FINDING SAPPHIRES AT GEM MOUNTAIN!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

You don't have to be a die-hard "rock hound" to have fun and find real sapphires at Gem Mountain in Montana. Located at mile marker 38.4 of Montana Highway 38. It took about an hour and a half to get there using the Skalkaho Highway; a narrow, winding, single lane, bumpy dirt road. We spent a little over 2 hours there, and then took the paved road to Philipsburg, another 22 miles east of the mine when we left.
(I will review Philipsburg in a later video) The sapphire discovery experience is great for most kids as well as adults. Make sure to have reservations in advance. They operate much like a restaurant; if you have a reservation you get in. If you don't, they will take you if they have room. There is no way to know unless you go on line and make those reservations. It really is too far to "just drive out and see", so be prepared. Speaking of that, take plenty of water, sunscreen, bug repellent, and a hat. They also recommend bringing your "cheaters" if you need helping reading. It really does help you spot the sapphires in the midst of the gravel!
When we went in July, 2021, a bucket of gravel was $35.00 each. It's really is best to have your own bucket, I wouldn't want to do any more. However, you can take a bag of gravel home if you have the ability to wash and search at home.
Would I recommend this to grandparents looking for a fun activity for grand kids? Yes, if they are old enough to stay with an activity for an hour or so. There were tons of kids there, and even a few dogs, (they weren't searching for sapphires though)!
The staff was extremely helpful, cheerful and plentiful. Gem Mountain is a must-do if you are in South-West Montana!

I was here about 23 years ago with my 8 year old daughter. We actually did the digging ourselves back then, with what we dug we ended up with well over 100 sapphires, but when they checked only 13 were of gem quality. I had a few of them faceted. I still have several pounds (5 gal bucket) of the gravel to sort through. Guess I will have to make myself a little set up and have the grand kids come to find their own sapphires. Been so long, this place has really changed from when we were there, and now I think I might go back this summer.

Appreciate the video! Really enjoy how knowledgable the sorters are, and how they talk you through the whole process.

You mean that the sapphires are sorted to the BOTTOM of your tray, which will be on the TOP of the pile once turned over correctly.
