When you see a bible that's falling apart from use, it usually means the person it belongs to isn't falling apart.

I got a bible at an estate sale 3 weeks ago because it was engraved and the lady had the same last name as me. When I opened it up and saw all the notes on nearly every page and how worn it was with pages falling our and tape holding it together I felt God doing something in me. God used her testimony through those pages to deliver me out of atheism. This past week I took my family to church and they loved it. I'm hoping to be baptized soon and I have my 9 year old signed up to 3 vacation bible schools this summer.

I have had a number of bibles over the last 20yrs, my most used are one of those early 2000s magnetic closer “backpacking” NIV bibles for my entire AWANA Citation career (3-12 grade), and an ESV journaling bible that I adore and use as my everyday/study Bible. I use multiple versions including interlinear when studying at home, but ESV is my happy place for reading & Sunday use.

Years ago a friend gave me a MacArthur Study Bible in NKJV that I love. He picked it up from a used bookstore, but I don’t mind. I’ve read it cover-to-cover twice, and various books and passages multiple times. I recently picked up a Sovereign Series, personal size reference Bible in NKJV on the cheap. I love it. It seems a shame to mark on it, but I can’t help it; I have to interact with the text. I also just picked up a thin line ESV with minimal references (nearly none) that I am greatly enjoying. I can’t put it down!

I love the Journal the Word large print Bible... pretty much goes every where with me. Has 2" margins. Large print so there is room even between each line to make small notes. It is verse by verse and is on cream paper... but I love the space it has in it for notes. Thicker paper too.

Great journey! Very interesting. Thanks for sharing it! I'm just a layperson, not a preacher or teacher, so I don't have the same needs, but still I'm looking for a premium Bible. Currently I'm between the Crossway Heirloom Heritage ESV vs. the Schuyler Treveris ESV. Both look like beautiful Bibles. Both printed and bounded by Royal Jongbloed. I want it primarily to read, hence I don't care as much about things like cross references, but I do care about single column paragraph format. Just hard to decide between the Heritage and the Treveris! :)

I can so relate to your quest for the “perfect for me” Bible. Although I have numerous Bibles and different translations, I’ve used the NASB since the 1980’s and all through Bible college. I was very excited about the LSB. I purchased the first edition LSB handy size in blue goatskin (my first premium Bible). It’s so beautiful that I don’t want to write in it or carry it anywhere. So I ordered the LSB wide margin large print in cowhide to be my new study Bible that I will fill with markings and notes. My rebound NASB that I’ve been using has over 25 years of notes and markings in it. I feel like I’m abandoning an ancient manuscript. Lol. So my quandary…keep the expensive handy size Bible as a reader, or sell it. :/

I use the ESV study bible, as well as an NIV and KJ study bibles. Recently added a CSB study bible, but these tomes are just too heavy to haul to church or the cottage so I have a normal NKJ without notes just for easy reading, but when I'm out and about during the day I have a small pocket new testament incase I need it. I went to seminary back in 1992, and have worn out several bibles over the years travelling to Africa and Europe, but I can never throw them out. Once a bible has too many battle scars, I retire it in a place of honour on my bookshelf.

I have 4,000 Bible references that I have categorised into about 450+ topics, and typed some 90,000 words of commentary. One day I’m going to export my notes and print and bind into a physical copy.

I have that Holman Handcrafted CSB Verse-by-Verse. And while I go to the ESV for my Bible study prep, sometimes I use the CSB one just because of its formatting. It is a very, very pleasant experience. Unfortunately, if you want something comparable for the ESV, you have to go to the Cambridge Topaz for 3X the price. 3:10 - YES! I cannot for the life of me figure out why they crammed the gutter text so far into the spine! EDIT: I just wrote Crossway's marketing. I asked them about the prospects of a double-column ESV Verse-by-Verse reference Bible with 7/8" gutter margins, which is what our handcrafted CSBs have.

But now I think I might be using the Horween Omega for my use at the church but don’t mark in Bible. And I may start using the Horween Heritage as my daily daily carry/reader/and might mark in that Bible. I really just want to use one of the Horweens as a daily carry so it will build character and be something really special. But kudos to you, you have very good taste in Bibles and I agree with you that my LSB will be for study and stay nice for sure.

@@nobodyspecial1852 There is, now, an ESV Catholic Edition which I think is probably the best available for the text but as far as bindings are concerned it seems that a Protestant ESV with Apocrypha will allow for leather of some kind. $245 is expensive, but if you really want a fancy binding that is the sort of price you will pay. I strongly disagree with the idea of the perfect Bible being the one that's in your "cart". Don't be addicted to always buying the "better", "newer" Bible. God's word being precious does not depend on what material/layout it comes in. Truth be told: the only "perfect" Bible is the one that's in your "heart"... the one that you use and isn't gathering dust on your bookshelf because it's been replaced every year or so. So sad when the materialistic/consumeristic desire to always have the best/newest/more improved 'whatever-it-is' creeps into our walk of faith. BTW: I speak from experience and am so relieved that God freed me from the addiction of premium-Bible-buying. There's nothing wrong with getting a really good quality one that lasts, or even having loads of different versions to help you...just don't lose sight of where the eternal value of the word of God is placed. Every one of these premium Bibles listed in the video could last you decades, if not a lifetime, of use. Why is it that none of these are just not quite good enough? The desire to keep buying the newest one and wish "if only it was more like this or more like that" is not a holy/Godly one. Much love and encouragement to you brother (Colossians 3:2)

I don't think that his comment was meant to be taken literally. Many of us love to look at different Bibles and examine their characteristics closely. Those characteristics begin to grow on us and over time we get a greater sense of how we prefer God's word to be laid out in front of us. To the man on the video, it is clear you love God and His Word. And I trust you also loves the people whom you serve. Keep up your passion for Christ and may He richly bless you and the fruit of your ministry.

