Finishing Cherry, Methods and Tips with Tom McLaughlin

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

EPISODE #45: American Cherry is right alongside walnut when it comes to our most iconic native species. The color is a rich reddish-orange brown that deepens to a rich patina over time. But finishing cherry can be tricky...or very simple. In this episode I share my favorite methods and techniques for getting the best results and enhancing the natural beauty of this classic hardwood. I know this video is about Cherry but I used that same gel stain to refinish an oak sideboard/buffet and it looks amazing. Only thing I did different was wet the wood with mineral spirits before wiping on the gel stain.

    I keep a spray bottle with 1:1 water and 91% alcohol handy for raising grain. Mist it all over and it’s fully evaporated and dry in seconds instead of an hour! Every little bit helps to cut down on finish waiting times. Great show, thanks for sharing!

    Thanks for your excellent info, Tom. Used shellac recently on a picture frame project, where I used some figured sapele veneer. It was pretty blotchy in my tests with oil based finishes (poly or danish oil). Tried shellac, based on your video, and got really nice results.

    Fun as always. The shellac washcoat is a handy tip. An easy way to quickly enrich the color of a cherry piece is to put it outside on a sunny day; it'll visibly darken(oxidize) in a few hours.

    Thanks Ken, glad you enjoyed it! I have tried that sun method with Cherry but found it didn’t yield the same quality of color that the slower process did. Something about the suns rays seemed to have a “gray” color cast to the darkening...but I could be wrong in my assessment 😎 Thanks!

    Thank you for your video. My husband and I purchased a custom cherry fireplace mantle surround. We plan on finishing it ourselves, but have no woodworking experience. I’ve looked online at various articles and learned 3 ways to finish it. One was to wipe on tung oil that you featured, but it said sometimes it can absorb unevenly. Another was a spray on film finish, using shellac then polyurethane. Finally, a shellac and glaze finish, starting with a dewaxed shellac and glazing it with burnt umber artists oil color and liquid glazing . Which do you recommend for a mantle?

    I just found your channel and I've subscribed. I had a question -- Danish Oil vs Waterlox, does the Cherry darken naturally overtime with both finishes?

  • @EpicWoodworking

    @EpicWoodworking

    3 жыл бұрын

    Glad you found me and connected 👍 Yes, the cherry does appear to darken equally overtime...pretty consistent across all oil varnish based finishes. However the Waterlox, being a Tung oil based oil varnish, will provide significantly greater protection against water so I would recommend using that on horizontal surfaces that may have a glass set down on them. And Waterlox is compatible with Danish oil so it can be the top coat over Danish oil if you want to save a little money on the finish. Hope that helps, see you on the stream!

  • @EpicWoodworking

    @EpicWoodworking

    Yes, that’s one of the great things about using tung oil. I would clean it down with mineral spirits (paint thinner) and steel wool first just to remove any potential contaminants. Then just wipe on another coat👍

    Hi. I was referred to you from a post on Fine Woodworking. I have a few questions about a cherry buffet top that I'm refinishing, if you could help me? First Q is: there was old water damage on the left corner area with a hole, and nearby 2-3 very black raised strips about 1/8" high and 4 inches long. Very black and hard. Surprisingly I was able to get those flattened nicely. However, with the hole, I made the mistake of filling it with a mixture of the sanded top residue and glue and it turned out black, due to the color of the stain. It still has a shallow indentation that I can fill with something, but I don't know what? And the black strips are very noticeable - I'd like to hopefully lighten them somehow (wood bleach?) so they don't stand out so much. That whole area, about 6x6 inches, will stick out like a sore thumb if left as-is. There might not be anything to fix that, or even make it less noticeable, but do you know of any possibilities? Don't see an option to attach a picture for you. One other question after this, if you don't mind. Thank you so very much. BTW, I've looked all over the internet and talked to local people and can't find an answer to my question(s).

    Hi, sounds like you have a nice and challenging project on your hands. It’s naturally difficult to diagnose precisely how to advise you with the project since there are quite a few variables and unknowns, even if I were working on the table myself. But to your question in removing black stains likely caused by water, standard water rings are usually removable with Oxalic acid, a mild form of wood bleach. From the sounds of the black strips it may be too much for oxalic acid, and given the strips were raised it sounds like a stain and wet area that was perhaps more severe. But still, it’s worth trying to apply the Oxalic acid to lighten the stain at least. Just be careful to follow the instructions for use and safety with the Oxalic acid…especially don’t breathe the dust of it. Stronger two part bleach may work but that usually takes out all the color of the wood too and you will need to skillfully add back and blend color to hide the restoration. The strips may be a veneer layer as well. Another approach is to sand off the stain, but that sounds like that might not be possible. And then you could also patch the stain area with new wood or veneer, blending color to match and hide. But this can be tricky and difficult to hide the repaired area. Sometimes the best alternative is to lighten the area as much as possible, tone on the area with color and apply some type of color tone over the entire top to blend and best create a uniformity to the tops appearance. I hope that helps a bit. I am curious where it was on Fine Woodworking you found me or was directed to me? All the best to you and your project! 👍

    Hello. Really appreciate your content! I can't seem to find the JE Mosers medium yellow maple. Do you have a recommendation for a comparable analine dye from WD lockwood or others?

  • @EpicWoodworking

    @EpicWoodworking

    3 ай бұрын

    I don’t know their official names that would match but these dye stains are quite forgiving and usually close enough. I would look for something titled like an “antique maple.” Hope that helps! 👍😎

    Another great one. Question You mentioned 1 of 3 options for aniline dyes one being for oil. Is tongue oil tintable with aniline dyes?

  • @EpicWoodworking

    @EpicWoodworking

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Ben! Yes, Tung oil is tintable with “oil soluble” aniline dyes. Best to pre-dissolve the dye in minerals spirits before adding to the tung oil. This will of course thin the tung oil a bit but’s that no problem, I typically dilute the tung oil (Waterlox) 10 - 20% anyway which makes it even easier to work with. Hope that helps! 👍😎

    This was the most informative video I've found on finishing Cherry. Thank-you! Did you seal the cherry tray before Waterlox?

  • @EpicWoodworking

    @EpicWoodworking

    4 жыл бұрын

    If the Cherry appears the type of figure that will “blotch” I will seal it first with a 1 1/2 lb cut of wax-free Shellac. But the tray Cherry was nice veneer on the panel and quartersawn for the sides so I went directly with the Waterlox onto the Cherry for the initial coat with great results. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for the compliment and for watching! All the best, Tom
