I’ve made many Musselburgh hats…. Not because they’ve gone wrong but because I just love making them ! I made one for my husband and he loved it, my brother tried it on as I was making it…he loved it too… and my wheels started turning. I have 5 living brothers and 5 grand children… in January I began knitting for next Christmas. … still enjoy knitting them. Always planning the next…

I'm so sorry for your hat! To answer the question, yes I've knit a musselburgh hat for my husband. It turned out perfect on the first try. I measured the gauge where the pattern says to do it and followed the instructions. Overall, my gauge turned out a bit tighter than what I'd measured at the beginning but my husband doesn't have hair so he loves a snug fit. I used non-superwash yarns held together so I maybe that helped keeping things tight. For me, that pattern worked really well.

Thank you so much for your input. That’s really interesting your gauge ended up tighter as you went on. I’m definitely trying again ☺️

It's too bad about the hat sizing. I think this speaks to the importance of checking gauge. Once you measure that (per pattern instructions), it's simple to determine which size is right. I've made a dozen Musselburghs and they've all come out great (despite the fact that I incorporated ribbing, stripes and different yarn weights). It's a very customizable pattern and well worth the price. (IMO 😊)

Nice to see you again Julie Anne. I love that you gave free-motion quilting a try for yourself. I’m still debating on whether or not I want to send my “Broken Dishes” quilt to my quilter or if I want to hand quilt it with utility stitching. It has more of a shabby chic style with the Promenade fabrics I used so I’m thinking I’ll hand quilt. One tip I’d like to share with you on your piecing… Make your blocks slightly larger than needed then before you piece the blocks together, go back and square each block up. That way they will go together perfectly and you wont struggle to get everything to line up. It’s a little more work up front but makes life so much easier in the end. I personally love using Lori Holt’s “Trim It” rulers, especially when working with pin wheel squares. They have a 1/4” seam allowance all the way around instead of a 1/2 seam on 2 sides. Thank you for sharing your quilting journey along with your knitting. I enjoy them both. Hugs 🤗

I have made two Musselburgh hats! I do really enjoy the pattern but where I get hung up is, both times I needed extra yarn at the end. It made me sad cuz everyone else seems to be able to make one in just one skein, and it's for that purpose! But I always seem to need a little extra and idk why 😢 it drives me crazy

Oh gosh no!! How much extra yarn did you need?? I wonder if a sock set would do? (Extra 20g)

I run tight on yarn too… so now I’m using my kitchen scale to keep weighing what’s left starting my decrease when I have the same or a tiny bit more than it took for my increase, in the beginning.

Beautiful Quilts! 😍😍😍Since the hat is doubled, would a single layer seem looser but two layers more fitted? Sometimes it’s hard to know whether to trust a designer or use the pattern as a recipe suggestion 😉 I quilted before I learned to knit, after my first two machine quilts i decided I liked machine piecing and hand quilting better 😅

Hi Julie…congrats on the cute quilt…free motion is fun but so much easier on a long arm. I’m a long time quilter and I’m worried that the peach you chose for the “peaks” will get lost against your beige background fabric.🤷‍♀️…just something to consider. I’m also a knitting addict and I own many of your patterns….thank you for sharing your talent!!!

For Me the Musselburg hat took a few tries to start. i am new to the pattern and it took me a lot of reading it to figure out what the charts where and such. what i am not liking about it is the M1L/R... i dont know if it is because im not as familiar with them but i have holes in my hat now.... i am not ripping it back out but if i do another i might change to a different increase.... or maybe i am doing things wrong. ???

  • @TwinStitchesDesigns

If you’re doing the M1R/L correctly you shouldn’t be getting any holes. I would double check to make sure you picking up the stitches correctly

I had trouble with gauge on the cast on. So I started after the increases, on a provisional cast on, then came back and did the end the same as the other end!

  • @carriemarman9482

I never made the hat as well, couldn’t get the correct cast on method, so frustrating, I have found the hat that is kind of like it “Double thick hat” by Kareema Ali.. it’s started in the middle of the hat with a provincial cast on.. and I like it a lot , it fits really well…. And it’s double like the musselbourgh.

I was a quilter before I became a knitter. I love making quilt tops, but I don't love the quilting. Your quilts are beautiful. I would suggest that you ask someone at your quilting class if they think you have enough quilting (too much space without quilting). The only reason I say that is because the batting in my very first quilt (which lives on my couch and gets washed a couple times a month) didn't stay in place and turned into little wads of batting inside the quilt. Now the quilt is basically two layers of fabric with no real layer of batting. I would hate for that to happen to your hard work. Just a suggestion. Also, I have made two Musselburgh hats. They are not super fun to knit and drag on. The end result is cute, but I won't be making another one anytime soon.

Thank you so much for your tips!! I do agree there’s not enough quilting. That’s one of the main reasons I’m bringing them to get professionally done. I broke two needles trying to do this one 😂