Your testimony has touched me. I have so many bibles now, although I’m not trying to get a premium bible, I just want good study bibles. I have a severe student study Bible, but I do want the actual study Bible. That’s the only reason I may change bibles. Personally I just make sure I have a sword everywhere.

Well, goatskin leather helps the Bible to lay flat. This makes it easier to work with when table-reading. And the wider gutter margins mean that my head can be over my notepad instead of having to be directly over the Bible. These are two things the Holman Handcrafted CSB Verse-by-Verse got completely right. Yes, there are some weird font spacing issues here and there, and two typos that I've found so far, but those don't render the Bible difficult to use, whereas the crammed gutter margins of the ESV Verse-by-Verse do. That Bible is an atypically weak entry in Crossway's lineup and, moreover, it's the only two-column verse-by-verse offering they have. As for cost-effective covers, their Trutone is...mediocre when it comes to mimicking real leather. Crossway could perhaps learn something from Holman's Leathertouch polymer. My purchases reveal that it matches pigskin leather for flexibility and *almost* matches goatskin. And going by the prices of each, it is even cheaper than Trutone.

I'm wanting to get 2 bibles for my 2 sons as their current ones are 'teenage' editions and they're now young adults. I grew up with NIV and my current bible is NIV, but I've been advised to look at ESV by various people I respect. What lead you to the ESV as opposed to all the other translations available?

  • @Back2theWord

There are quite a few places to learn about the many positives of the ESV. For the format. I would suggest looking at the ESV Concise Study Bible for your sons, or a version of the ESV thinline (Crossway has quite a few options) As for why… The ESV is very readable and keeps many biblical terms NKJV and KJV people appreciate. The ESV is well researched and has some of the best translations of Hebrew poetry in modern translations (this is where it has a huge advantage over the NIV). Also, the ESV is very preachable in that many congregations can have it read and preached from without needing to spend too much time re-translating or explaining the word choices of the translation on the fly. Also, it has so many good resources around the translation available. Those are just a few of my reasons why I have landed on the ESV as my translation.

    1) You have great teeth! Hopefully they're as healthy as they are attractive. 2) I still have my little black zippered KJV that I got in kindergarten over 60 years ago. I took at a red ballpoint at some point and colored the lips of the Madonna with Christ in the frontispiece. 3) I grew up as a Presbyterian with KJV and RSV, and a Schuyler RSV with Apocrypha is still a staple for me; I love the quality of their Bibles. 4) I detest vanity Bibles like the MacArthur, the Ryrie, the Scofield, and others of that ilk. If theologians or preachers want to interpret and share their particularly biases with others, I think they should be in separate volumes (like the excellent J. Vernon McGee series). 5) ESV is amazing; I never liked the NRSV when it came out, too mooshy for me. From the first time I saw the ESV it was a fit, and still is. It's my daily reader. 6) I am now Roman Catholic, where the path to the priesthood is normally about 10 years. Young priests will decide whether to become ordered priests or diocesan priests, whether to serve God as a pastor or in some other capacity, such as a teaching or medical worker. For your faith journey, is there an equivalent to our ordered priests? 7) I have 'marking' Bibles and non-marking Bibles. I don't require markings to learn, I guess I'm blessed in that way. 8) Best wishes from the Houston-Galveston area!

LOL 😆 🤣 ...Here's my personal conspiracy theory . These publishers refuse to make the perfect bible, cause if they did they'd go out of business. 🤪 My big issue with Crossway is that they always use that grey ink. If you only use their bibles you most likely will never notice, but I notice. Also I can't stand bottom corner references, my brain can't get used to it. I'm old school man, center column refrences are a must have for me. I only kept one of my Esv's from doing reviews the rest I gave away. I only regret letting one of them go, the beautiful study bible with super thick leather 😍 ....Should've kept that one, oh well I have budget genuine leather one no :biggie" pun intended. I have one crossway premium left. the Heirloom widemargin thinline it's really nice and has super thin very unique India Paper by Jongbloed . They make some of the best bibles on the market . The goatskin is tough on mine ya don't have worry about scratches, its the best of both worlds flexible yet durable. Thanks for the video brother.

all those bibles reviewed... but not one was an NASB or a KJV..... I do not know if you even own any of those translations... I have all the translations... and many of the bibles you mentioned. as well ..I own about 8 different ESV bibles.. but.... I will only use them occasionally.. because I do not feel they are as close literally to the original Greek and Hebrew as the NASB and KJV.... Jason Mayfield...?..yes I used to watch his videos... on how to mark a bible... I believe he is an NASB fan.. so he's almost there... I never saw him speaking well of the KJV... he unsubscribed me and quit sending me texts.. when he disagreed with a couple of my comments regarding bible marking.. I used to have his number so I could upload him photos...
