Fingerstyle Major Chord Scale Relations - Folk Guitar Lesson - JustinGuitar [FO-104]
In Guitar Lesson #5 in the Folk Fingerstyle Module for intermediate players we check out the relationship between our open major chords and major scale in the Key of C. This is a really great way to start learning chord melody playing and will help you see the way a "key" works with the diatonic chords and the major scale. Works in Folk of course but the concept moves into the jazz and pop melody styles.

i already know all this and i still watch. love this guy!
Thanks Justin , another eye opener lesson ,giving novice players a chance to explore and see the possibilities ,splendid .
Justin you are the best thanks for knowing you
You were born to teach Justin! Great ideas. I love every bit of it. Off to practice!
God, you're such a help to a brotha who cant afford lessons. Know that all my heart is in this thank you man.
Lovely as always. Your lessons make me understand why people would take the time to learn to play.
You're such a great teacher! THANK YOU
Justin -- I can't thank you enough for this. I've never bothered learning scales and instead relied on (and mostly failed spectacularly at) tabs. This has completely changed my perspective on guitar, and I'm finally getting to the next leve. Your videos are superb!
6:45 gave me some reeaal inspiration
Very cool tip on the fingering of the scale while holding the chord. Ready for a campfire jam.
God bless you Justin. Love you man.
Such a legend
great. Its lovely to see how much you love the guitar ,even in a simple lesson
thanx man ,,, very usefull and i best practice ...
Thanks! Fingerstyle has always been something I've wanted to try, and these lessons are really helping! Following every week!
I've been practicing this so far with an alternating bass while running the scale from high G to the open G and back. I can do so in C, G, and Am pretty well. Still working on the F. I'm looking forward to being able to play something like the experimental bits you showed for C and G here. I think for now I should probably practice running your scale patterns (3rds, 4 in a row, etc) with the alternating bass. Can't wait to see the next installment in this series! :)
Your videos are amazing! No one teaches like you. Cheers from Brasil
Simply excellent 👍 👌 thanks 😊
great lesson really enjoyed it, thanks for doing what you continue to do. your half the reason im in a band.
Dude i've progresed so much in just a few weeks watching UR vids thanks a lot man but to be frank i've combined this with all-guitar-chords site it's awesome for learning music theory. Still your're making me more confident as a guitar player and i'm having more fun just practicing finger streching or other dreded exercises just because i see progress every day and what is more important it corelates with playing songs, it's just easier to play them...THX
recommend people wanting to practice this to learn "Down in the valley" by "the head and the heart". :)
Great lesson Justin, keep 'em coming. I love watching your vids.
awesome
NIce and very entertaining lessons. Thanks for sharing. :) Keep up the good work!!
Great lesson, thanks Justin!
Thank you very much sir. Great lesson.
Great class. Thanks for sharing.
WOW,,,Sounds great, thanks
God damn. This is super helpful. Great technique. THANK YOU.
Awesome!
These are great!
Just think E Phrygain shape whilst your playing, this lesson is great such and obvious thing, but i've never thought about it , big up justin!
The scale actually starts on the A string, third fret (C). The notes lower than the starting C are from the next octave down, and the scale just continues into another octave as you get higher-pitched (the octave started on A string third fret C ends on the B string open, it then starts the next octave on B string first fret). I hope this makes sense and helps. :)
4:46 really really really impressive!
Always interesting and challenging!
Haha ok I commented before watching the whole video... BUT.. around seven minutes. I just started laughing because of how awesome this is. Again thank you! This is exactly what I needed.
That helped a lot! Thanks! :)
Wow... This was very helpful for figuring out how to play 'Tuolumme' by Eddie Vedder :D
its realy helpful
Great lessons, thanks. I've gone from being reluctant to even try fingerpicking to proficient at the basic patterns inside a few days thanks to your videos. Also, how about a John Prine song or two? It's fun watching him because he tends to use his thumb and index finger only, yet it still sounds very intricate :) Thanks again.
@alguira he was playing the C major scale, which is also the A Aeolian scale.
Wow this was insightful. Would recommend learning 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You' by Led Zeppelin along with this style module. Has some of the embelisments demonstrated here and Justin has a tutorial on that song. Was quite suprised how fast I got that song down with your help :-)
I would like to request run for home by Lindisfarne.
Hi The best !!!
It's available on his site. justinguitar there's a link in the description. The ebook he mentions is very good and designed to be easy for beginners to understand.
4:41 1 chord +melody
tenkiu
i'll give it a like because i feel like i don't do it nearly enough
@TheLolthazun To me it matters, I like to learn as much theory as I can.
Thanks so much Justin..! Does each of those fingerings from the scale played with the chord make a different kind of chord or chord name..?
please teach usch that part at 06:44 a little bit more. I know you're explaining the C major scale here. But it also sound great as a folk song in G
You're playing a C major scale while playing chords in the key of C. C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am and B are all chords in the key of C. All of the notes found in these chords are from a C major scale, and as such, go together. This is why you're playing a C major scale while making C, G and F chords.
What about right hand 🖐️.....have to use same 1 2 3 fingers or?
Was looking out to see what your right hand was doing. Kindly open another window for that. Thanks loads!
I know you said you really couldn't answer any questions but maybe somebody else might know when you play the scale do you stick to the one string per finger or do you use the thumb and forefinger like a classical player?
@Slimboyfat1979 does the chord name really matter? it sounds nice.
1:11 starts the notes
Would there be any chance of getting a few pointers on the picking ? I am getting to grips with the notes under the chord but only when I use a pick....just a few tips from anybody to guide me on the right hand would be greatly received and appreciated...
hi Justin. I don't understand why we are playing the notes of chord C while we we are holding chords in the shape of G and F ( in your second and third example respectively) . Can u give me a song as an example where this thing is used. thank you very much
My fingers are too long to hold down those two strings with my pointer. It really strains my hand. Any advice?
Justin, aint the first scale you play an E Aeolian? or im i wrong¿?
what's a good guitar to get when starting folk guitar?

Anything Chet Atkins. LOL May be a little advanced but that is what you'll want to get into. Music done by Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, and Tommy Emmanuel. But ya Dust in the Wind does get you into it. Depends on how new you are to fingerpicking, that is the real challenge getting started and progressing.

Try Freight Train by Elizabeth Cotten! Really simple to learn, but a great song!
is that a shroom on your arm?
God?
folk music is about feel and rawness. Thia guy doesnt have that. Hes teaching you how to play in a box. If you want to learn how to play folk music go find some dylan tabs and learn those.
