Wholeheartedly agree, it's not just about the food, that's what makes it great. But, at the same time, they don't always agree with each other, it's quite refreshing.
One thing I really like about these vids are that the crew in background will laugh and have a small input now and then, adds to the environment, especially in this episode in pubs you need that social aspect and that added to it.

Fun fact about pub names in Britain - they're named things like 'The Kings Head' & 'The Black Swan' because outside there would be a painted image above the entrance on the outside. This was done to help identify public houses (pubs) before most people were literate and could read / write. Most frequenters were agriculture / factory workers and would use the image above the entrance to identify the pub.
@JimWhitaker
9 күн бұрын
Alternatively, alehouses would traditionally be identified by a bough from an evergreen tree fixed above the entrance. I last saw this in Austria a couple of decades ago.
Do a PART TWO of this. Seriously, one of the best episodes so far.

Spent 2 years of my life studying in the UK, I visited Spoons at least once a week with my mates on Thursday for the quiz night. Totally enjoy it!

Omg these two in any environment makes me smile. Also the more drunk Joe got the more hilarious he became! I love this series so much! Especially when Joe goes to Harry's country. Hands down the best thing in Insider Food!
Spoons doesn't play music because Sir Tim Martin modelled his chain on George Orwell's essay "The Moon Under Water" where Orwell lists all the attributes for his perfect pub, one being "In the Moon Under Water it is always quiet enough to talk. The house possesses neither a radio nor a piano".

You have no idea how much i look forward to these episodes! Thanks Joe and Harry! ❤

35:30 - As someone who worked in a pub in London, most of the strange requests we'd do, after clarifying about three times that is what they wanted. We'd then try whatever weird thing it was after our shifts, just to see if it actually worked or if it was just mental. The main one that stands out to me is having lager topped with pepsi, which honestly was nowhere near as bad as I expected - pretty much the same as a lemonade top haha, even if I looked at the guy who ordered it like he'd escaped from the local asylum!

27:36 Harry calling Highbury & Islington a lovely area just reminds of the time that I saw two middle aged men, presumably pissed out of their minds, fighting on the floor over a bottle of Sarsons vinegar that they'd stolen from the local spoons. To cap it all off a busker outside the station decided to freestyle narrate the two men wrestling on the ground. It was bewildering and I would've stayed to watch for longer but I had a 6 a side football match to get to

My favourite pub: The Mayflower. I've made an oldest pubtour in London (for me and my friends), and loved this small, old pub.
As an Englishmen who loves America and American culture, this series is unbelievably awesome. More please! And better pubs next time! Gordon’s wine bar!? - that needs to be one it would blow an American mind! 😊
22:45 fun fact about half pints, my dad worked in a lot of pubs and you can tell a landlord is an alcoholic as usually they will be drinking half pints to make it seem they aren't drinking as much

Until relatively recently in Scotland, there was a whole section of society (mainly working class men, though by the time I was working behind a bar in the mid 90’s they were mostly retired) who would buy a single half pint of beer to last their entire visit and would order however many whiskys to sip and once the got down to the last of their whisky, they’d pour the last few drips into their beer. This was my Granda’s way of drinking in a pub and I can only say that in the thirty odd years we shared this planet, I can only really remember him being properly drunk once…though my brothers will have seen it far more often due to Burns Suppers mainly.
All of the things British i never expected Joe to bring up Garth Merenghis Darkplace

I never thought that was unique about looking for a house and thinking is there a good pub near by. I literally decided on buying my house rather than another on the fact the one I bought was in a village with a lovely pub at the end of the road 😂😂

I never commented, but I always love the food tours and see the dynamics of Harry and Joe, and them doing a pub crawl just shows the dynamic at it's best as just them just chatting in a bar as if it's they're not doing this for a show and it's amazig
Harry had a glint in his eye talking about Oily Jonnie's. "Jonnies" has another meaning in the UK.
YAAAAS!!! I was coincidentally on a binge watch of the previous food tours, and then this pops up on my feed…! Imma definitely watch this after work! 🤩🤩
His face was hilarious watching him open the bag of crackling. it's like he witnessed him kick a child.
The Surprise in Chelsea after much research, is my favourite pub in London. Food’s great. Atmosphere is low key. Beer is well kept. Service is friendly. No big chain vibe. About the right size. Good Sunday lunch. I know you are thinking - Chelsea? Really? It’s not Chelsea at all.
Do Part 2 - Best Soho Pubs. The French House, The Shaston, The Old Coffee House, The Coach & Horses, The Three Greyhounds, The Lyric, The Devonshire.
London has some amazing old pubs. In fact the whole UK does, but sadly many of them have closed.
I love you taking your American friend to food places. I'm from Scotland, nopesorry
Finally, something I do look forward to doing in the UK

The best thing about a British pub is that you'll find a few 18 year old poor boys drinking with an 80 year old aristocratic man and a 50 year old mother of 20. All met the same night, yet all are happily deep in conversation. It's supposed to be a public house, a home away from home. Class doesn't matter as in the pub, everyone is equal and every person can give their own point of view. You don't see that in other countries. It's very special. It's such a shame that we are losing pubs at an extraordinary rate, and that people also drink in soulless bars.
I didn't know you were from Ramsgate. My mum was from Margate. Love all around there.
Old Bank of England pub has cool features inside and a double decker bus in the beer garden.
Cheers 🍻
would love to see more of this, part 2 would be great
IMHO The Porterhouse up near Covent Garden is the best pub in London that I know of (qualifer I haven't drunk at all of them). Lots of really good craft ales, including some they brew themselves in their brewery in Dublin, an insane number of bottled and canned beers from all over the world. Plus it has these copper ducts all over everywhere so it looks like some steampunk heaven. And (importantly) it's not a chain pub! If you guys make a part 2 of this, I recommend heading there.
gotta go to some end pubs in a part 2!
I'm 13 minutes in and just found out that Harry and I are from the same town! There is a second Spoons in Maidstone, The Society Rooms, which was opened in 2002, so when my friends and I were 18 the next year and going out drinking, we usually started there as it was much nicer than Muggs! But further to walk then across the river to the clubs!
I’m sure it has already been mentioned that Charles Dickens had 10 children! Love this channel and love the banter between Harry and Joe. I worked in Ely Place, Holborn, which has one of the oldest pubs in London, Ye Olde Mitre (down an alley in Hatton Garden), you can’t fit more than ten people in the bar down stairs, but does have another level, oh the memories 😂
You guys have only been together for a year? Brilliant! You should have your own channel.
1/2 pint in warm weather makes sense. You finish the beer quickly and it stays cold.
Bucket of Blood was a nickname for the Lamb & Flag in Covent Garden bc of the bare knuckle boxing in the early 19th century. I wonder if there is a current modern Bucket of Blood?
