Finding Seashells at Mooloolaba Beach | What's in the Rock Pools? [Virtual Shelling]

Ойын-сауық

Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba are beautiful neighboring suburbs in coastal Maroochydore, and they have a long rocky beach that stretches between them. I had a great time walking along the shore to find these treasures today. There was a lot of times when I found nothing, but the few shells I did find were absolutely lovely!!
Let me know which ones were your favourites ;D and if you enjoyed this and want to see more shell finding videos, I'd appreciate a like or a comment. I read all of them and try to reply when I can. You have no idea how much of a smile you guys put on my face. Thanks everyone!

I didn't even realise that Point Cartwright and the surrounding beaches had such lovely seashells until I saw "Shellcade Shelling Down Under" - I admire him a lot; he's a wonderful local shell! You can check out his amazing shelling videos here:

    G’day Alison 👋🏻🐚 Yessss thank you so much for coming along and enjoying some fun at the beach! I think my favourite shell changed after making this video… I really like that red and yellow Sertum Rock Shell now, and the little Kieneri’s Cowrie - it came up really nicely with some light sanding and mineral oil! But ahhh truely, I think I have three favourites today 🤣 Thank you so much for watching 🥰

The clam’s other common name is “Manila Clam” I believe, but that was harder to me to remember for some reason 🤣 The limpets have such a huge variety… the silver ring might have been because it was worn away a little 🤔? Awww, I’m sorry to hear that you’re getting so much snow, I hope it starts to ease up soon! Until then, thank you for enjoying my sunny adventures 🥰

    Good morning Mattie, My favorite thing is your beautiful sunny weather. In Savannah the weather is cold, wet, and gray. Would love to be with you on that beautiful beach. My favorite were the cones. I really love all the variations of colors that you have at the beaches. There are cone shells here in the states but you have to go south. My goal this summer is to finding one at a gulf beach in Florida. Fabulous video and loved the shells you found. Hope you have a great week. Until the next video.🥰🥰🥰

    Good morning Adrian 👋🏻 Oooh wow, I had no idea! I knew from my seashell book at there was another cowrie that looked nearly identical to the Kieneri's Cowrie, but I didn't think I'd find that one... mostly because I was told that this specific beach is good for Kieneri's. Awesome, I'm so glad I found it, I was telling someone how nice it looks now after getting a bit of mineral oil; it's probably my favourite from the trip. Thanks again, Adrian 😁

    So, the calcified cowrie shells, do they continue to look cloudy when you oil them? What if you dip them and remove the calcium and then give them a light spray of clear lacquer? Would that work to bring out their beautiful colors and shine again?

  • @SandCoffeeRocks

    @SandCoffeeRocks

    11 ай бұрын

    G'day Janice 👋🏻💖 Ohhh, those are so good questions, and might depend on other people's experiences, but I'll share my own. The calcified cowries look much nicer with a bit of oil on them, yes, as long as the calcification is minimal and isn't too bad to cause a rough feeling finish on the shell. As for dipping them in acid, I would advise against it... It could very well work with larger and thicker shelled cowries, but in my experience, the typical cowrie I find is way too small with such a thin shell to make it work as you'll like. Also, their wonderful patterns and markings are usually just on the top layer of the shell, and will quickly be stripped away with just a moment in the acid. It will also leave a very pitted texture on the cowrie shells that is very noticeable because of how smooth they usually are, as opposed to other types of shells were such a thing can be more easily overlooked. Yes, a spray or lacquer can help with that, but I don't know how nice the result would be? Usually, I just keep looking for a nice cowrie that I don't need to do all of these things to...or one that's pretty nice and only needs the faintest touch of oil to get back to being it's best. I know, it makes me sound like a snob, doesn't it 🤣 but I'm able to go to the beach so often, and search for so many cowries, so I'm able to pick and choose the ones I want in the end 🐚✨😍. For others who can't get as much beach time, they can certainly try the methods that you mentioned, and it would probably elevate the shell with enough care 🤔 Thank you so much for watching, and for your thoughtful question!
