Hi Dan thanks for the video i use streaming when were are in the caravan and also at home I always had in the back of my mind about satellite setups when we purchased our first caravan in 2016 but as you know the streaming apps provide a better selection of programs your update has made me satisfied on the system we currently use we have our caravan on a seasonal pitch and a few times a year we tour around the UK we have an EE mini router for data and we check the area we head too for best EE signals up to now we had no issues did at the start of touring at the sites using the wifi packages they sell but its a learning curve at the start of touring thanks to you and Andrew Ditton and others it makes things a little easier sharing ups and downs to achieve stress free breaks Dave

Hi Dan, having never purchased a new caravan before our Buccaneer I hadn't realised how long the exchange and transfer took. Ours also had the added pleasure of being in the rain. Deep joy it was and stopped as soon as we had completed the transfer! Yep, I had really upset someone upstairs!

Hi Dan, another great video and always look forward to new ones. I purchased the Satgear premium kit a couple of years back and it worked well, the downside was that the LED coloured signal light on the LNB was a bit hit and miss and yes it worked but was a bit fiddly as it needed the receiver in a certain mode to feed the LNB signal light and you had to be almost spot on before the LED would turn to green. I have now upgraded to the Maxview Precision which has a built in finder and only locks on to the Astra satelite which prevents the dish locking on to other satelites close by. The Maxview precision system is by far the easiest I have used and set up by far, built well and has finder and spirit level built into the tripod. It also comes in a Sky Q variant and I take my Q box with me and it works perfect even setting the Q box up to the HooToo. Would seriously recommend the Maxview Precision.

Thanks dan , I’ve been using sky in my van for about 15yrs . Good shout for VR. Satfinder, should be a good help. The inline sat finder I use as a tone & a meter when a satellite is found , it’s easier to hear rather than look for lights when moving the dish around. Another tip is to have the inline satellite finder turned to the highest sensitivity then turn it down once the correct satellite is found for more pin point accuracy .

Thanks for this one Dan, like you I bought a dish and stand with a free sat box like yours many years ago and never used it I'm tempted to give it a go as we sometimes have trouble getting free view. But then again its something else to find room for in the back of the truck and more work for me setting up, just so the Mrs can watch celebrity big get me out of the x factor Britain's got something or other rubbish, maybe I'll just leave it in the garage. Best wishes Jon

Good video. I’ve uses a similar domestic dish and cheap decoder for 10 years and got a good signal as far south as the Dordogne. One tip. If you use a domestic Sky dish the LND is offset so if the dish is mounted vertically the vertical angle is perfect for the Astra satellite. You just have to move the dish horizontally to find a signal and maybe tweak it vertically for maximum strength.

Hi Dan, thanks for doing this video as I have been toying with the idea of satelite as on some sites we have been on the tv signal has been very poor. However, there was clear view to the skies so satelite would work. We also have an Avtex satelte tv which came with our Barracuda so we are most of the way there. The wiring from outside to inside and through the booster was also supplied. Now I just have to decide whether to buy a dish or not. Thanks for your thoughts.

Using a Sky dish with the spirit level means that once the dish is level, all you need to do is swivel the dish left and right. I use Humax freesat recoder with dual LNB and a SatLink WS-6906 meter which allows me to check the signal without going in and out of the van. The Humax also has catchup and remote recording on it which I connect to my phone via tethering. The whole setup means that TV is available if/when I want it.

I know this comment is rather late but think its worth adding. I have been impressed with the Max View set up where you link up a speaker to a tv outlet so you know exactly when the broadcast is successfully being received. However, it is too expensive for us. So as we have a bluetooth speaker we have plugged in a bluetooth transmitter into the TV headphone outlet. Then you can have the TV sound right next to you when adjusting the dish.

Hi Dan, I tried setting up Freesat tv last weekend and, like Jason's comment, I looked at the TV Satellite signal/quality screen to align the dish correctly. I've never really got on with signal meters as they make such an annoying screech (I know you can turn that off) and they are also temperamental. I looked at a dish setup like yours using a tripod and an old sky dish, then thought of making one up with a clamp for the side of the caravan. I then saw the MaxView MXL026 Remora 40 suction mounted dish at a show which was exactly what I was going to build but looks a lot neater and aesthetically pleasing. You can get it for around £99 if you search around. Not cheap but looks great and works very well. For those in a poor signal location (mobile & tv) it's a good solution.

Have had a tripod setup in the past and as mentioned, used the signal strength and quality indicators on the TV screen., although have a meter that does terrestial as well, though do not bother with that either. Always previewed sites beforehand for direction to get an idea about best pitch selection on arrival using the app. Humax Freesat boxes, are great also, but since digital got better after the analogue switch off, so do not use satellite at all, mainly because of the bulk of the dish and tripod setup. However, have now also got the Remora suction dish with twin lnb as we are going further afield. Have wired the van up so can use the Humax box as well as the Freesat tuner on a 28” LG smart tv , also just bought. a 12volt to 19volt adaptor. Very quickly set up during a test at home, a real doddle. That dish I can highly recommend as it is compact and light and will travel behind drivers seat. Mel

I use the suction one, I have 2, both from car boot sales for a fiver each! They are good, but you can sometimes have problems getting line of sight depending on your pitch location & if you have an awning which rules out one side of the van. A little known fact is you can leave it clipped in the case & just have it on the floor. The case lid has a wing nut clamp to lock it off when you have the right elevation. I will probably put the spare on ebay this weekend ;)

I have been using a satellite dish on tripod for the last 4 years you can site it a lot easier than a roof mounted unit . I use a 80cm dish because the further you go north the larger dish you need . I use a cheap more professional satellite finder i use a SATlink WS-6906 it shows signal strength, Signal quality and bit error rate, It also has a satellite TV tuner built into it. It cost me £50 in 2015. I love my Formula 1 and can't miss it for the world this is why have satellite TV.

How did I miss this video? Like you, we've no need for satellite TV. We're happy enough with terrestrial TV and the Freeview channels. On our last outing to Thornwick Bay the service posts on our pitch had an aerial connection so we just ran the coax lead to the caravan tuned the telly and we were away. The apps take all the guesswork out of lining the dish up. Saves having to do a Nazi salute to get it approximately right.

Was given an Aldi/Lidl ‘dish in a suitcase’ by my brother in law, because it was very complicated and thought I may have better luck. He was wrong. We have a TV in the ‘van that has built in DVD so we watch the occasional movie and are not really interested in TV when on holiday. We passed on the system to a charity shop and hope it done someone a turn. Good vid, though.

Well done on explaining something you don't use! Lol. I use a RoadPro Sat Dome. It works really well IF I have a clear unobstructed line of sight to the satellite. I think dish systems give you a better, stronger signal. That Satfinder App looks very clever, I'll give it a go.

Hi Paul, well you've kind of answered that in your question. You would choose a Satellite when no DVB-T exists. either from being quite remote, or in a European country. Certainly on a few rural sites we have visited, local TV reception has been very poor, but as you would have seen we use the external TV point to hook up onto site TV signal (when available) Hope that helps

  • @jasonandreoli4135

I have never used a satellite finder or a compass. The strength and quality signal bars on satelite reciever viewed through the tv is sufficient. Just sweep the dish from west to south adjusting elevation slightly each sweep. Less than 2 minutes to set up every time. The only issue being when the sun is reflecting off the caravan window and you cannot see the screen but opening the window sorts that out.
