Shocked to hear him say they used an AT2020. I had a client that bought one back in 2010 and couldn't believe how strident and just lack luster it was. Maybe they've improved the design but I was shocked as I've used LOTS of ATs, starting with an AT4033 that we bought from Sarah McLachlan, through AT4050s and 4051b's on piano. Liked them all but the 2020 which I thought was pretty poor. I guess Billie could sing through a MXL and still sound good.

Besides that, I think many people forget or don’t want to acknowledge that quiet singing in tune is in fact very hard and at times harder than mid range belting. In the end, it depends on who & what you're recording. Particularly when it comes to styles of music. Michael Jackson famously used an SM7b., though it doesn't mean it will work for every vocalist. @@mikel5163 100%, even Finneas says you can do a lot with cheaper stuff (mainly talking about plugins). I've actually made a few tracks using guitar hero microphones, and I have cheaper mics. I prefer to take advantage of the potential of mics and the room i'm in before thinking about getting better microphones
