On a course in London many years ago I personally experienced Master Higaonna's throat grip. Honestly, it was like being clamped in a steel vice. I was unable to move and in the real world any attempt to escape would mean immediate removal of my windpipe from my neck. Awesome karate man - the genuine article and a real gentleman.

In old Shaolin, grappling/gripping w/ hands "literally" is part of the basics. Somehow after the Qing Dynasty collapse, much of the original Shaolin basics ended up in Okinawa. I am a firm believer of the old stories re men's flesh getting torn out by another skilled person's iron grip, or having one's wrist snapped broken by another's strength....

Of course, they are taught in a very Japanese/Okinawan way.

I Had the great honour to train under higowana sensay in training camp back in Israel 20 years a go. I Was training okinawa Karate for 5 years. Most effective body conditioning, my four arms are still solid like iron even with 20 years passed and I am over 40 now. One more story about higuana sensay , When he came to train in our dojo to hit the makiwara , he completely broke the makiwara , And those who don’t know what it is the makiwara is basically a punching device constructed with heavy iron frame bolted to a wall and flexibel wooden beam. The wood was fine , but the iron frame was split open completely after his punches. Scary amount of power! Thank you for your wisdoms and teachings Higuwana sensay. 🙏🏻

Actually you can do this without supervision. It's a matter of consistency or genetics. I think average time for honing good strong fingers is about 6-8months. But monster fingers take about a year or years of consistent training. Some masters say your hand WILL get deformed from doing it. It's all about what works for you and your body in honing it to its fullest potential. I've done the training to just hone my hand trapping and grip. But i probably could throw a ippon nukite in someones eye or throat. My fingers are relatively thin so im pretty sure most can hone to my lvl. What i do is support half my body weight on my fingers and wait. Till the tension is too much. You can do this in push up stance or bent down. Then you can work on grip strength if you have a pull up bar or weight. Tendons are way slower to build than muscle so take you time and be patient. Respect to this master for his patience in his art!
