Finnegans Garage Ep.47: 700hp Square Body Chevy Cummins 12 Valve Swap Part 1

My 1973 Chevy C30 Crew Cab Dually is unique for several reasons; first off, it appeared on several episodes of Roadkill. It's also unique because its a 3+3 Crew Cab fitted with an aftermarket ramp in place of the original truck bed by a company called Hodges Custom Haulers in Benton, Kentucky. Lastly, with the powerhouse 454ci V8 engine, TH400 three-speed automatic transmission and 4.11 gears in the rear axle, this truck has achieved a whopping 6 mpg when towing. It also won't break 45 mph going up a 6 percent grade and it tends to overheat. In short, as much as I love this truck it's gotta change its ways.
Enter the guys from Power Driven Diesel and Diesel Conversion Specialists. After searching high and low for 2wd Square Body Chevy truck conversion diesel swap parts and noodling the pros and cons of various diesel engines and suitable transmissions, I decided to use a set of DCS engine mounts to swap in a 12 Valve Cummins inline six-cylinder diesel engine and then build my own mount for a 47RH automatic overdrive transmission.
I also brought in a couple of experts from Power Driven Diesel to hop up my used Cummins before we stuffed it into the Ramp Truck. Together we o-ringed the engine block, changed the head gasket, upgraded the valve springs and pushrods, re-timed the injection pump, swapped in larger fuel injectors, fixed the dreaded death pin inside the timing cover, and installed a beefy new transmission. Did I mention we also installed a compound set of turbos that will make 60-plus psi of boost and over 650 hp??
Now it is possible to installed the Cummins 12V into '73-
'87 Chevy trucks (and '73-'91 Suburbans) without cutting the firewall if you move the crossmember and engine mounts, unbolt the hood, replace the stock power brake booster with a hydroboost unit, and drop the engine straight down from the sky without the transmission bolted to it. You also have to forgo the original engine-driven fan and install an electric unit and hope for the best. I wanted to make servicing the truck easier and maximize the efficiency of the cooling system so I chose to leave the factory mounting points intact, keep the factory radiator, shroud and fan from my Dodge donor truck, and instead I cut open the firewall and transmission tunnel to make the engine, trans and exhaust piping fit. Not everyone will go this route but it was the right one for me.
In Part 1 we'll cover the mods and cutting of the truck. Later on in Part 2 we'll go over make the truck function again and then road test the beast. Thanks for watching. If you'd like more info and videos about cool swap parts and upgrades then please visit

"So what did we learn from all of this? Basically, watch your mouth on the Internet, and don't get involved with reality TV. People ask us all the time, why Roadkill doesn't show up on a cable network. And this is why, here on the web, we are totally in charge of our own destiny and our own show. No lawyers, no contracts, no private planes, no hidden clauses and no faking it." - David Freiburger

David.... maybe....idk, i honestly just think you guys disagree on the direction RK/MT went... (aka, making this channel in the first place, and IIRC, around a set of events that happened) and ill leave it at that the whole thing is just shitty for everyone involved....you 2 and the viewers..... who gives a shit about the money..... of course i can spend 3 or 5 or whatever bucks a month ITS ABOUT THE PRINCIPAL... MAN! - The Dude just having to go to a different website is fucking annoying..... i dont watch TV....i watch youtube.... do the suits think we only watch car stuff? i gotta find out the top 10 reasons the earth is flat.... ya dont say "RK will always be on youtube for free"..... and then stop that and then say "fuck you, pay me"...... why do i feel a split coming?

This was one of the most comprehensive and all-in-one videos I've seen on modifying the 12V! Excellent work Mike! I pulled the cab mount bolts and jacked the cab up several inches on the 1994 doner I pulled my Cummins out of and still bent the valve covers cover thing when pulling it out. I broke my dyno at around 350HP without bolt-ons. Just timing, fuel pressure, and injection pump mods. The gov springs was the what made the biggest difference.

Wrong place to complain, you have no control over this. Please keep on keepin on with what you do. And a P.S. This upgrade in this video with multiple cameras, better quality in both production and video, and the awesome choice of background music. i have no issues with roadkill changing platforms i sub to MTOD because i enjoy the shows, i enjoy the great content, the cost for the sub is worth the quality content. Content cost money, what you and David do costs money its not free, what some fans do not understand is the actual cost of production, they see a 30min show and do not understand what it took in time and support to film one show. I do not mind sponsors as long as they do not interfere with content. I hope all contracts with the sponsors say they have no control of content for their plugs, would be smart for creators, such as yourself. Great work on Finnegan's Garage looking forward to Ep.48 been a fan from Ep.1 hope to meet you one day! I'll come up and say "hi Guys im Possom, great show" i do not post often, but when i do its always support and thanks for the content. :)

opossom1968 yes i could understand that. But 90% of us fans were watching it because it was real, not faked like tv. But now theyve fully sold out and betrayed what they were supposed to be which was a relateable internet show. Plus a lot of us are poor

its not going to turn into a scripted tv-show, its still going to be two guys doing stupid stuff while having the time of their life, if i remember right they just figured they had to try making some content out of all the trips and fun ideas they had, and thats still what theyre gonna keep on doing. and its not their fault that motortrend got bought, they might be some big faces in the company, but they dont make the decisions. + i dont get what you mean with sellout, they have to keep the show going somehow, and they are not getting limitations from their sponsors ++ you can still watch the show for free

Well said, Possom. I think many of the people complaining about MTOD don't realize Finnegan, Freiburger, and the rest of the hosts and crew make their living from the videos. Moving the videos to their own website allows them to reap the full benefits of the ads without having to go through the middle man(KZread). I've been a subscriber to MTOD from the beginning, and I will continue, because I want to support the hosts and crew as well as the sponsors that support them.
