately don’t know where my mother is but looking back at the music she listened to makes me think about her mind state and what she was going though as i was growing up.
It's fucking awesome how she slowly and meticulously cleans the lense and then immediately and instantly undoes the whole process
During the bridge she spends all that time carefully and meticulously clearing up the camera lens and as soon as she stops singing she instantly undoes all that work by messing it up again. I love that
That little touch of running the video a bit too fast or a bit too slow compared to the vocals always gives me shivers with this video.
Not only do I love her voice and lyrics, but I'm really into what I describe as clashing beats. It all seems to work kinda like freeform jazz. The music feels like it's a ride of its own.
What a charming woman and song. I'm happy to have found about this artist in my adulthood, better impact.

Actually there is a lot more to fiona apple than just her voice. She writes all of the music and lyrics herself. Unlike Beyonce and the stupid crap we see so much of today. She is the real deal. Complete, sincere, and competent. A true musician and never given enough credit for it. So many female musicians need to learn from her and not from fake pop music where the "singer" adds or merely changes one or two words of the song and is credited as a songwriter. Tell all your friends who Fiona Apple is and let it be seen what a real performer can do.

Man, she is talented and gorgeous!
Absolute masterpiece
I was lucky to see her in 1997 in Madison Wisconsin. I was 17, and I still have images of her on stage with the piano. Oh how I miss good music, and the best decade of my life!! 🎶
I've only just discovered her songs , how did I miss out on this brilliant singer ???
This is like the coolest pop song I've ever heard.
Masterpiece ✨
3:48 is When The Pawn...’s album cover photo.
0:45 Definitely my favorite Fiona verse. One of my favorite verses of any song! And the wicked smile she gives in the video. It's soul crushing! I LOVE IT!
Thank you local radio for playing this one song of hers... was mesmerised .

Gwen Stefani vibes ✨️
One of the most gifted songwriters of all time, period.
she's one of the realest songwriters ever
This song is timeless for me. It's on constant repeat.
The single handed most pure talent I've ever come across in all my years. So happy she fought through a lot to keep going. Love you Fiona!
one of the best songs / music videos of all times. every lyric is just so good. I must have listened to this a thousand times
She is a creative artist not for everyone .only the ones that know great talent. To bad for those that don't realize great talent.your missing out on masterful pieces of creativity.
Love that beat, then that half time drop. Rock on girl!

Fiona is incredible.
My three-year-old son is so inspired by Fiona, he says: she sings so fast, but she can't sneeze!.. because she sings...

My daughter was obsessed with Fiona Apple when she was 3. 😊 Her favorite song was Extraordinary Machine.

@@maitime8712 it so cute because though Extraordinary Machine is a melodical song its still complicated with cords
This was so amazing to hear on the radio. It really stood apart from everything else being played. I still remember this being in heavy rotation around Halloween 1999...& then seemingly disappeared almost overnight.

This is the perfect combination of an amazing song with a video that matches it. I could watch this for days.
Love this song so much. It's one of my favorite songs of hers. But I love almost all of her songs.
