You use the Pythagorean theorem meaning you use a squared plus b squared equals c squared and then if you are missing the hypotenuse then you leave c squared and fill in the others with numbers but if it’s any of the other side lengths then just leave that and the you find the square of the two extra numbers and then subtract the larger one from the other and you get the missing side length

How do we answer this without a calculator in an exams? Isnt there any other alternative way to calculate it? For a 10 year old kid?

At 10 yrs old they should keep the area of a square in this situation something easy to calculate the square root of with no calculator. For example, a square with an area of 100 can be guessed that the sides must each be 10. So this kind of question can be made possible for younger students to solve as well!

The only way we can calculate the area is if it is a square. Then all sides will be the same. If it is a rectangle with a length and a width it won't be possible to find the area without the width given!

If it is a square it would be (x+1)(x+1) to find the area. And then you could watch the video about multiplying to binomials as I mentioned above.
