Finding Phrygian
Музыка
Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Scales & Tales with Finding Phrygian. Last week I posted the "Discovering Dorian" episode of this series and received a ton of great feedback, comments/messages, and requests to continue onward and focus on the remaining modal scales from the major scale. Needless to say, that's exactly what this episode/lesson contains, so let's dive in and explore this exotic and common tonality/scale known as Phrygian.
This lesson is similar in form to the previous episode that focused on Dorian, but this time we're hitting everything related to ultra-exotic Phrygian mode. This includes some authentic-sounding Flamenco guitar ideas, a good sample of what this scale sounds like, and a few locations to perform it on the guitar. We're also hitting various chords that imply this scales exotic and ear-catching sound, along with a look at some famous music that features this flavor - including brief examples by David Bowie, film composer John Williams, Alice In Chains, and the mighty Pink Floyd, to name a few.
If you're one of the countless viewers that requested to continue this series of mode-focused lessons, curious about understanding how to use this interesting/common flavor found in music, or maybe just a player wanting to shake things up in their playing - this episode is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

We also need Luring out Lydian and Mining for Mixolydian
More fun with Phrygian: superimposing pentatonic scales. The notes of pentatonic minor (1 b3 4 5 b7) are found in the Dorian, Phrygian, and Aeolian modes, so you can substitute the pentatonics freely for any of those modes with a common major parent scale. To continue with E Phrygian: its parent major is C Ionian, which also gives us D Dorian and A Aeolian, so you can play D pentatonic minor and A pentatonic minor over E Phrygian riffs or progressions, as long as you resolve them to strong E Phrygian tonalities (leaning on that E-F relationship is a good idea). Try playing a minor pentatonic sequence in E, then dropping down a whole step and playing the same sequence again in D, and then resolving to E.
Finally after 40+ years someone explained to me how to find modal chords simply, the best lesson ever man. Thank you.
God damn that was a badass intro

For real!!!!!
Daaaang Brewster's tearing it up. I thought I was in Spain at a bullfight.
Had to pause after the “joy to the neitherworld” line because I nearly spat out my supper it was so funny.
"it's not going to sound like "Joy To The World"..... .... it's going to sound like "Joy to The Netherworld"!" :D
Haunting, mysterious, and exotic are are all evoked through Phrygian.
Dude that lesson goes to the top of my list in this series👊👍😎
I absolutely loved this lesson Dave🤘. Incredible tones to play with and learn. Thx again Dave. Keep up the great work. Some of those times won't let me sleep tonight 😂🎸🤘👍
Excellent video first thing in morning thanks David ❤from 🏴
MY FAVORITE MODE OF MODES!!!🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌 I was very lucky to visit my mothers side of her family in England 🏴 when I was 9 years old - long story short - my visit to England 🏴 was amazing that I have forever in my life today - The Gipsy Kings!!!! Phrygian Mode!!!!!!! Thank you David Brewster!!!🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
I was at that show. Steve Morse opened up for them, and then for a finale all four of them played together. One of the most amazing shows I've ever seen.
Thanks Dave for another great modal lesson!
That little pinky trill at the start of the free jam with the looper at the end was silky smooth and tasty AF my guy !
Great stuff Dave…Thanks.🎸⚡️🎶
'It's not going to sound like Joy To The World, it's going to sound like' Joy To The Netherworld'... 🤣🤣🤣 I'm still laughing at that one. Brilliant lesson as always.
It's all making sense now. I played the C maj pentatonic scale over an Em chord and bam! Phrygian.
i love when you open with an original piece 🎉
Your Phrygian Is Running!
Great lesson. You are awesome at explaining and showing uses for some of these more advanced topics. Thank You!
just taught me phrygian in a trial by fire thank ya
That was terrific. Thank you very much for this lesson!
Perfect album on the top left for this lesson!
My favorite mode thanks for a really cool lesson David 👍👏🤘
Fantastic!!! Keep this type of video coming !! Loving it !! I especially love when you show how these modes tie together with other modes and how we can use them simultaneously!! Awesome job !!!
Joy to the netherworld. Brilliant.
Yep gunna have to watch a couple times lol great vid !!!
Yeah, 12:18, I always thought that Alice IC song had killer riffs 😊
Enjoy the HEAT...Hot lessons included, Brewski!
Joy to the netherworld needs to be written 🤟
Cool. Playing a mode and hearing where it would be suitable are two different challenges, and this helps. BTW - instead of "Fake flamenco", you could call it "Shamenco"!
Loved your intro and your explanations very inspirational and educational ! I appreciate you brew!
You just showed me that I have been playing phrygian mode for years without even knowing it 🤔
My dad lost his mind when he caught me using a pick playing his classical guitar.
Awesome, thank you.
Started learning theory on a piano a year or so ago. This is so much easier to understand since the first video of yours I had seen. Great videos !
Makes me think of RAINBOW "The Gates of Babylon".
I really enjoy this series. Thanks so much😊
That opening was definitely Eddie influenced to my ears
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS VIDEO ❤️ 📹 😍. PHENOMENAL VIDEO.
Alex Lifeson and La Villa Strangiato
Very cool. Thanks!
Thanks so much and well done as always cheerz and peace 🤙
great lesson
Mike Oldfield also plays this mode a lot in a song called "Serpent Dream". Which is over an Am tonality I think?
Great video as always! Is that a Hawkwind-poster on the Wall?
I gotta say. You cover a lot of ground. Very good. Thanks.
I have a couple of songs on this scale. Very metal I think. Why does the home note can be E or F from phrygian E?
Alex Lifeson's opening riff for La Villa Strangiato
Modes have always intimidated me because I find them so confusing! Basically I know that each mode is a variation of the Major (Ionian) mode right? My issue is the fingering of each mode. Can you do a video for slowpokes like me that shows the fingering of each mode? Also is it the “C” Major scale which is the Ionian? D= Dorian, E=Phrygian F=Lydian, G= Mixolydian, A= Aolian, B=Locrian? Thanks for allowing me to ask a long winded question!
Just add the major 3rd to the phrygian scale and you have phrygian dominent.
Dave....can you do a lesson on Michael Hedges
I think that teaching the modes as what degrees are flattened from the major scale is more advantageous. Is it not?
SO ? I AM WAITING for you to show me the A minor Phrygian scale ? Where is it found ? 5 th fret ? low e string ---what are the notes ?
If it's all ionian sections , then why not think of it as playing "x" major scale above the 3rd chord to get phrygian tension ? Is there another purpose for modal thinking ? 🤔
Just finished the lesson. Rock out ☠️💀☠️☠️ very helpful. I'm also excited for the rest of this series on modes. These past 2 have helped tremendously. Great song choice, definitely one of my favorite syd era songs.
wait what E5??? what does that even mean? really asking. appreciate knowledgeable responses. ty.
