Fascinating how reverse-engineering the Hong Kong style created a brand new Indie variant of the Hong Kong style.

Really enjoy this video. A friend of my who majors in film photography suggest, "There is no "right way" of shooting an action scene, but movements needs to translate well to the audience." Watching this really takes me back when my buddies and I use to shoot amateur fight scenes in a local parking lot.

Love it. Full respect. In Taoism, first there is no path (Tao also means path), but when enough people walk it, the path emerges. But then path also changes. To be alive there must be change, and for those who don't change, there is only doom. And you sir are strong for it.

Retrospectively, I think some of us on the forums not knowing that undercranking was a thing in Jackie Chan/HK films (at least not me), helped springboard our abilities as we pushed ourselves to match a lightning-fast pace that was never real to begin with. I remember feeling betrayed by all my favorite hong kong stars when I eventually learned many of their films had sped up action, especially after growing up as a kid thinking virtually every HK actor was inhumanly fast compared to movies we saw in the US.

@Eric Jacobus That was great! I am glad and honored I met you in Hawaii a few years back. You are an excellent martial artist, stuntman, and actor. I wish you went to Hollywood and showed them and America your action style. And maybe you could have outshined the 'Bourne style', so it got incorporated into more American movies. I would have loved to see you on the big screen, bro! But we all make our choices from our values. I look forward to the next Episodes. I wish you more success!

This brings back so many memories. I remember the forums and the first shorts from Stunt People and Zero Gravity. Eric kept kicking while so many others left to pursue other opportunities. In 2000-2005 we were trying to do something similar back in the Czech Republic. And I spoke to Eric in forums and through e-mail several times. I can see so many similarities with our humble beginnings. Now I write books about action cinema, and I produce video essays sometimes, but Eric - you have a gift to put it into words and pictures like no one else. Keep it up, I know that not many people are watching or listening, but this is the important stuff. Can't wait to read your book. I hope this series will get a proper ending, even if your podcast is a brilliant trove of content as well. Don't retreat, don't surrender. ;)

Honestly, this has been a long time coming. We've followed the careers of you, Martial Masters, Zero Gravity, Vlad, Rivenx3i, Dragon Pheonix, Martial club, and the list goes on for what feels like eons. You constantly inspired Us( we don't use singular pronouns) to keep learning and to grow through our failures as indie stunt people. Though we've focused on our writing over the years, We've found a newfound goal/rejuvenation to create films and rework our craft as a filmmaker, writer, action choreographer, and actor/stuntperson. It's great to see all of you( the indie Asian cinematic action stunt community) glow up and get the shine you indie HK-makers deserve. It inspired us to create content with Trans and Nonbinary HK action, as that is a market we've yet to see and want/will promote! Shit, didn't mean for this to be so long...sorry. Anyway, we said all of this as an appreciation for your content and look forward to the continuation of this series! Happy Filming, Wu's Legion

This is so inspiring. I must admit i don't have anything to show... yet. But I am a stuntman myself from denmark and this is GOLD to me. I looove the action in all of these things you showed and talked about. And hope to one day make a action film myself WITH the Hong Kong style in it. Well I am also a huge superhero nerd🤓🦸‍♂️😅 so yes. I would love to make something like that too. But then I feel like it would be a mix. Or kinda like Captain America The Winter Soldier or Civil War. Those had crazy action and some nice takes of them doing fights. But if we're talking pure martial art and stunts. Then hell yeah i'm up for that😁 Right now i'm just training and saving up for at least a couple of things, so I can make something good and not halfbaked😅 But seriously i really feel like i've been waiting for a video like this. I also saw your rope a dope video. A friend told me about it and said, "hey this guy made this video that is up your alley. Cause you wanted to make stuff like this and it is funny as well as you like. Totally Jackie Chan mode...". I didn’t even heard him finish. I just heard Jackie and I was like, get me my phone😁🤩and gotta say it was inspiring as well🙌

I think the key ingredient in the 80s hk style was its cleverness and wit. The stunt people were only westerners to capture and build on it...watch any stunt people short from immortal to rope a dope and the action is consistently funny, inventive and clever. A lost art it seems as even the best action these days is like stunt people on valium

Hello. It's a usual way when someone imitates someone before inventing something new. Perhaps it's good to ,borrow' a pattern from someone and then add something myself. The Hong Kong fighting style was creaated and improved for - I guess - more than thirty years and a modern technology made it even better. The characters acted in Hong Kong movies really fitted that style. I rather can't imagine JCVD fighting the Hong Kong style so he for instance added more nicety than acrobatics. But audience often prefer watching realistic fight rather than unreal fabulous moves. The best example is the fighting scene from Mission Impossible ( the graet fight in the toilet room ) - the movie is really good but the viewers chose this scene as the best in the movie. And what about Bolo Yeung ? People love him because Bolo is Bolo .... he must be like that ( just like ACDC in music ). Korean fighting scenes are shorter, usually based on legs movements because they wanted to ,promote' their TaeKwonDo in movies and ... they made it. Like I said, everything has got its roots but there must be find a way of existence of martial arts in the cinama. There won't be another Sumo Hung, Donnie Yen or ... Bruce Lee. Scott Adkins is a good example of a man who found himself a place in action martial arts movies, his , bandit fights ' (in the good sense of this word ) are typical and recognizable for him - h'es got intution. O'k, that's all for now, all the best !

eric i'm sorry but its not called sentai, its called TOKUSATSU. sentai means squadron referring to the super sentai tv franchise. tokusatsu means special effects referring to all pieces of film and tv involving suit actors, miniatures, explosions, and stuntmen. Super Sentai IS tokusatsu, but tokusatsu is not just sentai, for example godzilla is the most recognized tokusatsu in the world today and it's special effects expert would go on to create Ultraman along with work for over a hundred films.

Is it an either or situation? Surely you could do a main stream project and then take a month or so off and do something for yourself. i know the prevailing attitude in the industry is to go from project to project to project and if you take a break then something is wrong. Might make it a little harder to get main stream work but I'm sure you could do it. But what do I know.
