Good question, we crack it to allow lactic acid bacteria grow quickly, and within a matter of days the pH drops really low, so nothing else will grow in the cracked corn

Great content. Really nice to see how the harvest works in an other corner of the world. But i don't get it. I understand what wet corn is but why you dont use the whole plant? A bit earlier when the plant got around 32% to 35% dry mass it makes a wonderfull silage. Called GPS in Germany ( whole plant silage). Got 66% energy out of the corn and 34% energie out of the plant. Or is it a thing of energy density in the feeding?

  • @SonneFarms

We pack it in there to its pH level lowers and the quality stays good. Then it is easy to feed since it is right there in the pit and we dont have to pull it out of the grain bin. Also since it is cracked, it is easier for the cattle to break it down.

  • @SonneFarms

Good question. I understand that there is potentially more stress on the equipment and also the bucket could fall down without warning. We do this sometimes because we are in tight quarters and lifting it up gets it out of the way. But in this case at 6:02, there is no reason why the bucket was in there air, I probably should have lowered it
